2018 — Translation visualization in real-time in HEK293T cells and dissociated hippocampal neuronsRésumé

2018 — Effect of rapid correction of vitamin D insufficiency on bone health in breastfed infants born with low vitamin D stores: A randomized, double-blind trial in Montreal, CanadaRésumé
Many Canadian infants are born with an insufficient vitamin D status. Maintaining a low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration of less than 50 nmol/L during infancy could have negative impacts on bone health. In order to support a sufficient 25(OH)D concentration, Health Canada currently recommends that all breastfed infants receive a vitamin D supplement of 400 international units per day (IU/d). It has been shown that higher doses of vitamin D allow for a more rapid increase in 25(OH)D which could benefit those born with insufficient status. However, the lack of evidence in this population limits the development of new … Lire la suite

2018 — Toward «Erematare», Beyond Conservation: Meaning, practice, and rethinking the conservation story in the Maasai communities of Olkiramatian and Shompole, Kajiado County, KenyaRésumé

2018 — Impact of nutrition in frail older adults undergoing invasive cardiac proceduresRésumé

2018 — Manga and education: A study of «Gakuen Manga»Résumé
The purpose of this study is to inquire into the relation between manga and education. It centres on gakuen manga, a genre of manga whose protagonists are actively teachers or students. Particularly important to this inquiry is the surge of gakuen manga from the late 1970s, which occurred in conjunction with the implementation of new educational policies in response to widespread concern about the socialization of youth in Japan. This study thus addresses the emergence and transformation of the gakuen genre as well as the key debates and historical transformations in the Japanese education system, such as the tsumekomi or … Lire la suite

2018 — Gram-negative bacterial infection increases lung cancer metastasis via Toll-like receptor activation and increased cancer cell proliferationRésumé

2018 — Structural study of the acid sphingomyelinase protein familyRésumé

2018 — Compete or complete: a contextualist approach on prophetic medicineRésumé
Prophetic Medicine (Ṭibb al-nabawī) is an Islamic genre of religious medical literature that mostly developed in Damascus between the 11th to 14th centuries. It is a type of medical writings that gradually incorporated Greco-Islamic medical theory into ḥadīth (i.e. reports from the Prophet) compilations that focus on medicine. While modern scholarship have focused on the question of the relationship between this genre and the medical science inherited from the Greeks, this thesis argues that Prophetic Medicine should be put back in its context and understood in its authors own terms. The issue of whether it was an attempt to compete … Lire la suite

2018 — Comparative functional responses of crayfishes: variation across species and populationsRésumé
Managers require effective methods for forecasting the impacts of introduced species, so that invasion threats can be prioritized. An emerging tool for invasive species risk assessment is the systematic comparison of the functional response (the relationship between predation rate and prey density) of native and invasive species. This approach is based on the assumption that species that have higher resource consumption rates will be more disruptive to food webs. Here, I use functional response analysis to examine the influence of biotic interactions on per capita effects of two congeneric North American crayfishes (Orconectes limosus and O. virilis) that have extensive … Lire la suite

2018 — Metabolic adaptation and its role in tumorigenesisRésumé
The study of cancer metabolism has gained in appreciation and development over the decades since the original discoveries of Otto Warburg. "The Warburg Effect", named after the discoverer, described a unique set of metabolic features of tumours where glucose was preferentially fermented to lactate despite abundant oxygen in the environment. This was in contrast to the metabolic phenotype of normal, non-transformed tissue, where glucose is oxidized to CO2 in the mitochondria. This lead Warburg to the hypothesis that cancer cells originate due to dysfunctional mitochondria. Since that observation, progress in the field of oncometabolism remained relatively slow. By contrast, genetic … Lire la suite

2018 — The direct imaging search for Earth 2.0Résumé
Direct imaging is the next-generation technique of exoplanet science. It is likely the best way to characterize the atmospheres of Earth-size exoplanets in the habitable zones of Sun-like stars. Future space missions such as LUVOIR and HabEx are designed to find these Earth twin planets, but the cardinal purpose is to characterize them, and a search using direct imaging is not necessarily the fastest way. Given a pale white dot at the right projected separation and brightness to be an Earth twin, what are the odds that it is, in fact, an Earth twin? We show that the planetary false … Lire la suite

2018 — The role of the locus coeruleus-noradrenergic system in resilience to foot-shock stressRésumé
Title: The role of the locus coeruleus-noradrenergic system in resilience to foot-shock stress. Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is caused by exposure to extreme traumatic stress and is characterised by intrusive fear-related memories, hyper-arousal and avoidance. Most individuals exposed to traumatic stress do not develop PTSD and are considered resilient. Women are twice more likely to develop the disorder. Researchers have placed intense interest in understanding the neural basis of resilience to trauma-type stress. It is believed that the locus coeruleus-noradrenergic (LC-NA) system plays a modulatory role in resilience to trauma-type stress and may underlie gender differences in resilience. Methods: We … Lire la suite

2018 — Safety and immunology of repeated intravenous injections of poly[hemoglobin-catalase-superoxide dismutase-carbonic anhydrase] using enzymes from a novel extraction methodRésumé
This thesis answers the following two questions: 1) better source of enzymes to cut-down the cost for preparation of polyHb-SOD-CAT-CA; 2) long-term safety and immune responses to the polyHb-SOD-CAT-CA in vivo. A new enzyme extraction method has been established to lower the cost of producing polyHb-CAT-SOD-CA. It facilitates the large-scale production for the clinic use in the future. The long-term investigations of different sourced blood substitutes suggest there is no safety problems and adverse immune responses were detected in rats after 4-weekly IV injection or after 30% blood volume exchange transfusion. The design of crosslinking homologous hemoglobin and heterologous enzymes … Lire la suite

2018 — Machine learning for learning human Hi-C dataRésumé
The 3D organization of the human genome remains an important and unsolved problem in biology. Current advances in quantifying and visualizing this organization through Chromosome Conformation Capture techniques (Hi-C/3C/4C/5C) have generated massive amounts of biological data that may provide a wealth of information. Much of these data, however, are often sparse and dependent on experimental biases. In this thesis, we analyze several machine models when applied to raw Hi-C data. We primarily explore how machine learning approaches can be used to improve the data sparsity. In addition, we examine biological signals that these machine models extract from the underlying data … Lire la suite

2018 — State responsibility for non-state actors in times of war: Article VI of the Outer Space Treaty and the law of neutralityRésumé
The explosion of non-State actors in outer space has come with enormous corporate and inter-State complexity. Instead of a private US-based company sending a single satellite into orbit, multi-national corporations have plans to send thousands. In-orbit satellites are being bought and sold by companies incorporated in different States. Foreign military departments are putting communications payloads on non-State actor satellites. This thesis looks at the implications of these non-State actors in space performing actions that could affect the neutrality of their licensing State. Article VI of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty attributes all actions of non-State actors in Space to the … Lire la suite

2018 — Charge state dynamics during excitation and depletion of the nitrogen vacancy center in DiamondRésumé
The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect center in diamond shows great promise for many applications in quantum information processing and precision sensing. The NV center naturally occurs in two different charge states (NV0 and NV-), which have very different optical and spin properties. Understanding laser-induced switching between these charge states is essential for taking advantage of the NV center's properties in many contexts. Reducing the amount of optically-induced ionization is often important for increasing SNR and spin-coherence times. On the other hand charge state switching can be taken advantage of through spin-to-charge conversion techniques, enhancing optical spin-state readout of the NV center … Lire la suite

2018 — The role of interleukin-17a on airway epithelial cellsRésumé
Severe neutrophilic asthma remains a relevant clinical problem with no alternative treatment as corticosteroids fail to alleviate symptoms. Severe neutrophilic asthma patients are characterized by high levels of Interleukin (IL)-17a, a modulator of inflammation, and IL-8, a major neutrophil chemoattractant. With inconsistent data relating to the role of IL-17a in inflammation, some studies describe it as a stimulator, others as a potentiator. In addition, the contribution of IL-17a to corticosteroid-insensitivity remains unclear. This study focused on better understanding the role of IL-17a. Using airway epithelial cells as a model, experiments were carried out in the BEAS-2B cell line then key … Lire la suite

2018 — Giacomo Puccini's Gianni Schicchi: Reinventing Dante for social criticismRésumé
Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, a one-act opera forming part of his trilogy called Il Trittico, received its world premiere in New York on December 14, 1918. Schicchi is a character that Dante Alighieri, approximately six hundred years earlier, condemned to Hell in his Commedia, more precisely in Canto XXX of the Inferno, for having impersonated the deceased Buoso Donati and successfully falsified the latter’s will. Surprisingly, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi is a comedy with a happy ending and the impersonator Schicchi, one of Dante’s worst sinners, becomes a hero. Why did Puccini, known to be a cosmopolitan xenophile, choose Dante at … Lire la suite

2018 — Structural insight into dimodular nonribosomal peptide synthetases and their formylation tailoring domainRésumé
Nonribosomal peptide synthesases (NRPSs) are multimodular megaenzymes that synthesize natural products with different therapeutic uses. They are arranged as an assembly line of modules where every module is responsible for incorporating one specific monomer substrate into the final nonribosomal peptide (NRP). The three core domains of NRPSs are the adenylation (A) domain, which binds and activates the substrate, the peptidyl carrier protein (PCP) which transfers monomer substrates to the condensation (C) domain where they get incorporated into the growing peptide. Structural studies of NRPS domains and modules have helped piece together the groundwork to understanding and visualizing the catalytic cycle … Lire la suite

2018 — Exploring the folding and assembly of nucleic acids by thermal denaturationRésumé

2018 — Modular transformation of the TT-deformed conformal field theoryRésumé
This thesis explores the consequences of modular transformations on a TT̅-deformed two-dimensional conformal field theory defined on a torus geometry, where TT̅ denotes the negative determinant of the stress-energy tensor of the theory. The investigation resulted in the observation that the coupling of the TT̅-deformation transforms as a modular form under a modular transformation of the theory on the torus. This can be derived from either the modular invariance of the partition function and the energy spectrum of the theory, or from the variation of the partition function with the coupling of the TT̅-deformation. The significance of this deformation lies … Lire la suite

2018 — The effects of sensory noise on the perception of multi-element motion stimuliRésumé
Visual neurons are known to exhibit a significant degree of variability in their response to the same visual input. From the perspective of the experimenter, "noise" refers to any intrinsic source of neural and behavioural variability. Noise in visual neurons is an important contributor of trial-to-trial variability in the behavioural response. Studies in non-human primates have often associated intrinsic noise with significant impairments in perceptual judgment. In this thesis, I explore the underlying neural mechanisms behind multi-element motion perception, in the presence of intrinsic ("noise") and extrinsic (stimulus-driven) correlations. We look at the timecourse of correlated activity in MT neurons, … Lire la suite

2018 — Building with IQ (Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit): The rise of a hybrid design tradition in Canada's Eastern ArcticRésumé
Since World War II, the Canadian government has encouraged Inuit, a semi-nomadic hunter society, to settle in structured villages to access essential services such as housing. However, Inuit were never consulted on the design, size, or location of their government-owned accommodations. The result has been housing ill-suited to Arctic conditions and lifestyles, neglectful of cultural traditions. ᑕᐃᒪᙵᓂᑦ ᐅᓇᑕᕕᔾᔪᐊᕐᓂᖅᑕᖃᓚᐅᖅᑐᓂᒃ ᐊᐃᒃᐸᐱᔭᖓᓂᒃ, ᑲᓇᑕᐅᑉ ᒐᕙᒪᒃᑯᖏᑦ ᑲᔪᙱᖅᓴᐃᓯᒪᕗᑦ ᐃᓄᖕᓂᑦ, ᓄᓇᓕᕋᓛᒥᐅᑕᒃᓴᔭᑦ−ᐆᒪᔪᕋᓱᑦᑏᑦ ᐃᓂᖓᓂᒥᐅᑕᓂᑦ, ᓅᑎᑦᑎᓗᑏᑦ ᓄᓇᓕᕋᓛᓄᑦ ᑲᑎᙵᑎᑦᑎᔪᓂᑦ ᐱᔨᑦᑎᖅᑕᐅᓂᒃᑯᓪᓗ ᐊᑐᐃᓐᓇᐅᕕᖃᖅᑐᓂᑦ ᓱᕐᓗᖃᐃ ᐃᒡᓗᓕᕆᓂᖅ. ᑕᐃᒫᖑᒐᓗᐊᖅᑐᓪᓗᒍᒃ, ᐃᓄᐃᑦ ᐅᖃᖃᑎᒋᔭᐅᓚᐅᖅᓯᒪᖏᑐᑦ ᖃᓄᐃᑦᑑᓂᖏᓅᖓᔪᓂᑦ, ᐊᖏᓂᕆᔭᖏᓐᓅᖓᔪᓂᑦ, ᐅᕙᓘᓐᓃᑦ ᓇᒦᓐᓂᕆᔭᖏᓅᖓᔪᓂᑦ ᒐᕙᒪᒃᑯᓄᑦ−ᓇᖕᒥᓂᕆᔭᐅᔪᓄᑦ ᐃᓂᒋᔭᐅᖃᑦᑕᖅᑑᔪᓂᑦ. ᑕᐃᒫᖑᓕᕐᓂᖓ ᐃᒡᓗᓕᕆᓂᒃᑯᑦ ᐊᖅᑮᐅᒪᑎᑦᑎᖏᑐᖅ ᐅᑭᐅᖅᑕᑐᒧᒃ ᒪᓕᒃᓯᒪᓇᑏᓪᓗ ᐊᒻᒪᓗ ᐃᓅᔾᔪᑎᒋᓇᓱᐊᖅᑐᒋᑦ, ᐱᖅᑯᓯᑐᖃᖅᒥᒃ ᑕᐃᒫᑐᐃᓐᓇᖅᑕᐅᖁᔩᓯᒪᓂᕐᒥᒃ ᐃᓕᖅᑯᓯᖓᒍᑦ ᑕᐃᒫᖑᕕᐅᖅᑰᔨᓯᒪᕗᑦ.
