1979 — Isolation and characterization of crystalline and non-crystalline proteins from phaseolus beansRésumé
Proteins were isolated from acidic extracts and alkaline extracts of white kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), navy beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and baby lima beans (Phaseolus lunatus). The proteins were examined under a light microscope and a Scanning Electron Microscope. The isolated proteins had different microscopic structures; the structures depended on the conditions (pH and normality of extractant) of extraction. The various protein preparations were analysed for phytic acid, carbohydrates and citric acid. The nature of the protein-phytic acid reaction which takes place during the isolation of the proteins was investigated. The proteins that were isolated from the citric acid extracts and … Lire la suite

1979 — Entrapment characteristics in a recirculating eddyRésumé
This thesis is concerned with the study of pollutant effluents discharged from a side channel into rivers or coastal cross currents. Experiments were carried out to study the reattachment of the jet effluent and the entrapment of pollutant in the recirculating eddy immediately downstream of the discharge channel. The flow was simulated in the laboratory by discharging dyed water from a side channel perpendicularly into an open channel crossflow. Geometric characteristics of the reattachment eddy were obtained from flow visualization. The transient variation of dye concentration in the eddy was determined from a series of light absorption probes, which were … Lire la suite

1979 — Government and private pensions in CanadaRésumé
This study is concerned with the relative importance of government and private pensions in Canada. The examination of data on retirement income of older persons shows that government pension payments are their most important source of income. These figures indicate the serious limitations of private pension plans as sources of retirement income for a significant proportion of the population. These limitations are due to the nature of these plans - their lack of universality, restrictions on the vesting of benefits and the inability of plans based on savings to guarantee pensions in real terms in a economy subject to varying … Lire la suite

1979 — Les métaphores animales dans GerminalRésumé
The animal metaphors of Germinal represent a well enough distinct framework to be considered as a global and significant entity. A concise survey of the history of rhetoric does establish the present importance of the metaphor which far from being a simple ornament of the speech has extended its meaning into new perspectives. Applied to other areas of knowledge, as semiotic, sociology, mythology and speech subconscious processes, the metaphor represents newer ways of thinking and assists in grasping the soul of the written word. The present work aims at being an analysis of the text and not of the style. In … Lire la suite

1979 — Estimating returns to scale in selected manufacturing industries in CanadaRésumé

1979 — Historical explanation and the deductive criterionRésumé

1979 — The structural and functional evolution of the diapsid tarsusRésumé
During the· evolution of diapsids, the tarsus underwent considerable structural change. An analysis of the mechanics of each kind of tarsus based on x-ray studies of locomotion and studies of the structure of the pelvic limb in extant diapsids indicates that the early structural changes are related to the development of an intratarsal joint and consolidation of the metatarsus. Primitively, warping of the distal tarsal row was an integral part of the functioning of the tarsus. Key changes in the origin of the lizard tarsus were changes in the joints that eliminated the need for this movement of the distal … Lire la suite

1979 — Ottawa and Quebec : the politics of confrontation, 1967Résumé
This work deals with the relationship between the Canadian Federal Government and the Government of Quebec from January 1967 - February 1968. It treats both governments as members of a dyad but differs from other studies of dyadic conflict in a number of important ways. Whereas other investigations have examined the dyadic behavior of sovereign states, this work explores the relationship between a federal and a provincial government within an ethnically-divided federation. In so doing, concepts and methods normally reserved to the field of international relations are applied to this particular type of domestic conflict. Second, rather than examining only … Lire la suite
