Hepatic alpha-adrenoceptors have been characterized pharmacologically and biochemically. In isolated rat liver cells, activation of glycogen phosphorylase by adrenergic agonists and its inhibition by subsite selective antagonists are mediated by alpha(,1)-receptors that do not display the phenomenon of receptor reserve. When tested in dilute cell suspensions to minimize uptake and metabolism of ligands, these receptors have properties indistinguishable from those of alpha(,1)-receptors in other tissues. In purified liver plasma membranes, the reversible radioligand {('3)H}prazosin labels a single population of high affinity binding sites with properties similar to the alpha(,1)-receptors mediating the glycogenolytic response of intact cells. Methyl 4-trimethylsilyl-3-dialkylaminocrotonate is synthesized by the silylation of methyl 3-dialkylaminocrotonate. It reacts with carbonyl electrophiles at its (gamma)-position. The unusual regiochemistry of this reaction is studied and rationalized. It reacts with enamines derived from acyclic ketones or cycloketones of large ring size (of 12 and 15 membered rings) to give aromatic compounds in a 3C + 3C combination and with enamines derived from cycloketones of 5-8 membered rings to give aromatic compounds in a 4C + 2C combination. The mechanism of this cycloaromatization reaction is investigated. meta-Cyclophanes with a morpholino substituent are synthesized by the above cycloaromatization reaction. Single bubble theoretical models were developed to simulate heterogeneous pool boiling (HPB) of pure liquids on a single site in a natural surface. A dynamic model was developed for bubble nucleation in HPB for predicting the waiting time of a bubble for given boiling conditions. The variation of the surface temperature was incorporated through an additional model proposed for the same. Its application to equilibrium pool boiling of pure components and binary mixtures predicted waiting times in agreement with the experimental values obtained here. The introduction of this dissertation discusses geopolitical and socio-economic factors which influence transportation in Africa. Chapters II and III, respectively, analyse the concept of regionalism and the legal framework of multinational civil aviation co-operation. The economic advantages of surface and air transportation are compared in Chapter IV. Chapter V is a general survey of the impact of nationalism on sociopolitical problems in economic and aeronautical co-operation, the former East African Community is reviewed in Chapter VI. Let (GAMMA) be a discrete group of hyperbolic isometries having a fundamental polygon with finitely many sides and no cusps. We show that the associated horocycle flow admits just one ergodic measure which is not concentrated on a single orbit. We use ergodicity of this measure to calculate the ratio set of the Patterson measure of (GAMMA).  Lire la suite

Characterization of the most frequently isolated virus found during a survey of eastern Ontario red clover fields, which was designated as the Ottawa isolate, was undertaken. Determination of the biological and physico-chemical properties of the virus showed that the virus studied differed in some respects from other WCMV isolates. An ultrastructural examination of virus localization of cytopathological changes in infected red clover and pea plants revealed various types of viral inclusions, including a membrane-bound mass of tubules, not usually associated with infection by potexviruses, in red clover leaves, and severe organelle disorganization within pea leaf tissues. This thesis examines the forms of utopianism which developed in U.S. fiction after the Civil War, from Mark Twain to Jack London. It covers the genres and subgenres of the utopia of reform, the fiction of occult utopianism, the lost-race romance, the post-catastrophe utopia, and the dystopia. Its central argument is that utopianism provides a means of developing alternative horizons of historiosophy and of building images of otherness, as it is also an argumentative apparatus which allows utopists to comment on their empirical society, as the other side of otherness. This study is an evaluation of a natural support system, a community-based programme serving the aged living alone. A Telephone Reassurance Service was chosen to demonstrate the capacity of a low technology service to enhance the Well-Being of this growing segment of the population. The effect of the Telephone Service on an aged population was studied. The aim was to examine those who join, as opposed to those who do not; the benefits of the Service, as well as its costs. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the nature and role of the relation which exists between the revelation of God to man, and ethics. Within Protestant Christianity two major schools of thought are involved in active debate over the issue. We have selected Reinhold Niebuhr of the neo-orthodox wing and Carl F. H. Henry as the evangelical spokesman, in view of comparing their concepts of revelation to their ethics. We proceed by asking whether the ethical systems of both Niebuhr and Henry are dependent, interdependent, or independent in relation to revelation. Mesidotea entomon inhabiting Pauline Cove, YT, is larger in total body length at sexual maturity than M. entomon inhabiting Dolomite Lake, NWT. The sex ratio, diet, habitat distributions, size frequency distributions, and fecundity in the two populations are compared. Total carbohydrate, protein, lipid, chitin, and ash contents of both isopods' life stages are compared. Isopods in the cove show reduced carbohydrate and elevated lipid levels. In the 1975, 1978, and 1979 summers, isopods in the cove were internally infected with an extracellular protozoan parasite; those in the lake were uninfected. The infection is systemic. The old tories were the most enduring group within the British Conservative parliamentary party between the two world wars: by taste, habit and convictions, independents in parliamentary traditions, yet loyal Conservatives in politics. They led the successful Conservative revolt against the coalition with Lloyd-George. In 1930 they tried to overthrow Stanley Baldwin, and opposed his disarmament policy and Imperial policy, especially in India, together with Winston Churchill. The thermomechanical history experienced by plastics melts and solids during processing leads to the development of microstructure, which directly influences the ultimate properties of the plastic articles. Therefore, besides the predictions of thermomechanical history, the prediction of microstructure represents an important aspect of the modeling of plastics processing. A comprehensive model has been developed to describe the behaviour of thermoplastic polymer melts during the injection molding process. The model, which deals with the three stages of the process (filling, packing and cooling), employs a viscoelastic constitutive equation and incorporates crystallization kinetics. In the early 1920s, discontent about freight rates led to a number of major political battles. Statistical analysis and a review of contemporary reports suggest that the economic importance of these issues was greatly exaggerated. They were blamed for problems which were mainly attributable to such factors as the world-wide recession, the movement of the terms of trade against agricultural producers or the trend towards industrial concentration. Anatomically, the stomach-proper of the adult mouse is composed of two parts, the corpus and pyloric antrum. By serially sectioning entire stomachs, and histologically reconstructing the stomach-proper, it has been shown that both areas contain numerous finger-like, epithelial infoldings or gastric units. Special attention was given to the units of the antrum, which by three-dimensional reconstruction appeared as tubes, generally having a single pit, a gland and connecting these an isthmus. Using light and electron microscopy, with or without ('3)H-thymidine radioautography, the renewal of gland cells was investigated. The reactions of 2,5-dimethoxytetrahydrofuran and 2,6-dimethoxytetrahydropyran with halotrimethylsilanes have unexpectedly given 1,4-dichloro-1,4-dimethoxybutane and 1,5-dihalo-1,5-dimethoxypentane, respectively. Some features of this reaction were investigated and a mechanism was proposed. It was shown that 1,4-dichloro-1,4-dimethoxybutane was a mild reagent for the conversion of primary amine and amide to the corresponding N-alkyl and N-acyl pyrroles, respectively. As part of these applications, 2-(2-formylpyrrol-1-yl)-4-methylpentanoic acid, a compound isolated from flue-cured tobacco, was synthesized. The use of acylpyrroles as active acylating agents was investigated.
