1982 — Anger arousal in child abuse counselling : an experimental evaluation of systematic desensitization and cognitive self-control training proceduresRésumé
The present study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of systematic desensitization and cognitive self-control training procedures in reducing anger arousal, overt hostility, and aggression; and their effectiveness in increasing constructive action in therapists conducting counselling interviews with child abusers. Thirty graduate social work students who indicated that they sometimes become at least mildly angry toward parents or caretakers who physically abuse children participated in the study. The students who volunteered for the study were randomly assigned to three treatment conditions in a pretest/posttest control group design. Anger was aroused experimentally in the subjects using laboratory provocations which consisted of …

[…] Lire la suite

1982 — The Sun Also Rises and the Production of MeaningRésumé

1982 — B-cell differentiation and maturation in the bone marrow : heterogeneity of B-cell precursors assessed by the appearance of age-related markers in functionally defined populationsRésumé
We have used a functional in vitro assay to define several populations of B-cell and B-cell precursors normally present in the murine bone marrow. A multi-parameter analysis of cells (including size, polyclonal activation requirements and kinetics of recruitment to IgM secretion, membrane IgM expression, nylon-wool adherence properties and proliferative status) has permitted the resolution of up to 10 populations. Cells showing a delayed kinetics of development to plasma cells as compared to small B-lymphocytes were also found immature with respect to age-related markers. The appearance of characteristic markers (nylon wood adherence, membrane IgM) and functional properties (LPS-responsiveness) was traced within … Lire la suite

1982 — Racah algebra for SU(2) in a point group basis ; finite subgroup polynomial bases for SU(3)Résumé
Integrity bases for tensors of type (GAMMA)(,r) whose components are polynomials in the components of tensors of type (GAMMA)(,5) ((GAMMA)(,6) for ('(d))O) are given explicitely for the double tetrahedral and octahedral point groups (('(d))T and ('(d))O), where the main axis of symmetry is trigonal. We formulate analytic basis states for the decomposition of SU(2) through the chain ('(d))T (R-HOOK) ('(d))C(,3) (R-HOOK) ('(d))C(,1) and use them to construct the Racah algebra. A method is given for deriving branching rules, in the form of generating functions, for the decomposition of representations of SU(3) into representations of its finite subgroups. Interpreted in terms … Lire la suite

1982 — Relationship between ferromagnetic particles and airborne chrysotile fibres in the asbestos mines and mills of QuebecRésumé
Examination of Chrysotile Asbestos from the Eastern Townships of Quebec using optical and electron microscopic methods has shown that Chrysotile fibres are intimately associated with minute particles of magnetite. Measurements were made using a fluxgate magnetometer of the remnant magnetic fields of bulk commercial fibres and of airborne total dust and of the respirable fraction of airborne dust collected in Quebec asbestos mines and mills using a Hexhlet horizontal eleutriator. The validity of the Hexhlet horizontal eleutriator for respirable fibre collection in the mill environment was determined. It was observed that the remnant magnetic field intensities of airborne dust in … Lire la suite

1982 — The influence of confinement on the propagation of near limit detonation waves /Résumé
This thesis reports on a detailed experimental investigation of near limit ethylene-air detonation phenomena in tubes. The different detonation regimes were determined as a function of ignition energy, composition and stability for a specific tube diameter. The dependence of single head spin detonations on the tube diameter was further investigated. This study has revealed that the different near limit regimes are governed by the acoustic coupling with the tube walls and can be influenced by the energy of the ignition source. The effective source energy and the distance over which this energy will support a detonation phenomenon have been quantified. … Lire la suite

1982 — Groups of measurable and measure preserving transformationsRésumé
In chapters I and II, we show that the group G of invertible, non-singular transformations of a Lebesgue space is perfect, simple, and has no outer automorphisms. Some related results are obtained for the subgroup of measure preserving transformations and for the full group of an ergodic transformation. Further results are given with the underlying Lebesgue space replaced by a homogeneous measure algebra. It is also shown, in chapter III, that ergodic transformations are algebraically distinguishable from non-ergodics. Chapter IV introduces the notion of a fibered ergodic transformation. A fibered analogue of Dye's theorem is proved. In chapter V the … Lire la suite

1982 — An Evaluation of Winter Cereal Mixtures in QuebecRésumé
"An experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of winter cereals in mixtures compared to monocultures. Mixed cropping is an old concept applied to maximize productivity. Seven cultivars were grown in a diallel mixture design resulting in 28 binary combinations. OAC-HALTON barley has 3 undesirable characteristics resulting in reduced grain yield. It suffers from winter killing. Shatters readily and has asynchronous tiller maturity. YORKSTAR wheat performed better than SUNDANCE both in mixtures and pure stands. There were no significant differences in grain yields of 3 rye cultivars. OAC WINTRI showed good performance. It is difficult to draw conclusions based on … Lire la suite

1982 — Analysis and continuous simulation of secure-economic operation of power systemsRésumé
The present thesis, for the most part, is concerned with the application of continuous optimization to the secure-economic dispatching of thermal power plants. The general concept of the continuous simulation of the optimum operation of power systems is introduced. This is the characterization of the solution trajectory of the underlying dispatching model as the loads vary along a forecasted trajectory, or as the system parameters continuously change. An efficient continuation algorithm is developed which characterizes the solution trajectory of a secure-economic dispatch model, given a piecewise linear trajectory of the bus loads, parameterized in terms of the system load. The … Lire la suite

1982 — A study of microbial spoilage of beef stored at chill temperatures /Résumé
Initial experiments were conducted to determine the microbial development in blocks of ground beef. In the top layers of the meat, Pseudomonas spp. predominated. Attempts were made, as well, to measure the microenvironmental changes occurring in ground beef using pH, oxygen, and redox potential micro-electrodes. Some of the extrinsic (relative humidity, O(,2)), as well as intrinsic factors (pH, redox potential, ions, nutrients) affecting microbial development in aerobically stored meats, were examined. The decrease in glucose levels observed during the aerobic storage of longissimus dorsi (l. dorsi) muscle at 4(DEGREES)C, was accompanied by an increase in the activity of glucose dehydrogenase, … Lire la suite

1982 — Isolation and characterization of organ specific neoantigen from the urine of lung cancer patientsRésumé
Organ specific neoantigen (OSN) is shed from cancer of patients with metastatic lung cancer and is filtered into the urine. The OSN was purified and characterized by physicochemical methods. OSN activity was detected by the blocking of the tube LAI assay. Two different methods are described for isolating the OSN. By both procedures material was isolated that consisted of three to four polypeptide chains in the molecular weight range of 43,000 to 31,000 dalton and that had high OSN activity. Urinary protein isolated from normal subjects by the same methods did not have OSN activity and also lacked the 31,000 … Lire la suite

1982 — Static load-bearing characteristics of the in vitro talocrural articulation subjected to internal-external torqueRésumé
The response of the human talocrural articulation to internal and external torques was investigated in an in vitro study. Experimental and theoretical methods were used to evaluate this response in terms of (1) displacement between the tibia and the talus, (2) tension in the major ligamentous structures of the joint, and (3) stresses in the bones of the talocrural joint mortise. The experimental investigation involved the design and fabrication of several testing and measurement instruments, including a three-dimensional joint loading apparatus, a six degrees-of-freedom displacement measuring device, and several implantable, non-destructive ligament tension transducers. The stress distribution in the talocrural … Lire la suite

1982 — Regulation of lymphocyte production in the bone marrowRésumé
Bone marrow continuously produces many B lymphocytes but the homeostatic mechanisms regulating this process are unknown. Two possible factors, the size of the B lymphocyte pool and antigenic stimulation, were examined, using radioautographic DNA-labeling with ('3)H-thymidine to quantitate lymphocyte turnover. In mice injected with anti-IgM antibodies from birth to delete all surface IgM-bearing B lymphocytes the rate of production of small lymphocytes per femur was indistinguishable from controls. In contrast, an injection of sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) in normal mice produced a transient increase in small lymphocyte turnover and increased numbers of both of immature B cells and of null small … Lire la suite
