The VLDL of both human and rat sera can be dissociated by heparin into an a- and a β-Iipoprotein-containing component of reproducible composition. The heparin precipitable β-containing component of human and rat VLDL contains more than 90% of the triglycerides and cholesterol of that fraction, consistent with the role of the β-lipoproteins as the main triglyceride and cholesterol carriers in the circulation. The heparin soluble a-containing component contains a higher phospholipid to protein ratio than that of any of the other serum lipoprotein fractions, suggesting that it may contain a peptide with high affinity for phospholipids such as the "C" …  Lire la suite

Two series of recollection micropuncture experiments were performed on the dog kidney to assess renal handling of magnesium. Proximal tubule fluid was obtained before and after isotonic saline infusion and magnesium chloride. Tubule fluid-to-plasma (TF/P) inulin ratio was depressed after infusions of saline and magnesium chloride, whilst the tubule fluid-to-plasma ultrafiltrate TF/UF magnesium ratio approximated to unity. Fractional excretion of sodium and magnesium showed a parallel increase after saline, but after magnesium chloride infusion fractional excretion of magnesium far exceeded that of sodium. The maximum safe period of normothermic ischemia the canine liver could tolerate was forty minutes. Survival of the animals after ischemic liver injury could be predicted by measuring the levels of lactate, inorganic phosphate and adenine nucleotides in the hepatic tissue. Measurements of high energy phosphate compounds and study of mitochondrial respiratory function in the revascularized liver helped to predict the consequent survival or death of the animal. The maximum safe period of temporary hepatic inflow stasis was prolonged by maintaining a minimum blood flow to the liver along collateral vessels in the gastrohepatic omentum. The mechanical properties of cloth, glass fiber polyester composite at different temperatures are determined. The viscoe1astic properties of this material are characterized by using relaxation tests. The theoretical relationships are used in appropriate computer programs. This includes correction of the relaxation curves for the finite rise time of strain. The experimental effort covers studies on specimens tested at different temperatures (-40 to 400~) and strain levels (0.1 to 1.2 percent). The linear viscoelastic behavior is verified for each testing temperature. Enterochromaffin cells were investigated in the jejunum of adult mice using electron microscope radioautography at various times during continuous infusion of 3H-thymidine. Enterochromaffin cells were classified into three types: biconcave granule cells or type I (60%), large spherical granule cells or type II (13%), and small spherical granule cells or type III (24%). Uncommon spherical granule cells accounted for about 3%. Typical enterochromaffin cells do not divide, but undergo renewal by differentiation of unrecognized precursors in the lower half of intestinal crypts. In the fundamental understanding of the floatation process, the energies of the various interfaces involved are of prime importance. The work of adhesion equation offers a relationship between these surface energies and floatability. The equation is readily derived and is frequently quoted in relation to floatation (1-5) . However, it has met with little use and even less success (6, 7) which is possibly die to the techniques employed in measuring the essential parameters. "A study of the effect of digging depth on the speed of wheel-type sub drainage trending machines revealed an inverse linear relationship for the range of depths observed in several different soils. Both soil texture and machine characteristics affected the depth-speed relationship to a degree which prevented the use of a generalized formula for all machines in all soil types. Data are presented for 20 delay factors which occurred during normal trenching operations. An analysis of these delays showed that an average of 58.6 percent of the available digging time was lost. This thesis is an examination of the extant psychological treatises of Abu Yusuf Yaqub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi, the ninth century A.D. Arab scholar who was among the first of his race to interest himself in strictly philosophical questions. Al-Kindi's writings were among the first fruits of the translation of Greek philosophical and scientific works into Arabic. It is under that aspect that this thesis approaches his views on soul and intellect - as an instance of the passage of Greek philosophical ideas to the Muslim Arabs. "My purpose in this thesis is to compare the AngloCanadian and American legal systems as regards the legislation dealing with corporate take-overs, the compulsory acquisition of the shares of a dissenting minority shareholder in the course of a take-over, and defenses to a take-over. The emphasis is on how a comparative approach to the questions considered will lead to superior solutions. Although various articles on the subject in one of the two legal systems may briefly refer to the law in the other system, no in depth comparison of the two systems exists. Thrombosis initiated by intravascular prosthetic devices remains a major complication of cardiovascular surgery. Blood coagulation mechanisms are reviewed with respect particularly to initiation and propagation of thrombus formation on prosthetic surfaces. The platelet' s role in thrombogenesis is emphasized. Standardization of in vivo thrombogenic models must be achieved before testing new local methods of thrombus inhibition. In this project a polished quarts ring implanted in the mongrel dog’s interior vena cava or abdominal aorta served as a thrombogenic model. Evaluation of the dog's thrombosis response to this intravascular ring revealed a highly variable response.  Lire la suite

This thesis examines the aspect of the metropolis/satellite relationship of the United States and Canada that exists between their respective stock exchanges. The analysis is not limited to an examination of the stock market out is more directed to the economic, psychological, and social factors that are revealed about these two countries’ relationship by the operations of their stock exchanges. This research was carried out to determine how capital gets drained out of Canada and is thus not available for investment in Canadian enterprises.
