This thesis offers a phenomenological description of "artistic creativity" as a merely descriptive property denoting a necessary aspect of the intentional structure of the genetic processes associated to the accomplishment of artworks. In the first chapter, I interpret Edward Young's Conjectures on Original Composition, a text reputed to be at the source of our modern usage of "artistic creativity", in order to distinguish its evaluative meaning from its essentially descriptive sense. Following Noël Carroll's indications, I then try in the second chapter to offer a first characterization of this property in terms of a "mental capacity". Cette thèse examine le dynamique et contrôle d'un dirigeable autonome, extrêmement manoevrable, dépourvu d'ailerons et presque plus léger que l'air (ALTAV). Ce dirigeable est intrinsèquement instable dû à l'absence de surfaces stabilisatrices et aussi très succeptible au vent. Quatre propulseurs vectorisés sont utilisés pour assurer la stabilité en boucle fermée. Cette thèse concerne les améliorations au modèle dynamique existant, incluant l'incorporation des moments d'amortissements rotationnels du dirigeable, la traînée résultant des protubérances du dirigeable, les torques de réactions et moments gyroscopiques sur le dirigeable dû aux propulseurs. Les leishmanioses sont un groupe de maladies tropicales causées par le protozoaire Leishmania et transmises par la piqûre de phlébotomes. Les leishmanioses peuvent être divisées en trois formes cliniques: leishmaniose cutanée qui guérit sans traitement mais laisse des cicatrices, leishmaniose mucocutanée avec destruction des muqueuses du nez, de la bouche et de la gorge, et leishmaniose viscérale où les parasites quittent le site de la piqûre et se propagent jusqu'à la moelle osseuse, le foie et la rate. Cette recherche avait pour but l'évaluation de la compréhension en lecture en langue seconde (L2) selon deux théories: le Linguistic Interdependence Hypothesis (LIH) et le Linguistic Threshold Hypothesis (LTH). The aim of this work was to examine the effects of chlorine (Cl2) gas inhalation on airway dysfunction in a mouse model of irritant-induced asthma. Cl2 inhalation induces airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), bronchial epithelial cell damage, increased oxidative stress and airway inflammation, characterized by neutrophilia. While the effects of Cl2 inhalation had been previously characterized, mechanisms driving airway injury induced by Cl2 remained elusive. We hypothesized that oxidative stress following Cl2 was pivotally involved in mechanisms leading to airway injury. This dissertation develops and tests a new theoretical synthesis for understanding how armed groups keep their combatants fighting rather than deserting or defecting. It examines two basic methods of limiting desertion: keeping coercive control over combatants, and fostering norms of mutual cooperation among them. It argues that the effectiveness of each approach is conditioned by the degree to which combatants value the common aim of the success of the armed group. Norms of cooperation require a commitment to this common aim to be effective. Why do some symbolic acts of protest trigger mass mobilization while others do not? Why did riots following the public suicide of a young street vendor humiliated by local authorities in the Tunisian city of Monastir in March 2010 fail to escalate into mass mobilization while a quasi-identical event in the neighboring city of Sidi-Bouzid helped precipitate a successful revolution only few months later? This thesis explores the way in which, in Colombian competition law, whereas some market agents have been empowered, others have been disempowered. This thesis investigates the relation between bilingual spoken language comprehension and domain-general inhibitory control. There are potentially two ways in which inhibitory control may support bilingual spoken language processing. First, inhibitory control may help suppress specific word competitors activated in the course of lexical competition (e.g., "feet" or "fille", girl in French, given the target word "field"). Second, inhibitory control may support the global suppression of a non-target language such that bilinguals can focus on a particular language. The HIV-1 protein Nef plays an important role in HIV-1 pathogenesis, both in humans and mouse models. Indeed, transgenic (Tg) mice expressing Nef under the control of the human CD4 promoter develop many phenotypes that closely resemble those of AIDS patients. Using these Tg mice, we have studied the effects of Nef on lymph node stroma, namely on fibroblastic reticular cells (FRCs), and blood and lymphatic endothelial cells (BECs and LECs, respectively). In species with complex life cycles such as amphibians, population regulation can occur in one or multiple stages. Density effects in the larval, aquatic stage of the amphibian life cycle have been widely documented, leading many researchers to assume that this is the stage in which amphibian populations are regulated. However, recent evidence suggests that factors affecting survival and reproduction in the terrestrial stage may play a greater role in the growth and decline of amphibian populations than previously thought. The important connection between dynamics, structure and function of enzymes still remains unclear and is, hence, an interesting relationship to investigate. In this thesis, the enzymes NADH oxidase (NOX) from Thermus thermophilus and mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) protein tyrosine phosphatase B (PtpB) were chosen as systems to study the influence of solution conditions on protein structure and flexibility in relation to their catalytic activity. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) techniques were used in the study of NOX. A growing body of literature suggests biochar can ameliorate soil conditions and shows considerable potential as an affordable soil management tool to increase productivity and promote sustainable agriculture in the tropics—yet research on the use and promise of biochar for peasant farmers remains limited. This thesis addresses this gap in the literature through a case study from the Peruvian Amazon of indigenous biochar soil management that has evolved at the nexus of commercial charcoal production and swidden-fallow agroforestry. Although the importance of studying central constructs across different levels of experience has long been recognized, most research on psychological need satisfaction has focused on general need satisfaction or need satisfaction in specific, isolated domains or situations. The present thesis aims to address this problem by investigating the role of psychological need satisfaction in multiple domains simultaneously for motivational and well-being outcomes at different levels of generality, as well the interplay among domains. The most commonly accepted theory of muscle contraction, the "crossbridge theory", was postulated by A.F Huxley in 1957, and since then it has been widely accepted to model and explain how a muscle contracts. In order to reflect this highly intertwined field, the present thesis compares two works from the same franchise, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, a story mixing school-life drama with mystery and horror. The first chapter deals with the earliest instalment of Higurashi, a video game belonging to the visual novel genre. Cette thèse examine les aspects de la partitionnement et de la diffusion des solutés dans le cartilage articulaire ainsi que l'adsorption des solutés sur ses surfaces et discute leurs applications potentielles dans l'évaluation fonctionnelle du cartilage. Étude de la dépendance de la température de transport de soluté dans le cartilage a montré une tendance générale de l'augmentation du coefficient de partage et de la diffusivité à température croissante pour une gamme de solutés fluorescents y compris l'isothiocyanate de fluorescéine, 4 et 40 kDa dextranes, la myoglobine, l'insuline et du sulfate de chondroïtine. Certain components of flaxseed are known to exhibit antioxidant activity. The objective of this research was to study the antioxidant activity of flaxseed proteins and protein hydrolysates. Proteins and their hydrolysates were prepared from defatted, non-defatted, and demucilaged flaxseed with and without dialysis, and the antioxidant activities were examined by DPPH scavenging assay, reducing power assay, and metal ion chelating assay. The degree of hydrolysis (DH) of the proteins using bacterial protease was higher than using trypsin. Cette étude examine la faisabilité et l'efficacité de l'intégration d'une concentration sur le contenu/le sujet dans un contexte principalement concentré sur la forme/la langue. Le contexte choisi pour cette étude est une classe de français langue étrangère dans un lycée d'une petite ville rurale du nord-ouest de l'État de New York. Une intervention dans la salle de classe a été conduite avec 27 participants-étudiants et leur professeur de français. Cette intervention mettait en pratique un module (« une situation d'apprentissage et d'évaluation ») en français sur les problèmes environnementaux. This thesis describes the study of phospha-Münchnones, a new class of 1,3-dipole. These 1,3-dipoles have been previously demonstrated to be accessible in a one-pot reaction of imines, acid chlorides and organophosphorus reagents, and participate in 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions. The objective of the research described in this thesis is to both understand the reactivity of these dipoles, and exploit their cycloaddition with alkynes and alkenes to synthesize pyrroles and 2-pyrrolines with high regio-, diastereo- and enantioselectivity. La présente étude de cas multiples a exploré deux facettes: (a) les processus de relations qui existent entre enfants, mentors, et parents qui participent dans un jumelage de mentorat, et (b) les impacts perçus de la participation au jumelage sur les enfants, mentors, et parents. This dissertation sets out to offer a renewed perspective on the participation of Shakespeare's theatre in the secularization of early modern England. It engages with current theories of secularization, in which the pluralization of beliefs is recognized as fuelling secularizing processes, as opposed to longstanding subtraction theories of secularization, which have mistakenly charted a comprehensive decline of belief. While this study acknowledges the historical reality of Shakespeare's involvement in the secularization of the religious landscape of early modernity, it also resists the common reception of his plays as prescient anticipations of much later secularisms. Structural failure due to earthquakes poses a serious threat to the life safety of Canadians. This threat is greater in existing structures than in new structures due to advancements in the understanding of seismology and structural design that have recently been incorporated into the relevant design codes and standards. This thesis documents an evaluation of the seismic vulnerabilities of existing single storey concentrically braced frame steel structures. Focusing on the brace and brace connections, brittle failure of the connection was identified as a key concern. La carbonatation du béton frais effectuée à son plus jeune âge, ainsi que la possibilité de potentiellement intégrer cette technologie dans la production du béton préfabriqué a été analysé dans cette étude. Il a été constaté que l'équilibre de l'humidité relative entre l'intérieur du béton et le milieu ambiant dans lequel il se trouve n'était pas possible à établir au début du processus préalable de la cure du béton frais par carbonatation. An implicit adaptive Nonlinear Frequency Domain method (NLFD) has been developed and validated for the Navier-Stokes equations on deformable grids. Although the computational time for periodic flows is reduced by using the NLFD approach in comparison with classical time marching schemes, the adaptive NLFD approach leads to additional reductions in the overall computational effort. A novel adaptation strategy that allows both mode augmentation and reduction enables the adaptive approach to gain a factor of two reduction in memory and computational cost at anequivalent solution accuracy to the non-adaptive approach. Trypanosomatid pathogens cause devastating diseases in humans and animals and continue to pose a major challenge in the drug development. Mitochondrial gene expression in trypanosomatid pathogens requires extensive post transcriptional modification, known as RNA editing which generates translatable transcripts for essential components of parasite respiratory complex. RNA editing is catalyzed by a multiprotein complex called editosome. Most of the editosome proteins are essential for parasite survival, thereby making editosome a suitable target for drug discovery.
