Soil transmitted helminths (STHs) are gastrointestinal nematodes of humans. Periodic deworming with albendazole (ABZ) and mebendazole (MBZ) is applied to control STHs. However, repeated treatment can cause selection of mutations in the β-tubulin gene at codons 167, 198 and 200 leading to resistance. To maintain an effective control strategy it is crucial to identify resistance, if any, at an early stage. Method: We have developed accurate molecular assays for STHs to detect β-tubulin genetic changes at codons 200, 167 and 198 associated with resistance. Canadian women are twice as likely to be severely obese compared to men, are more likely to be physically inactive, and comprise the majority of patients undergoing bariatric treatment for severe obesity. Physical activity (PA) is one of the strongest predictors of successful long-term weight management and is a recommended adjunct to bariatric surgery. However, patients often do not increase levels of PA following surgery and physical inactivity among severely obese women remains poorly understood. The thesis explores architectural potential and experience in the theatre of Peter Brook (1925-). The importance of his thought, writings and theatrical creation in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries reaches far beyond the question of theatre. It prepares a ground for exploring the ethical and poetic dimensions of architecture. Refusing to reduce the role of theatre to making 'pictures,' Brook's theatre strives to offer us ephemeral experience in space and to engage us with the power of individual and communal imagination. La structure de pointe d'écoulement tourbillonnaire d'une aile delta élancée à 65 ° (DW65) et non élancée à 50 ° (DW50) a été étudiée au nombre de Reynolds de l'ordre 105. Polymerized colloidal crystal arrays (PCCAs) are colloidal crystal arrays that are embedded in a hydrogel matrix. Because they exhibit iridescent colour that can change in response to external stimuli, they have potential to be useful sensing materials. In this research, a new testing platform was synthesized by immobilizing PCCAs on filter paper. This is possible because paper is a porous, hydrophilic, and compliant support. Two methods were developed to optimize these so-called paper-based PCCAs (PB-PCCAs, M. Li, M.Eng. thesis, McGill University). The observational record of the growth of structure in the universe over cosmic time offers a unique and invaluable cosmological measure. The abundance and evolutionary history of structure in the universe are dependent upon the parameters which define the cosmological framework. In this work, we formulate a method for deriving cosmological constraints from the observed abundance of galaxy clusters. These objects are the most massive gravitationally collapsed structures in the universe and act as tracers of the underlying density field. This thesis deconstructs some of the discourse surrounding post-9/11 terrorism detention regimes. In the crisis atmosphere that immediately followed the 9/11 attacks, a number of baseline presumptions quickly emerged and appear to have been accepted as foundational bases for various forms of extraordinary detention practices. This phenomenon played out differently in various places, but many of these practices had commonalities in terms of the foundations on which they were established. Over time, many of these presumptions have solidified, and they have now gained acceptance as familiar. L'intérêt pour la recherche de cordes cosmiques c'est récemment renouvelé avec l'arrivée de nouvelles technologies permettant d'étudier la cosmologie avec grande précision. Dans cette thèse, nous discutons de la possibilité d'observer ces cordes cosmiques par leur effet sur les structures à grande échelle de l'univers. Ce travail propose comme explication à l'asymétrie avant-arrière, anormalement large, observée au Tevatron, le processus de production de quark top par échange de squark bottom qui s'inscrit dans le Modèle Standard Supersymétrique Minimal, avec violation de R-parité. Les resultats démontrent une bonne concordance entre les données d'asymétrie du quark top, tout en restant en accord avec la section efficace totale de production et la section efficace differentielle. Le but de cette thèse est d'étudier les propriétés de conversion ascendante des nanomatériaux NaYF<sub>4</sub>:Yb, Er et d'optimiser leur intégration dans des cellules à pigment photosensible (DSSC), une nouvelle technologie photovoltaïque prometteuse. NaYF<sub>4</sub>:Yb, Er convertit la lumière infrarouge, qui normalement n'est pas absorbée par les DSSCs, en lumière visible, donc elle a le potentiel d'augmenter l'efficacité des cellules solaires. Angiogenesis and inflammation are hallmarks of several pathologies including breast cancer. The angiopoietins and Tie receptors have emerge as alternative targets for therapeutical intervention due to their function as essential regulators of angiogenesis, vascular homeostasis and inflammation. Angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1), the main agonist of Tie-2 receptors, promotes vessel growth, inhibits inflammation and maintains vessel stability. Although important advances have been made in understanding the functions of Ang-1 in the vasculature the intracellular signaling pathways activated by Ang-1, as well as its role in breast cancer and inflammation, remain largely unexplored. Cancer cell metabolism is often characterized by a shift from an oxidative to a glycolytic bioenergetic pathway, a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect. miR-378* is embedded within PPARGC1b which encodes PGC-1beta, a transcriptional regulator of oxidative energy metabolism. We show that miR-378* acts as a molecular switch involved in the orchestration of the Warburg effect in breast cancer cells via interference with the PGC-1beta/ERRgamma bioenergetics transcriptional pathway. Moreover, we identify that the expression of miR-378* is regulated by the breast cancer oncogene ERBB2, and that its expression in human breast cancer correlates with disease progression. Static and dynamic carbonation curing at early age was developed for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and Portland limestone cement (PLC) concrete masonry units (CMU) production. It is intended to replace conventional steam curing, improve the CMU performance, reduce energy consumption, and permanently sequester carbon dioxide in concrete. Concrete slabs representing the face shell of a 20-cm CMU as well as full sized CMU were used throughout the carbonation process. Many parts of the world, and especially developing countries, are experiencing severe water shortage problems. This is causing increased use of untreated or partially-treated wastewater for irrigation. Consequently, many pollutants such as surfactants, present in wastewaters, could influence fate and transport of agricultural chemicals in soils. Therefore, a field lysimeter study was undertaken to investigate the effect of non-ionic surfactant, Brij 35, on the fate and transport of two commonly used antibiotics, oxytetracycline (OTC) and monensin (MON), and an herbicide, metribuzin. Little is known empirically about parental perceptions of their young child's understanding of death, or how this perception relates to how parents talk about death with their children (Siegel, Mesagno, & Christ, 1990). The aim of the current study was to explore parental perceptions of their child's (N = 57; n males = 29, 3-8 years) understanding of death, how they talk about death with their children, and what their children actually understand about death. The Théâtre du Jorat was founded in 1908 by the playwright René Morax, in Mézières, a small village in the Swiss countryside. Influenced by Romain Rolland and Maurice Pottecher's populist theatrical enterprises, Morax created a people's theatre that the local inhabitants could not only identify with but also be involved with by actively participating in the various theatrical projects he produced. Morax's interest in music and his homeland's choral tradition led him to incorporate music into his theatrical concept. Cette thèse examine la représentation des animaux dans la poésie moderniste du Canada et des États-Unis. En étudiant la relation entre la prolifération des tropes et d'imagerie animale et la poésie expérimentale, je soutiens que le modernisme est fondamentalement préoccupé par la reconsidération de la nature de l'être humain et sa place dans le monde moderne. There is tremendous variation in how people orient toward their goal pursuits and these differences have traditionally been treated as stable traits. However, research in the related field of goal pursuit has demonstrated that the physical or merely symbolic presence of relationship partners can greatly influence which goals people are interested in pursuing. My coauthors and I tested and ultimately found support for the hypothesis that the social context would be similarly active in shaping how people approach their goals, that is, in shaping their motivational orientations. During the Arab Spring effected governments in the Middle East Northern Africa sought to jam satellite transmissions from news agencies carrying news and information of the uprisings into their respective territories. The news agencies pushed back and in addition jumping satellites and changing signals, some of these agencies reported that such jamming was a violation of international law.
