1975 — A correlated light and electron microscope study of hyperplasia and neoplasia in the thyroid gland of rat.Résumé
A correlated light and electron microscope study ls presented of hyperplasia and neoplasia in rat thyroid glands exposed to X-irradiation, prolonged dietary iodine deficiency, or both. The following tissues are examined and compared: normal thyroid; hyperplastic thyroid; thyroid tumour nodule; modified hyperplastic thyroid near tumour nodule; parathyroid infiltrated by thyroid tumour nodule; and thyroid tumour extend1ng throughout a thyroid lobe. Original observations relating to the architecture and cytology of these tissues are reported and discussed. These observations concern: contiguity between thyroid follicles; folllole proximity to blood vessels; light cells; luminal colloid; psammoma bodies; intraluminal cells; microlumina; cell interdigitations; basal lamina; … Lire la suite

1975 — Thyroxin and development of hepatic microsomal drug oxidation and electron transport in man and rats.Résumé
1975 — Studies of the brain isoenzyme of creatine kinase: Immunochemical evidence for a possible control mechanism in cardiac and skeletal muscleRésumé
Developmentally mature mammalian striated muscle contains minimal activity of the BB isoenzyme of creatine kinase. Most creatine kinase activity is attributable to the MM and MB isoenzymes. Fetal and, frequently, pathological muscle contain substantial BS activity. I have studied SS in normal and pathological rabbit muscles to learn about its role and regulation in these tissues. After I developed an automated fluorometric assay for creatine kinase, I purified SS from rabbit brain. Antibodies to the purified isoenzyme reacted specifically with SB but not with MM or MB. I observed substantial quantities of immunoreactive, enzymatically inactive BS in normal mature rabbit … Lire la suite

1975 — Fathers Alone: A Comparison of the Functioning Of Vale-Headed Single Parent Families With That of Female-Headed Single Parent FamiliesRésumé
This study attempted to compare the functioning of female-headed single-parent families with that of male-headed single-parent families. The family functioning of the two groups was examined in terms of four structural areas, i.e., the task structure, the communication structure, the power structure and the affectional structure. The purpose of the study was to identify any possible similarities and differences in the functioning of male-headed single-parent families. Lire la suite

1975 — Social Correlates of FatnessRésumé
"This study approached fatness from a sociological perspective, focussing on the social dimensions of being overweight. While this approach was pursued single-mindedly in this study, the complexity of factors involved in the overweight phenomenon cannot be overstated. Obesity was considered in the context of a transactional theory of deviance. Some theoretical perspectives on social deviance and stigma provided a rich framework in which to consider the social implications of being fat. The hypothesis on which the study was based was that overweight people who seek help for their fatness approximately conform to theoretical descriptions of secondary deviants, while overweight people … Lire la suite

1975 — The role of intestinal gastrin in gastric secretionRésumé
Six dogs provided with Heidenhain pouches were subjected to complete antrectomy with restoration of gastrointestinal continuity by means of a Billroth I (3 dogs), or Billroth II (3 dogs) anastomosis. Post-antrectomy pouch secretion in response to a test meal verified the presence of an "intestinal phase" of gastric secretion. Serum gastrin levels did not rise significantly from basal values, in response to, the test meal in either the Billroth I or Billroth II dogs following antrectomy. However, the serum gastrin rise noted in the Billroth II dogs was very near the level of significance of 5%; whereas the rise noted … Lire la suite

1975 — Michel 'Aflaq: a Biographical Study of his Approach to Arabism.Résumé
The study attempts to determine the extent to which Arab nationalism, as expressed tn the writings of Michel 'Aflaq, may be considered truly secular. The analysis of 'Aflaq's published essays and speeches focuses upon his treatment of religion in general and of Islam in particular. In order to present a valid analysis of his writings, the origins of 'Aflaq's thinking are traced to the experiences and influences he underwent. Lire la suite

1975 — Michel 'Aflaq : a biographical study of his approach to ArabismRésumé
The study attempts to determine the extent to which Arab nationalism, as expressed in the writings of Michel Aflaq, may be considered truly secular. The analysis of Aflaq's published essays and speeches focuses upon his treatment of religion in general and of Islam in particular. In order to present a valid analysis of his writlngs, the origins of Aflaq's thinking are traced to the experiences and influences he underwent. It is shown that, although Aflaq uses religious terms and concepts, he deprives them of all supra-human implications. Thus, the particularism engendered by different religious modes of worshlp loses much of … Lire la suite

1975 — Toneme perception in the Yoruba languageRésumé

1975 — Hot Wire Measurements in a Two Dimensional Turbulent WakeRésumé
Hot wire measurements in a two dimensional wake generated by a circular cylinder have been made. The results show close agreement with unpublished data by Champagne and with published data by Thomas. When comparing data, the pressure gradient must be considered. A negative pressure gradient seems to increase the rate of decay of the wake mean velocities end wake turbulence. Cylinder roughness and Reynolds number had little effect on the wake parameters. Free stream turbulence appears to reinforce the wake turbulence at least to some degree. Lire la suite

1975 — The Implementation of Differential Treatment: A case study of a Residential Program for Young OffendersRésumé
The juvenile correctional field has been searching for innovative directions and treatment programs for many years. This research study examines two treatment-relevant typologies, the I level and the Conceptual Level theories, which have been considered to be innovative approaches to juvenile delinquency. The study focuses on the implementation of these two classification systems in a small residential center for young offenders. It attempts to explore the degree to which the treatment instruments are implemented as prescribed by the theoretical models. It is emphasized that the effectiveness of a given treatment-relevant typology cannot be determined before it is evident that the … Lire la suite
