1981 — The development of a combined reversed-phase chromatographic amperometric detection method for the assay of serum thyriod hormones /Résumé
The principle of the combined reversed-phase chromatographic electrochemical detection assay of the major serum thyroid hormones is demonstrated. The separation of 3,3',5-triiodothyronine (T(,3)), 3,3',5'-triiodothyronine (rT(,3)) and 3,5,3',5'-tetraiodothyronine (T(,4)) has been studied as a function of solvent strength, pH, temperature and ionic strength. Detection was carried out using a thin-layer electrochemical detection cell set at 1.500 V containing a new material, low temperature isotropic carbon, as a working electrode. This material was evaluated against carbon paste and using it, subnanogram detection limits were noted for the above analytes under defined conditions. Investigation of the feasibility of this analysis applied to 1.0 … Lire la suite

1981 — Using frame-to-frame coherence in three-dimensional computer animationRésumé

1981 — Size and shape of airborne asbestos fibres in mining and mineral processing environmentsRésumé
The dimensions of airborne fibres collected at various stages of fibre processing in mines and mills producing crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile asbestos were measured by using light optical and electron microscopy. Airborne fibres of different asbestos types had markedly different size and shape distributions. For a given asbestos type, airborne fibres collected at various stages of processing differed in their size distributions but the differences were considerably less than between fibre types. Most of the airborne fibres to which miners and millers were exposed were short, thin and thus respirable. The proportions of long fibres in the air of crocidolite …

1981 — Continuous functions and exceptional sets in potential theoryRésumé

1981 — The contributions of Anglophone African novelists to the novel /Résumé
The works of important Anglophone African novelists, in particular those who have contributed to the growing body of literary criticism, support their claim that there is a distinctive African novel. Their novels clearly demonstrate the attachment of the novel form to the specific cultural, social and political milieu in which it is produced. The thematic concerns of Anglophone African novelists have far-reaching effects on their treatment of subject-matter and on their narrative methods. The structures of certain important novels reveal patterns of experience which are typical of African societies. Symbols and motifs which are used to further structural development in … Lire la suite

1981 — Towards a philosophy of imagination : a study of Gilbert Durand and Paul RicoeurRésumé
A satisfactory definition of the imagination has proved elusive in Western philosophy. Two contemporary French thinkers, Gilbert Durand and Paul Ricoeur, are concerned with establishing a fundamental philosophy of imagination. For Durand the imagination is the source of symbolic mediations that are both therapeutic and theophanic. His theory is grounded in a Platonist-esoteric tradition which he supports by a philosophy of the imaginal (coined and articulated by Henry Corbin, a French Islamicist). Ricoeur, in contrast, sees the imagination as a creative cognitive mediator in a dialectic model of knowledge. Within a critical framework the imagination functions at the limits of … Lire la suite

1981 — A simplified method for freeze-fracture radioautography /Résumé
A new, simplified technique for the radioautography of freeze-fracture specimens has been developed using freeze-fractured liver tissues from rats given injection of ('3)H-thymidine following partial hepatectomy, or intestine from rats given injection of ('3)H-fucose. The specimens are fractured, replicated with platinum and carbon, and freeze-dried in-vacuo in about six hours. The replicated side of the specimen is covered with Ilford L(,4) emulsion for radioautography. After exposure and photographic processing, the emulsion is protected in three ways before removing the tissue underlying the replica by digestion in sodium hypochlorite solution: its silver grains are coated with gold, a carbon layer is … Lire la suite

1981 — A study on pre-Islamic survivals in a Turkish-Islamic text: the Vilâyet-nâmeRésumé
The religious history of the Turkish people of Anatolia in the first few centuries after their entry into the peninsula remains obscure. This obscurity can be partially dispersed only through detailed analyses of the few religious works of early Muslim-Turkish literature. One such work, namely the legendary biography of the pir of the Bektasi order known as the Manakib-i Haci Bektasi Veli, or simply the Vilayet-name, is here subjected to a critical analysis with the purpose of identifying the survivals of pre- Islamic Turkish beliefs within it. After an initial effort to place the Vilayet-name into its proper historical context, … Lire la suite

1981 — The Effect of Randomly Varying Added Mass on the Dynamics of a Flexible Cylinder in Two-Phase Axially Flowing FluidRésumé
This thesis investigates the effect of randomly varying added mass on the dynamics of a flexible cylinder in an external axial two-phase flow, bounded by a rigid immobile channel. The behaviour of a cylinder in two-phase flow has been found to be very different and less predictable than in single-phase flow. Experiments have shown that damping is significantly higher in simulated two-phase flows, depending on the flow regime, and that the hydrodynamic or added mass decreases with increasing void fraction, but at a higher rate than that of the mixture density. […] Lire la suite

1981 — The public sector and economic growth in Nigeria : policy simulation with partial adjustment modelsRésumé
Following the sharp rise in oil prices in late 1973 and early 1974, most oil exporting countries adopted highly expansionary fiscal and monetary policies aimed at rapid development of their economies. In Nigeria the role of the public sector since then has been significantly increased as most of the oil revenue accrues directly to the Federal government rather than to individuals. Given the host of economic problems faced by the country in the 1970s the debate over the role of the public sector in a mixed capitalist economy in the process of economic growth gains more relevance. The essence of … Lire la suite

1981 — The two solitudes reexamined : pluralism and inequality in QuebecRésumé
This study presents a series of empirical tests of two influential theoretical perspectives on the industrialization and modernization of polyethnic societies. On the one hand, the functionalist perspective predicts that cultural diversity and pluralism will decline, that group inequalities will decrease, and that communal conflict should become less likely over time. The communal competition perspective, on the other hand, predicts that cultural diversity and pluralism will not necessarily wither away, that group inequalities will not inevitably be reduced, and that communal conflict is a possibility at any point in time. Hypotheses derived from these two perspectives are tested using survey … Lire la suite

1981 — The synthesis and characterization of platinum complexes containing thiolate and catenated polysulfur ligands /Résumé
The complexes L(,2)Pt(SR)(,2), where L = PPh(,3), PMePh(,2), PMe(,2)Ph, were prepared in high purity and yield by treating the dichlorides with thiols and triethylamine under nitrogen atmosphere. Their geometry is cis for R = ('n)Pr, ('i)Pr, CH(,2)Ph and trans for R = 4-C(,6)H(,4)Me. Reactions of cis-L(,2)PtCl(,2) and H(,2)S/K(,2)CO(,3) or NaSH in the presence of dichloromethane afforded the complexes L(,2)Pt(S(,2)CH(,2)), containing the novel bidentate methanedithiolato ligand. The thiolato-bridged dimers {LPt(SR')(,2)}(,2), where R' = CH(,2)Ph, 4-C(,6)H(,4)Me, were isolated by fusion of the appropriate monomers in vacuo. The compound {(PMePh(,2))Pt(SCH(,2)Ph)((mu)-SCH(,2)Ph)}(,2) has the cis-symmetrical structure. Treatment of the complexes cis-L(,2)Pt(SCH(,2)Ph)(,2) with phtNSSNpht, where H-Npht … Lire la suite
