2018 — Benefication of rare earth minerals from Niobec ore: Froth flotation

2018 — Envisioning new futures: Portrait photographs of black Victorians in Montreal, 1861-1901

2018 — Development, delivery, and assessment of a humanistic coaching workshop and its impact on youth development

2018 — Isolation of rhizobacteria in Southwestern Québec, Canada: An investigation of their impact on the growth and salinity stress alleviation in Arabidopsis thaliana and crop plants

2018 — Systematic study of microRNAs in within-species and cross-species interactions
    Résumé

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that play important roles in post-transcriptional gene regulation in eukaryotic cells. They target mRNAs to suppress gene expression by inhibition of translation or promotion of mRNA decay. miRNAs have emerged as key gene regulators in diverse biological pathways, with over half of the human transcriptome predicted to be under miRNA regulation. In conjunction with other post-transcriptional control pathways, the majority of the gene expression cascade can be under direct or indirect miRNA regulation. Given this far-reaching role, it is not surprising that disruption of miRNA functions can contribute to many human diseases. Both computational …

2018 — Phosphorylation of αNAC by DNA-PKcs in osteoblast differentiation
    Résumé

In the nucleus of mesenchymal cells, the alpha chain of the nascent polypeptide-associated complex (αNAC) functions as a transcriptional coregulator that either activates or represses gene expression depending on cellular context and cell type. αNAC phosphorylation at serine 132 induces its sumoylation at nearby lysine residue 127 which favors its interaction with corepressors and inhibition of target gene expression. Here we show that DNA-dependent protein kinase, catalytic subunit (DNA-PKcs, encoded by the Prkdc [Protein Kinase, DNA-Activated, Catalytic Polypeptide] gene) phosphorylates αNAC at residue serine 132. Pharmacological inhibition of DNA-PKcs activity or specific deletion of Prkdc in osteoblast cells induces the …  Lire la suite

2018 — Augmenting the rule of law: the changing conception of "Rule of Law" in the law and development paradigm

    2018 — Investigating CFTR protein-protein interactions utilizing Bio-ID.

2018 — Proofs and programs about open terms
    Résumé

Formal deductive systems are very common in computer science. They are used to represent logics, programming languages, and security systems. Moreover, writing programs that manipulate them and that reason about them is important and common. Consider proof assistants, language interpreters, compilers and other software that process input described by formal systems. This thesis shows that contextual types can be used to build tools for convenient implementation and reasoning about deductive systems with binders. We discuss three aspects of this: the reconstruction of implicit parameters that makes writing proofs and programs with dependent types easier, the addition of contextual objects to …

2018 — Mechanisms of drug resistance to ROS1 inhibition in non-small cell lung cancer
    Résumé

Non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) account for ~85% of lung cancers, which are the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, and consist of different subtypes driven by distinct oncogenic mutations. Selective inhibitors targeting several driver receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) in NSCLC subtypes, such as those harboring activating EGFR mutations or ALK rearrangements, have led to dramatic initial responses. More recently, ROS1-translocated NSCLCs is approved to be treated with crizotinib, an inhibitor initially approved to target ALK but can also inhibit ROS1 due to the structural similarity of ROS1 and ALK RTKs. However, resistance to crizotinib inevitably arises limiting its clinical …  Lire la suite

2018 — Patterning and development of the amniote limb during pre-cartilagenous condensation
    Résumé

The amniote limb begins as a bump on the side of the early embryo, and undergoes a well-studied process dictating its growth and establishing the anatomical axes. After the initial outgrowth, the limb forms the nascent structures of the mature organism. The first of these structures to develop are the pre-cartilagenous condensations that arise among its undifferentiated neighbors. My thesis discusses and investigates the nature of the limb at this stage of early skeletal patterning. The first chapter begins with a thorough description of the tissues involved: undifferentiated mesenchyme, condensation, and cartilage. The second chapter considers the gene expression of …  Lire la suite

In this dissertation I present the results of comparative ethnographic and spatial research carried out in Alma and Saint-Georges, Québec between August 2015 and July 2016. I chose these cities as field sites in order to study why two populations of nearly equal size (roughly thirty thousand) and extremely similar demographic, economic and social characteristics voted differently since 1976 on the two most salient political cleavages in Québec – the left-right spectrum on economic issues and the question of provincial sovereignty. In the dissertation, I argue three main points. First, the political differences expressed in the voting histories of Alma …  Lire la suite

Schizophrenia (SCZ) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are psychiatric diseases with complex inheritance. Genetic studies have not identified susceptibility genes to adequately explain the heritability and the etiology of these diseases is largely unknown. We identified susceptibility genes enriched for de novo mutations (DNMs) in at least two independent whole exome sequencing (WES) publications. Genes associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC) were used as control genes. We selected for rare inherited and DNMs in the ASD network using a WES dataset (2392 ASD families) and in the SCZ network using three independent WES datasets (35 trios; 598 trios; 5090 case controls). 2018 — On the processing of second-order information in normal and amblyopic vision
    Résumé

Natural scenes are composed of first-order and second-order information. First-order information is defined by variations in luminance or chromaticity, while second-order information is defined by variations in properties other than luminance or color, such as contrast, texture or motion. This thesis investigates the processing of second-order information in normal and amblyopic visual systems. Amblyopia is a neuro-developmental disorder of human vision. Processing nonlinearities are relevant to both first- and second-order visual mechanisms and are an important feature for any sensory system. In the current thesis, second-order processing nonlinearities were investigated using a pedestal masking paradigm and were modeled with a …  Lire la suite

2018 — Elucidating the effects of miR-17˜92 on the metabolic program of B-cell lymphoma
    Résumé

Dysregulation of microRNAs is commonly observed in cancer cells. The polycistronic microRNA cluster, miR-17~92, is a known oncogene. Elevated expression of this miRNA cluster correlates with tumor aggressiveness in Eµ-Myc lymphomas. Our lab has identified Stk11 (which encodes the tumour suppressor gene LKB1) as a target of the miR-17 seed family that alters the metabolism of lymphoma cells. However, the mechanism by which the entire miR-17~92 cluster promotes cancer has yet to be fully elucidated. We hypothesized that miR-17~92 can promote cancer by altering the metabolism of tumour cells by modulating LKB1-mediated suppression of mTOR signaling. To test this hypothesis, …  Lire la suite

Our visual system is sensitive to boundaries defined by differences in cues such as luminance (first-order cue), as well as texture, contrast, or motion (second-order cues). Gradients in these cues can be utilized to perform tasks such as figure-ground segregation and 3D shape perception. A significant fraction of neurons in the early visual cortex of cats and monkeys have been shown to be selective to both first- and second-order boundaries. These neurons are thought to be the neural correlate for perceptual encoding of such boundaries. They are selective for the same boundary orientation irrespective of the cue (first- or second-order) …  Lire la suite
