1971 — Perception of Doctors and Social Workers of the Social Work RoleRésumé
This study has attempted to explore whether a discrepancy exists between the perceptions of doctors and social workers as to the role of the medical social worker. In order to establish these perceptions, referrals from dOctors were sought as a means through which their recognition of the professional activities of social workers in the hospital could be identified. On the other hand, the perceptions of social workers of their mm role were studied through the means of a questionnaire. A comparison was then made of the responses of doctors and social workers t.o achieve the goal of the study. Lire la suite

1971 — Purification of hog kidney dopa decarboxylase.Résumé
This thesis outlines a method for purifying dopa decarboxylase from 300 g of hog kidney by heat treatment, ammonium sulfate fractionation and chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex, hydroxylapatite and Sephadex G15O. This method yields a product of high purity as shown by gel electrophoresis in three different systems as well as different gel concentrations. The purified material has a specific activity of 21.1 micromoles of SHT produced per mg protein per h. The purified enzyme has 7 times the activity towards L-DOPA as it does towards 5HTP. This ratio does not change during purification. 5HTP and DOPA act as mutual competitive inhibitors … Lire la suite

1971 — Poverty in Canada : the existing income security system and the guaranteed minimum income.Résumé
Despite sizeable government outlays on Income Security measures, the incidence of poverty remains high in Canada. The aim of this thesis is to show to what extent one particular redistributive scheme, called the guaranteed minimum income, would be an improvement over the present methods of dealing with poverty: The common variables underlying the various versions of the guaranteed minimum income plan are explained, and cost estimates of several possible plans are developed. The last part of this thesis deals with sorne of the administrative problems involved in implementing a guaranteed minimum income plan. Lire la suite

1971 — Structural aspects of human gastric gel mucinRésumé
The structure of human gastric gel mucin, a fucomucin of very high molecular weight, was studied by analyzing the effects of alkali treatment. The gel mucin was seen to undergo a β-elimination reaction as judged by the loss of both threonine and serine residues, the production of α-amino butyric acid and alanine residues in a reducing system, the formation of α-ketobutyric acid and pyruvic acid residues in a non-reducing system and the substantial decrease in molecular weight of the mucin after alkali treatment. It is concluded that gel mucin has polysaccharide side-chains of exceptionally large size, joined O-glycosidically to the … Lire la suite

1971 — Interorganizational RelationshipsRésumé
The present study concerns itself with the development of a theoretical framework for examining and understanding inter-organizational relationships. An attempt has been made to integrate in as comprehensive a fashion as possible a variety of theoretic&! material focusing on this aspect of organizational behavior. The central conceptualization around which all other material has been organized is that of exchange. The exchange model conceives of inter-organizational interaction in terms of transfers of resources from one organization to another. This theoretical model suggests that there exist certain organizational factors which influence the manner in which organizations interact with one another. Lire la suite

1971 — Lymphocyte transformation in vitro in response to the carcinoembryonic antigen of the human digestive systemRésumé
The carcinoembryonic antigen of the human digestive system (CEA) is a tumour-specific constituent of all human gastrointestinal tumours arising from tissues of entodermal origin and c+ the digestive organs of the fetus from two to six months of gestation. Circulating antibodies ta the CEA have been found in most patients with non-metastatic gastrointestinal cancers and in most pregnant women. In the cancer patients, antibody titres bore no relationship to the clinical course. Cell-mediated immunity to CEA was studied by measuring in vitro transformation of lymphocytes obtained from normal individuals, patients with gastrointestlnal cancers, and pregnant women. No transformation was found … Lire la suite

1971 — Nucleotide metabolism in erythrocytes.Résumé
The role of adenine and adenosine in elevating cellular ATP concentration is investigated. Incubation of erythrocytes with inosine, glucose and adenine; or adenosine in low concentrations, doubles the fresh cell concentration of ATP. The mechanism by which adenine elevates adenine nucleotide concentration is known, however the mechanism by which adenosine acts has not been elucidated. The findings of this study suggest that adenosine is directly incorporated by an erythrocyte adenosine kinase. Evidence for the existence of this enzyme in human erythrocytes along with some of its enzymatic properties are presented. Under optimal conditions the maximum concentration of ATP synthesized was … Lire la suite

1971 — Control of protein biosynthesis in eukaryocytes: the induction and inactivation of hepatic tyrosine transaminase.Résumé
The analogs 8-azaguanine and 5-azacytidine do not inhibit the initial steroid-mediated induction of tyrosine transaminase; however, the continued induced synthesis of the enzyme, elicited by repeated doses of hydrocortisone, is inhibited in the presence of the analogs after approximately 6 hours. It is inferred from these and other data that the induction cycle involves the activation by hydrocortisone, and subsequent turnover, of a pool of preexisting inactive messenger RNA for tyrosine transaminase. This study provides the first functional test for the existence of such pools. 8-Azaguanine, 5-azacytidine and cycloheximide can maintain the tyrosine transaminase activity at or near the induced … Lire la suite

1971 — Romance and naturalism in Norman Mailer’s development as novelistRésumé
This thesis examines the intense conflict in Norman Mailer's development between a naturalistic and a romantic impulse. Hailer develops from his naturalistic first novel to the romance form of his later novels in an effort to solve the problem of the paradoxical nature of power. This central problem is posed in terms of an oedipal struggle between a young man and his father-symbol. Mailer 's turn toward the romance genre can be seen in his later heroes who resemble the Adamic heroes of the nineteenth century American romance; and, in the shift from an objective to a subjective view of … Lire la suite

1971 — Studies on intestinal amino acid transport in the rat: effects of tetracycline and calcium – vitamin D deprivationRésumé
Tetracycline has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in rat intestinal rings in vitro four hours after intraperitoneal administration. An inhibitory effect on the uptake of L-Iysine. L-alanine and cycloleucine was evidenced only at twelve hours after drug administration. Kinetic studies over time and concentration indicated reduced influx and Vmax. The findings suggest that a transport protein(s) which turns over rapidly becomes reduced in amount and rate limiting. Lire la suite

1971 — Metabolism of neutral steroids in the human placenta and fetus.Résumé
The metabolism of progesterone in the midterm human fetus was studied following the injection of the labelled hormone into the umbilical circulation with the fetus 'in utero'. The tissues from two male fetuses were analyzed and the following conjugated metabolites were isolated: deoxycorticosterone sulfate, ll-dehydrocorticosterone sulfate, corticosterone sulfate, cortisol sulfate, pregnanolone sulfate, 3beta-hydrox,v-5alpha-pregnan-20-one sulfate, pregnanediol-3alpha-yl sulfate and pregnanediol glucosiduronate. In another study, l7alpha-hydroxyprogesterone-4-14c was injected into the umbilical vein. Androstenedione and testosterone were isolated from the testes and adrenals of two male fetuses. In addition, the following metabolites were found in the placenta, cord and the fetal tissues: l7alpha, 20beta-dihydroxypregn-4-en-3-one, … Lire la suite

1971 — A fluorescent compound obtained from two of the lens proteins of the dogfish eyeRésumé
γ-crystallin and albuminoid from the lens of the dogfish eye produce, on hydrolysis in 6N HCI, a substance which fluoresces at 445nm. This substance was separated from the rest of the acid hydrolysate by salt gradient elution on cellulose phosphate and desalting on Bio-Gel followed by salt gradient elution of DEAE-cellulose. The fluorescent substance is characterized by a complicated UV absorption spectrum with peaks at 273 and 360nm and a shoulder at 305nm, and an activation spectrum which corresponds to the absorption spectrum except for the relative peak heights which differ slightly. It is soluble in water, ethyl acetate and … Lire la suite
