The organization and structure of the leghemoglobin (Lb) genes in soybean have been investigated. Using molecular cloning techniques, a Lb-cDNA recombinant molecule, pLb1, was prepared and characterized. Hybridization of this clone of genomic DNA revealed the presence of at least seven Lb genes in the soybean genome. The arrangement of these genes appeared to be the same in DNA isolated from infected or uninfected tissues. The plasmid pLb1 was also used to isolate three Lb sequences from a genomic library constructed in (lamda) Charon4 vector. This study attempts to extend the scope of existing analyses of unemployment in Jamaica by exploring empirically one aspect of the relation between demand and unemployment. The central hypothesis is that the structure of consumer expenditures which result from a highly skewed income distribution pattern is a cause of continuing high levels of unemployment. A static Leontieff-type input-output model is used to generate solutions for industry output levels and associated employment levels, for alternative expenditure patterns resulting from income redistribution. The aim of these studies was the isolation of corticotropic factors other than ACTH(,1-39) from the bovine and human fetal pituitary gland. The bovine anterior pituitary contains three corticotropic peptides, ACTH(,1-39), ACTH(,1-38) and a putative ACTH(,1-33). The bovine neurointermediate lobe did not contain corticotropic factors different from those found in the anterior lobe. ACTH(,1-38) is formed enzymatically in the fetal calf anterior lobe from ACTH(,1-39). The formation of both peptides in the fetal calf anterior pituitary cell in culture is stimulated by arginine-vasopressin, and a fetal calf hypothalamic extract, and is inhibited by dexamethasone. The tables describing the geometry of the yield surface are derived. They concern only fcc metals which undergo isotropic hardening, and which glide on the 24 {111} slip systems. The tables list all five dimensional vertices, and edges of the fourth, third and second order limiting the yield surface as well as the slip systems with which they are associated. A direct method for calculating the yield vectors for any orientation, in five dimensional stress space is established, which enables the user to obtain the yield surface without need of knowing the six deviator stress components. This study is an attempt to construct a theoretical and descriptive framework for the analysis of lexicogrammatical, semantic and semiotic cohesion, called the Extended Systemic Cohesive Model. This model is an extension of the Halliday-Hasan model (1976) whose descriptive range is limited to lexicogrammatical cohesion. The classical hypothesis that cohesion is realized through the lexicogrammatical system is proved to be inadequate. An alternative thesis is proposed and justified: that cohesion is captured at lexicogrammatical, semantic and semiotic levels. Lower critical solubility temperatures (LCST) have been measured for polyethylene (PE), polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymers, polybutene-1, polypentene-1 and poly 4-methylpentene-1 (P4MP1) in twenty-five isomeric alkanes. The LCST for PE are much lower than for branched polyolefins, especially in branched alkanes. The results are not predicted by the Prigogine-Flory-Patterson theory but are understood in terms of correlations of molecular orientations in the PE melt. Fusion thermodynamics of P4MP1 confirm the existence of ordered conformations in the melt. The thermoreversible gelation of P4MP1 solutions depends on solvent and thermal history. The holonomy group arising from a linear connection and differential homotopy is a classical subject in geometry. The notion was generalized first by Y. Muto ({10}) by considering horizontal subspaces in a fibred space which by construction is a differential manifold over a base space with another manifold as the fibre. He called this generalized group the restricted holonomy group Hl('o)((')M). Unlike the case of frame bundles the horizontal subspaces in a fibred space do not in general obey the right invariant rule. Large strain tensile tests were carried out on OFHC Cu and 99.99% Al with the aim of determining the first and second order work hardening and rate sensitivity coefficients. The tests were performed at room temperature and 473 K and at constant true strain rates in the range 5 x 10('-4) to 10('-1) s('-1). With the aid of a diameter transducer, which was set up to measure and control the rate of reduction of the diameter of the tensile specimen, the strain rate at the minimum cross-section was held constant well beyond the point of maximum load. Dans cette etude, en utilisant une simulation numerique nonlineaire a deux dimensions d'une couche stratifiee, decollee et visqueuse, on obtint des resultats interessants a partir des cas correspondant a l'interaction resonnante d'une onde longue a stabilite neutre et d'une onde courte qui croit la plus rapidement selon la theorie lineaire. En utilisant certaines conditions initiales, l'onde courte croit initialement a un taux cinq fois superieur a celui predit par la theorie lineaire. Avec d'autres conditions initiales l'onde courte decroit. La possibilite de ce genre d'interaction est predite par la theorie faiblement nonlineaire (voir Maslowe, 1977). Cutaneous electrical stimulation and standard neurological examination were compared for their effectiveness in detecting the presence of cutaneous sensation in children with an open myelomeningocele caudal to and including the second lumbar level. The test population consisted of children who attended a clinic at the Shriner's Hospital in Montreal, Quebec, specialized for treatment of myelodysplasia. Each child was evaluated by both methods, each being performed by a different evaluator who was unaware of the results obtained by the other.  Lire la suite
