2024 — Are innovative regions more unequal? A case study of Canadian regions, 1981-2016Résumé
Since the 1980s, Canada, like many other OECD countries, has experienced a significant increase in income inequality. Persistent growth in disparities between the wealthy few and the rest has led to concerns over growing resentment and populist discontent. In this fraught era, understanding the drivers of growing inequality is more critical than ever. One such proposed driver, gaining increasing traction in the literature, has been innovation. Long touted as the key to economic growth, recent scholarly discussion has turned a critical eye to innovation-driven growth, highlighting the ways in which technological changes can displace or devalue certain workers whilst rewarding … Lire la suite

2024 — Investigating the role of RNA polymerase condensates in Escherichia coli’s growth and acclimationRésumé
RNA polymerase (RNAP) in Escherichia coli has been observed to form liquid clusters, known as RNAP condensates, particularly in fast-growing conditions. These condensates exhibit high dynamism, rapidly forming and dissolving in response to environmental cues. The intriguing question arises: could the presence of RNAP condensates in cells be linked to bacterial growth and/or their ability to acclimate to new environmental conditions? In this thesis, I aim to answer this question experimentally. In fast-growing conditions, when RNAP condensates form, ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) are the most highly expressed genes. rRNA serves as a precursor to ribosomes which are responsible for protein synthesis. … Lire la suite

2024 — Laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing of molybdenum and titanium-zirconium-molybdenum alloyRésumé

2024 — Geometric Deep Learning for Electrostatics and Magnetostatics ProblemsRésumé
Conventional numerical methods such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) and Finite Difference Method (FDM) have been employed to solve electrostatics and magnetostatics problems involving Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). With the recent boom in deep learning, alternative ways to solve such PDEs subject to boundary value constraints have been proposed and implemented, in contrast to classical numerical solvers. One such entity is a Graph Neural Network (GNN), which precisely depicts the internodal connectivity in a graph structure comprising nodes and edges. At the structural level, a GNN is analogous to the tessellations (here, triangular simplices) of a finite element mesh. … Lire la suite

2024 — Predictive models and biomarkers for early stage and oligometastatic non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy, using machine learningRésumé

2024 — Afghan school principals' leadership practices: Evolving roles that shape schoolteachers’ instructional approaches and achieve students’ learning outcomeRésumé
Currently, Afghan school principals are in the vulnerable situation of not being fully capable of responding to a complex school context. This is because there is no program of studies at the university level to prepare them for this position even though school principals have a significant leadership role. They must hold the entire school community accountable for the provision of access to quality education while providing direct support to assistant principals, head teachers, and teachers to achieve the desired learning outcomes for their students. In this study, I considered the evolution of Afghan school principals’ leadership practices in relation … Lire la suite

2024 — Mussel-Inspired Metallo-Supramolecular polymeric hydrogelsRésumé
Natural biopolymeric systems serve as a significant source of inspiration for scientists and engineers seeking to create innovative high-performance materials for various applications. For example, mussels can adhere strongly to diverse types of surfaces via the byssus, a collection of tough and flexible collagenous fibers. Previous studies highlighted the role of metal coordination in the reinforcement of their protein-based byssal threads. This reinforcement is pivotal for mussels to securely attach to rocky seashores and withstand the challenges of high intertidal zones owing to the exceptional toughness and self-healing capabilities of these fibers. Taking inspiration from this system, metal coordination-based crosslinks … Lire la suite

2024 — The persistence of caste power: the Panchayats of north IndiaRésumé

Cold spray (CS) has recently emerged as a promising technology for various applications, including coatings, additive manufacturing, and field repairs. However, a key challenge in cold spraying is the accurate simulation of the deposition process. Despite numerous numerical studies, many have overlooked the importance of interfacial adhesion and the influence of native oxide films on sprayed particles. To address these challenges, the present thesis proposes a novel numerical method based on peridynamics (PD). By incorporating interfacial interactions and oxide damage, this method aims to provide a more realistic representation of particle impacts and bonding in CS. This thesis work started … Lire la suite

The lung is the primary target of many lethal respiratory viruses, causing significant global mortality. Lung organoid models are potentially helpful for studying emerging or re-emerging viral infections and fostering the development of novel in-vitro therapeutic strategies. But existing models have so far failed to accurately mimic the heterogeneity, cellular diversity and intricate tubular and branching structures of native lungs. Most current models include only cells markers from one single lung region, often primary cells harvested from invasive deep lung tissue biopsies. The present study was aimed at the creation of a heterogeneous lung organoid model from more readily accessible … Lire la suite

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women; 1 in 8 women are expected to develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer is grouped into four distinct types, which informs treatment strategies and patient outcomes. Indeed, some of these breast tumor types are more likely to develop therapeutic resistance, leading to relapse for these women. Moreover, regardless of tumor type, treatments are rarely curative for women who are diagnosed with breast cancers at an advanced stage, including metastatic disease. For these reasons, identifying therapies that target essential vulnerabilities is necessary for improving survival outcomes of women with … Lire la suite

2024 — Adolescent fragility: consequences of social defeat stress on the maturing mesocorticolimbic dopamine system in male and female miceRésumé

2024 — Confession, Credibility, and Epistemic Injustice in the UK Asylum RegimeRésumé
The ‘bogus’ asylum seeker is an evocative figure in the UK political psyche, that both embodies the threat of illegal migration, and substantiates the necessity of immigration control policies aimed at deterrence. Fundamental to the political and social resonance of this figure is the notion that they are lying, making them antagonistic not just to the integrity of national borders, but to the fairness of the institution of asylum. Running parallel to this concept is the increasing illegalization of asylum in immigration policy, meaning that the ‘bogus’ asylum seeker is both revealed and reified by their illegality. However, as is … Lire la suite

2024 — Quebec Hydroelectricity Export Restrictions: Compliance vis-à-vis Article XX GATTRésumé
Quebec’s ambition is to become the “battery” of Northeast America, positioning itself as the leading supplier of clean energy through increased hydroelectricity exports. This ambition, however, is challenged on many fronts. Quebec’s ability to meet both domestic and export demand is empeded by competing federal objectives, such as extending Hydro-Quebec’s grid towards other domestic provinces, and concerns about water resource sufficiency. In this context, I examine in this thesis whether Canadian authorities can restrict hydroelectricity exports to prioritize domestic supply in accordance with international trade law, specifically under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994. By analyzing Article … Lire la suite

2024 — The role of Sidekicks in the assembly of the mouse early visual systemRésumé
How neurons wire together to form circuits is a central pillar of our mental abilities and often leads to disease when gone awry. This fact highlights the importance of neurons correctly finding their synaptic targets after growing their axon in a target area. This is called synaptic specificity and is among the most challenging feats developing neurons face: within a dense thicket of dendrites, a neuron must find a specific target among hundreds of potential candidates. How do these cells meet this challenge? One idea is that they express molecular cues on their cell surface that recognize targets bearing matching cues, … Lire la suite

Tritryps diseases, including Human African Trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease, and Leishmaniasis, are debilitating infections caused by kinetoplastids that threaten the lives of millions of people and livestock. In these microorganisms, mitochondrial transcripts undergo a unique uridine insertion/deletion RNA modification to become translatable and functional. This RNA editing pathway is mediated by a multiprotein complex known as the “editosome”, which has features that underpin its suitability as a validated drug target, such as its essentiality for the parasite’s viability, absence in the host organism, multiple enzymes constitution, and conservation among disease-causing kinetoplastids. Unfortunately, no enzyme-specific inhibitor has been found within the entire … Lire la suite

2024 — Re-Storying, truth-telling and response-abilities: An autoethnographic genre analysis on Gladue reporting, methodologies, and settler accountability within the colonial legal systemRésumé
Gladue reporting was introduced by the Canadian judiciary over twenty years ago as a response to the overcriminalization and incarceration of Indigenous people. Gladue reports are a form of pre-sentencing reports that provide contextualized backgrounds of Indigenous offenders, emphasizing the ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic factors that may have contributed to their involvement with the criminal justice system. The responsibility of Gladue writers in the Gladue reporting process is significant; the translation of a client’s story into this legal (and inherently colonial) document can influence judicial decisions and the course of a person’s life. Despite the significant role … Lire la suite
