1977 — The effects of hemorrhage on the lung of the pig with comments relative to humans.Résumé
A reproducible model utilizing the young pig for the study of the pulmonary effects of severe acute hemorrhage is presented. Several variables of pulmonary function were investigated in control, bled and bled-reinfused animals. Comparisons between and within the groups were made of minute ventilation, arterial and mixed venous blood gas tensions, systemic and pulmonary hemodynamics, screen filtration pressure of aortic and mixed venous blood, post-mortem pathology and lung water content. Statistically significant differences in most of the parameters were demonstrated variously between and within the groups. Additional protocols investigated changes in both the inflation and deflation limbs of sequential in … Lire la suite

1977 — Inhibitory Effect of Keto Acids on Muscle Protein DenaturationRésumé
"Three among five keto acids, ~amely oxaloacetic acid, a - keto glutaric acid and pyruvic acid, were shown to have some inhibitory effects on denaturation of muscle protein caused by frozen storage or by gamma irradiation. The degree of protein denaturation was estimated by measurements of protein solubility in KCl solution (0.6 M, pH 7 . 4), on changes in swelling capacity (i.e . extract-release-volume) and on amount of thaw exudate. The presence of 0.1 % and above of sodium salt of these keto acids in chicken, beef or fish muscle homogenate reduced protein insolubilization caused by the freezing-thawing- refreezing … Lire la suite

1977 — Effects of exogenous cyclic AMP of the canine cardiovascular system in hemorrhagic shock.Résumé
Hemorrhagic shock induces potentially damaging alterations in the metabolism of cyclic AMP, which is an intracellular second messenger for many hormones. The hypothesis that the administration of exogenous cAMP might have salutary effects on cardiovascular hemodynamics in shock was tested in canine experiments. Intravenous bolus injection of dibutyryl cyclic AMP (2 mg/kg) produced hyperglycemia but no changes occurred in heart rate, arterial pressure, cardiac output or left ventricular dp/dt. The findings were similar in both conscious and anesthetized (Nembutal) normotensive dogs, l dogs after three hours of shock (at B. P. 40 mmHg), and after reinfusion of the shed blood. … Lire la suite

1977 — Testicular chalones in the ratRésumé

1977 — Lung metabolism and morphology in respiratory failure.Résumé
