2013 — An integrated education intervention to improve infant and young child nutrition growth in Ghana
    Résumé

Inappropriate complementary feeding (CF) practices and inadequate nutrient intakes contribute to the high level of malnutrition among children 6-24 months of age in Ghana. In communities where the economy is agricultural-based, interventions aimed at addressing malnutrition among infants and young children may need to focus on both food production and caregivers' nutrition knowledge. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a combined nutrition and agricultural education intervention, delivered through community health workers and agricultural extension agents, to improve infant and young child diet and growth in the Upper Manya Krobo district of Ghana. The current CF …  Lire la suite

2013 — Landscape-scale assessment of soil properties, water quality and related nutrient fluxes under oil palm cultivation: a case study in Sumatra, Indonesia

2013 — The role of the endothelial cell glycocalyx in mechanotransduction of wall shear stress

2013 — Mechanisms of glucocorticoid responsiveness in the lung during development and inflammation

2013 — Motor neuron development in the hypoglossal nucleus

2013 — Seeing double: ironic encounters between art and law
    Résumé

This dissertation is about what happens when the law attempts to control and police the meaning, circulation, and effects of representations. In a series of case studies, I examine encounters between the criminal law and the works of art, literature, and theatre it seeks to regulate and contain, in order to probe what the notion of irony can tell us about the vulnerability of institutionalized power. Each chapter focuses on a particular crime of representation - publishing an obscene text; uttering offensive language in a public place, making and showing indecent or pornographic images; and marking graffiti. In each case, …  Lire la suite

2013 — ORP1L assists in trafficking HIV-1 structural protein and viral genomic RNA
    Résumé

Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1), the etiological agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), exploits host cellular proteins and machinery throughout the viral replication cycle. Details concerning the regulation of the directed trafficking of HIV-1 genomic RNA (vRNA) to sites of assembly remain obscure. Thus far, it is known that the main viral structural protein, Gag, colocalizes with vRNA and transits through the cytoplasm on cholesterol-rich late endosomal membranes. Previous results suggest that HIV-1 commandeers late endosome trafficking to guide viral components to the plasma membrane. Positioning of Gag, vRNA, and late endosomes is exquisitely controlled by dynein motor activity …  Lire la suite

    2013 — Role of «Leishmania donovani» peroxin 14 in glycosomal import machinery
    Résumé

Peroxisomes are organelles found in eukaryotic cells where several oxidative processes take place. Enzymes destined for the peroxisome generally contain either a C-terminal or a N-terminal peroxisomal targeting signal, named PTS1 and PTS2 respectively. These signals are cytosolically recognized by their correspondent receptors PEX5 and PEX7 prior to being recruited at the surface of the peroxisomal membrane where the complex docks onto PEX14. Then, enzymes are transported in a natively folded fashion inside the organelle where they are released. In trypanosomatids, other metabolic pathways, including glycolysis, are also segregated in the organelle, which has been renamed the glycosome to better …  Lire la suite

2013 — The role of FOXP3 in human CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cell phenotype and function
    Résumé

Naturally occurring CD4+CD25High regulatory T cells (nTreg) have emerged as an essential component of self-tolerance. These cells arise in the thymus and represent 1-10% of CD4+ T cells in humans and mice. They constitutively express the FOXP3 transcription factor. The importance of FOXP3 for Treg cell differentiation and function is illustrated by the Immune-dysregulation, Polyendocrinopathy, Enteropathy, X-linked (IPEX) syndrome; a rare and severe systemic autoimmune disorder caused by mutations in the FOXP3 gene. Treg cell defects are suspected to underlie most other human autoimmune diseases. However the characterization of human nTreg cells has been hindered by the failure to discriminate …  Lire la suite

2013 — Processivity domains within human telomerase reverse transcriptase that regulate telomere length and immortalization

This thesis studies the dynamics of decision-making in a repeated auction game used as a basis for designing distributed resource management and task assignment mechanisms. We study the problem of coordinating a group of independent agents in a dynamic environment where individuals make sequential decisions based on their ever-changing knowledge set. We extend the auction-based coordination paradigm presented in previous works to implement long-term desired operational state of the multi-agent system. We model the agent coordination problem as a non-cooperative repeated game and propose its outcome as agents taking strategic actions conditional on their private information, their previous actions, and …  Lire la suite

2013 — Beneficial effects of running exercise on intervertebral disc degeneration and low back pain in mice
    Résumé

Chronic low back pain (LBP) affects over 10% of Canadians and seriously decreases quality of life. The aging intervertebral disc (IVD) is prone to degeneration, frequently contributing to low back pain. Physical activity influences IVD physiology, and animal studies show that cyclic loading increases proteoglycan synthesis in the disc, suggesting a role for running exercise in disc repair. Our laboratory has validated a rodent model of LBP, the aging SPARC-null mouse, which displays axial and radiating pain that parallels LBP in humans and is pharmacologically reversible. We therefore aimed to demonstrate that habitual running exercise will delay disc degeneration and …  Lire la suite

2013 — Identification of candidate Toxoplasma gondii factors that are responsible for the inhibition of interferon gamma mediated up-regulation of major histocompatibility complex class-II
    Résumé

The obligate intracellular pathogen Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most successful pathogens in the world, with an average worldwide infection rate of ~30 % in humans. The ability of the T. gondii to establish persistent infections in immunocompetent hosts is likely due to its immune evasion strategies that include interference with T cell activation, blocking of pro-inflammatory cytokine signaling while stimulating anti-inflammatory signaling and preventing the expression of major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) molecules by immune cells. This blocking the production of MHC-II by professional antigen presenting cells dampens the CD4+ T cell response and delays the onset …  Lire la suite

2013 — Carotid atherosclerotic plaque instability as assessed by texture analysis of ultrasonic images
    Résumé

BACKGROUND: Internal carotid artery stenosis is a major etiological factor causing cerebrovascular events. Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) has been shown to reduce the risk of future cerebrovascular events. It is increasingly recognized that in addition to stenosis, plaque morphology plays an important role in determining plaque stability. The evolution of imaging modalities such as ultrasound and of computer-assisted image analysis has led to the development of objective, reproducible methods to assess plaque morphology. Previous studies have identified differences in plaque morphology between asymptomatic plaques and those causing different cerebrovascular events and between men and women. Moreover, similarities in morphology between plaques …  Lire la suite

Recent studies have identified large scale brain networks based on the spatio-temporal structure of spontaneous fluctuations in resting-state fMRI data. It is expected that functional connectivity based on resting-state data is reflective of- but not identical to the underlying anatomical connectivity. However, which functional connectivity analysis methods reliably predict the network structure remains unclear. Here we tested and compared network connectivity analysis methods by applying them to fMRI resting-state time-series obtained from the human visual cortex. The methods evaluated here are those previously tested against simulated data in Smith et al. (Neuroimage, 2011).To this end, we defined regions within retinotopic …  Lire la suite

2013 — Novel inhibitors of the human Farnesyl Pyrophosphate Synthase
    Résumé

Farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase (FPPS) occupies the first branching point of the mevalonate pathway, an important biosynthetic route that provides essential lipid molecules, such as steroids and isoprenoids, in mammalian cells. The enzyme catalyzes the sequential condensation of dimethylallyl pyrophosphate (DMAPP) with isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP) to produce farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP). This metabolite is required for the post-translational modification of ~2% of the total mammalian proteome and this modification is critical for proper subcellular localization and function of many proteins including the small GTPases, which are essential for cell signalling and proliferation. Currently, nitrogen containing bisphosphonates (N-BPs) are the only class of …  Lire la suite

Articular cartilage demonstrates a very limited capability for self-repair and thus injury, when left unnoticed, often results in further degradation of the tissue. Detection of early stage indicators of injury, such as surface and biochemical changes, is necessary to provide possible treatment which could alter the course of degradation. For this reason, the development of cartilage-specific imaging contrast agents is an active area of research aiming to characterize tissue integrity and composition by minimally invasive means. The development of a technique which highlights surface changes in clinical images of cartilage could provide for sensitive indications of post-traumatic injury. The objective …  Lire la suite

    Résumé

Freezing stress limits crop productivity and generates substantial economic losses every year. While most temperate cereal crops exhibit some degree of cold tolerance, they require exposure to low, non-freezing temperatures in order to acclimate. This involves the induced expression of cold-regulated (COR) genes. COR gene promoters contain sequences that are recognized by C-repeat Binding Factor 1 (CBF1), a transcription factor that may mediate gene expression via the SAGA (SPT-ADA2-GCN5-acetyltransferase) complex in response to cold stress. The goal of this study was to characterize the function of the adaptor protein ADA2, a member of the SAGA complex that may link CBF1 …  Lire la suite

Current technology uses broad spectrum high pressure sodium lamps (HPS), which, despite being excellent luminous sources, are not the most efficient light source for plant production. Specific light frequencies have been shown to impact photosynthesis more directly than others (especially in the red and blue ranges); focusing on specific wavelengths, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) could diminish lighting costs due to their high efficiency and lower operating temperatures. LEDs can be selected to target the wavelengths …  Lire la suite

Six full-scale reinforced concrete deep beams were constructed and tested to investigate the influence of concrete strength on their behaviour. Two levels of uniformly distributed reinforcement steel were tested for three pairs of deep beams with different concrete strengths to determine the influence of the reinforcement ratio on performance. Simple strut-and-tie models, refined strut-and-tie models, and sectional analysis are used to predict the behaviour of the specimens and to verify design approaches. It was found that increased concrete strength resulted in an increase in the ratio of the bearing stress at crushing to the compressive strength of the concrete. An …  Lire la suite
