1974 — Lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase of human plasmaRésumé
The initial rate of reaction of lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) in human plasma was determined by the measurement of plasma unesterified cholesterol by gas liquid chromatography. With this technique, the rate of plasma cholesterol esterification was linear to approximately 40 min. The Mean plasma LCAT activity in a group of eight male subjects (87 nmoles cholesterol esterified/hr per ml of plasma) was significantly higher (p < 0.01) than that in a group of seven female subjects (61 nmoIes/ hr per ml of plasma) with the same age average. Addition of HDL or HDL3 did not change the initial rate of … Lire la suite

1974 — Simulation model of a hospital biochemistry laboratoryRésumé
This thesis discusses some of the Operations Research efforts in the health care field, the theory and implementation of simulation techniques, and a deatiled model of the Biochemistry Laboratory of teh Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal. Particular attention is given to an arriva; generation technique in which the arrival rate varies and the arrivals themselves are batched. Validation and expermiental runs are discussed, the latter with an orientation towards the impact of the implications on Management. Numerous computer generated plots are included in the appendices. The model is sufficiently general to be applied to other hospital laboratories. Lire la suite

1974 — The elimination of growth rate as the factor responsible for cellular aberration in Arthrobacter globiformis 425Résumé
When deprived of biotin, Arthrobacter globiformis 425 exhibits abnormal morphology, and a depression of its normal growth rate. When cells were grown under glucose limitation in chemostat cultures, the morphology was normal at specific growth rates between 0.05 and 0.125 per hour (doubling times between 14 and 5.5 hours) at 25°C. At the same specific growth rates and temperature, but under biotin limitation, aberrant morphology was observed. Therefore, cellular aberration is not the result of a reduced growth rate, but probably is due to the impairment of reactions in cell wall synthesis which require biotin as a cofactor. Growth-limiting concentrations … Lire la suite

1974 — The effect of gas physical properties and flow rate on pulmonary ventilation and gas exchange.Résumé
