1984 — An Electrophysiological Study of the Connections and Neuropharmacology of Medial Hypothalamic Neurons of the RatRésumé
[…] Lire la suite

1984 — Power format radio : a study of Canadian Current Affairs RadioRésumé
The CBC Current Affairs program Sunday Morning is used as a case study to develop an appropriate theory and conceptual apparatus for the understanding of the relationship between the organisation of news-production and news-product. This relation is first identified as critical to the field of mass media studies in general, and news-research in particular. On the basis of this review a new model of news-as-discourse is proposed. In the examination of the radio program Sunday Morning this model and its conceptual categories are further developed and linked with other research in the sociology of news, the structuralist analysis of narrative, … Lire la suite

1984 — Fibroblast plasma membrane vesicles to study inborn errors of transportRésumé
A system was developed to study membrane transport in isolated human fibroblast plasma membrane vesicles, avoiding potential complications of intracellular binding and metabolism in the intact cell. Ten-fold enrichment of plasma membranes after subcellular fractionation was confirmed with appropriate markers. Transport competence was established by the following criteria: osmotic sensitivity, stereospecificity, temperature dependence, sodium gradient stimulation, response to ions and ionophores, saturability, and exchange properties. Methotrexate uptake was osmotically sensitive, temperature sensitive, saturable, and inhibited by folinic acid and phosphate. Measurement of lysine uptake was complicated by binding and lack of sodium dependence, but was stimulated by an interior-negative membrane … Lire la suite

1984 — The Autoradiographic Localization of Estrogen Binding Sites in Human Mammary LesionsRésumé

1984 — Electromyograph biofeedback and the treatment of chronic low back painRésumé
Sixty-six chronic low back pain sufferers, recruited through the media, were randomly divided into three groups. Following an assessment consisting of psychological questionnaires, pain monitoring and measurement of paraspinal electromyogram (EMG), one group received paraspinal EMG biofeedback, and a second group received a placebo treatment. The third group received no intervention. Two further assessments were carried out on all groups immediately after and three months after treatment. All groups showed significant reductions in pain, anxiety, depression and paraspinal EMG, but there were no differences among the groups. A regression analysis failed to identify subject characteristics which predicted positive outcome in … Lire la suite

1984 — Linguistic and Pragmatic Factors in the Acquisition of Text CompetenceRésumé
This dissertation examines the changing nature of the child's perception of the relationship between text and its intended audience, the world it describes, and the type of information it contains. Texts generated in the form of stories by children 4, 5 and 6 years of age are studied over a period of eighteen months. A movement away from a dependence on both context and interaction with a listener is observed in the children's texts as they become attuned to the plurilocal and non-dyadic nature of the type of text they are producing. Awareness of the text's non-obtrusive character is linked … Lire la suite

1984 — The neuroanatomical basis of the behavioral effects of amphetmine : an intracranial microinjection studyRésumé
This study examined the contributions of different brain areas to several of the behavior effects of amphetamine. The drug was micro-injected into each of six discreet brain sites in rats and the effects on behavior were examined. Amphetamine's rewarding effects were studied using the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm. Animals that had received injections into the nucleus accumbens showed a CPP, suggesting a rewarding effect of the drug. No effect was produced by injections into the medial frontal cortex, medial or lateral parts of the caudate nucleus, amygdala or the region around the area postrema. A conditioned taste aversion (CTA) … Lire la suite

1984 — Synthesis of phenolic natural productsRésumé
A new method for the acetalization of carbonyl compounds using chlorotrimethylsilane under mild conditions is described. Carbonyl compounds are acetalized by ethylene glycol with chlorotrimethylsilane. Two isomeric methyl olivetolates were synthesised by the condensation of 1,3-bis(trimethylsiloxy)-1-methoxybutadiene with the corresponding electrophilic components. This reaction has clearly indicated the discriminative behaviour of 1,3-bis(trimethylsiloxy)-1-methoxybutadiene towards different electrophilic sites thus leading to regio-selectivity. A new method for the synthesis of olivetol is described. This method provides a shorter route to olivetol from acyclic precursors. A new synthesis of (DELTA)('1)-tetrahydrocannabinol is described. The synthesis is patterned after biogenetic considerations. A new method for the synthesis … Lire la suite

1984 — Study of sealing mechanisms in aerated stabilization basins for bleached kraft wastewater sludgesRésumé
The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of using the Bleached Kraft wastewater sludges as a sealant to a permeable soil structure which could contain these liquids. The sludges used are either self-contained in wastewater, produced from treatment processes, or from the addition of chemical coagulant to the wastewater. The mechanisms of the sludge sealing phenomena which were investigated individually are divided into physical, physico-chemical, biophysical and bio-physico-chemical types of seals. Coarse sand #24 was found suitable for this sealing study as a particle size cut. Among the types of sealings studied, the bio-physical type of seals … Lire la suite

1984 — Theory of RingoidsRésumé
The aim of this thesis is to present coherently the theory of ringoids from a purely ring theoretical point of view. Chapter 1, 2 and 3 are devoted to extend the results in theory of non-commutative rings to ringoids. In Chapter 4 we characterize torsion theories in abelian categories by using techniques in topos theory. In Chapter 5 and 6 we apply the results in previous chapters to characterize torsion theories in ringoids and prove the additive Giraud's theorem. Lire la suite
