The thesis argues that the local remedies rule as applied by the African Commission in the Niger Delta cases in a flexible manner which focused on the Respondent State's obligation to provide effective legal redress rather than the mechanical act of exhaustion of local remedies by the petitioner, represents a correct application of the rule in human rights protection and that the African Commission's pronouncements regarding the absence of effective domestic legal remedies in Nigeria facilitated improvements in Nigeria's legal institutions. This thesis focusses on the seizure-promoting effects of second messengers, in particular calcium and others activated by calcium in CA1 subfield of rat hippocampus in situ and in vitro. Interictal discharges were simulated in hippocampal slices using the low Ca$ sp{2+}$ model where synaptic transmission is blocked. The antiepileptic drug valproic acid (VPA), which is postulated to potentiate GABAergic responses, reduced the low Ca$ sp{2+}$ field bursts, thereby suggesting a non-synaptic mechanism of action of VPA. The primary object of this investigation was to study further the movement of labelled noradrenaline in the isolated perfused rabbit heart, with special reference to its significance in cardiac drug action. Since the movment (uptake and outflow) of noradrenaline might be influenced by changes in heart functions, e.g. coronary flow, heart rate and cardiac contractility, attempts were made to cerrelate movement of noradrenaline with changes in these functions. The main goal of this dissertation is to explore the hypothesis that persistent sodium currents may mediate epileptogenicity within the entorhinal cortex. The thesis attempts to answer three major questions: First, it asks whether persistent sodium currents regulate intrinsic excitability of entorhinal cortical layer V, which has been demonstrated to exhibit epileptogenic characteristics. Second, it asks whether persistent sodium currents may be up-regulated in an acquired temporal lobe epilepsy rodent model (lithium-pilocarpine), whose features strongly correlate with human temporal lobe epilepsy. Some models of solidification are developed by treating the solid in a more realistic manner than that has been done to date. In order to further investigate the polymorphous dendritic growth, a recent phase-field model of dendritic growth due to Kobayashi [93] is modified by introducing a vectorial order parameter. This new model allows for the existence of grain boundaries and is used to study the amorphization of polycrystalline material as well as the growth of many dendrites of different orientations. Clinical chemistry is a medical discipline whose aim is to diagnose and assess disease by analysis of biological specimens. Modem laboratories can perform several hundred different tests using many different methods developed over the last century. The classical, more traditional assays are typically labour-intensive, not multiplexed (only measure one analyte or disorder per assay), expensive, require a long turnaround time, and may not provide adequate sensitivity and specificity. Our intended topic is a general discussion of the basic elements of liability related to airline accidents to which fully automated cockpits have constituted an associated contributory factor. In addition we addressed the liability of air carriers arising from injuries or death caused to passengers traveling on international flights. This thesis uses multiscale computational modeling, scaling and analysis to characterize the steps of a multistage process used to produce a defect-free cholesteric collagen film and to characterize the resulting chiral biological plywood microstructure, found throughout Nature. The process makes use of a complex flow deposition of a liquid film of a dilute collagen solution on a substrate which is later converted to a chiral biological plywood by exposure to an airflow of filtered air. A melt extraction process with a new approach to making ceramic fibers was used to produce amorphous fibers in the Y2O3-Al 2O3 system within the 20--30 micron size range. Three different compositions were studied, E1, Y3A5 and E2 with 79, 62.5 and 57.5 mol% Al2O3, respectively. Such fibers were X-ray amorphous and transparent, regardless of composition in the as-produced state, and showed all the principal characteristics of the fibers made by this process: a cross section which is almost circular, a line of contact with the wheel and a clean and defect-free surface. Exposure of males to drugs or environmental chemicals can alter reproductive health and affect progeny outcome. The quality of the male germ cell is determined in part by the presence and function of stress response mechanisms. During spermatogenesis, different germ cell types display differential susceptibility to toxicants, suggesting there is variation in the presence and function of stress response mechanisms. Exposure of male rats to cyclophosphamide, a commonly used anticancer and immunosuppressive drug, alters male fertility and progeny outcome in a male-germ cell phase specific manner. This paper presents histopathological evidence that chronic encephalitis may play a pathogenetic role in some cases of focal cerebral seizures. Correlation of the pathological findings with the clinical picture in such cases demonstrates a fairly constant interrelationship. Cette étude porte sur l'étude du lien entre le bullying scolaire (intimidation scolaire) et la qualité de la vie étudiante chez les adolescents. Les comportements d'intimidation (par exemple, l'intimidation et la victimisation) ont été analysés en utilisant le Questionnaire Agresseur/Victime d'Olweus (AVO). La qualité de la vie étudiante (QDVE), a été mesurée par quatre sous-échelles du questionnaire QDVE (la satisfaction, le bien-être, l'appartenance sociale et l'auto-détermination/contrôle). Un groupe de 33 élèves provenant d'une école secondaire dans le nord du Québec a participé à l'étude. Studies have shown that mutations in parkin account for almost 50% of all juvenile-onset forms of PD, making parkin one of the most studied genes as a causative factor for PD.Ubiquitin (Ub), a small 76 amino acid protein, can be covalently attached to other proteins. This post-translational modification is used as a signal for degradation in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway (UPP). In Food, four graduate students, all to varying degrees perverse, come together in a cabalistic union. Bored and desperate, they begin to transgress a series of taboos, eventually performing communal acts of aggression, murder, and even cannibalism. Frank West, one of the students, is the novel's narrator and questionable moral center. It is through his confession that the four's "monstrous deeds" are filtered through. The goal of Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is to provide protein and non-protein energy in order to promote nitrogen retention and meet energy requirements. Controversy exists on whether glucose or lipid is the optimal source of non-protein energy. A randomized clinical trial was conducted for one week to compare the effects of TPN providing 34% of non-protein energy as lipid (Group 1; n = 7) to those of hypertonic glucose TPN (Group 2; n = 6). The purpose of this study is to interrogate how women's silences in Victorian literature, and in the Brontë canon more specifically, are calculated to facilitate female expression through diverse modes of creative and expository narrative. As a response to second-wave feminist scholarship and its emphasis on female silence as oppressive, this thesis considers the role of metafiction in Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre (1847), Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights (1847), and Anne Brontë's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848), in order to refocus attention from their heroines' subdued dialogue to more forceful, and often covert, forms of narrative control. Ageing is a biological process associated with the natural degeneration of various regions of the brain. Alteration of neural tissue in the hippocampus with ageing is typically associated with cognitive decline that may serve as a risk factor for dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. Modifiable lifestyle factors may help preserve hippocampal neural tissue (microstructure) and slow down neurodegeneration and thus promote healthy cognition in older age. Livestock production, particularly feed and manure management, accounts for a major share of this impact. Within this context, feed additives have emerged as a key mitigation pathway. Therefore, this dissertation first assessed the environmental footprint of producing commercial feed additives in Canada, identified impact hotspots and explored alternative strategies to inform eco-design. It then evaluated how nutritional strategies with vs without the supplementation of feed additive such a protease, rumen-protected B vitamins (RPBV), and protected organic acids and essential oils [P(OA+EO)], could reduce the environmental impacts of livestock production while optimizing performance. This dissertation investigates the properties of sentimentality by analyzing the move in British literature from a fascination with heightened affect to a celebration of Gothic excess during the period 1768--1796. This study develops an account of sentimentality as a model of agency, theorizes the relationship of sentimental ideology to sentimental narrative form, and traces continuities between the sentimental and Gothic modes through an examination of texts that share a preoccupation with the aesthetics and ethics of sentimentalism. Quelles sont les causes qui mènent du désordre à l'ordre ? Comment des états effondrés peuvent-ils être reconstruits ? Quelles sont les causes de l'émergence et des succès de mouvements Islamiques dans ces états en déliquescence ? Cette thèse propose une explication d'économie politique de la formation de l'état à partir des restes de l'effondrement de celui-ci. The goal of this study is to present the empirical results of a design experiment that validates the Integrated Learning Model (ILM). The study also explores the contribution of multiple Web-tools that facilitate specific learning outcomes. Using a multiple paradigmatic approach that blends the best of both cognitive and situative perspectives in an open-learning constructivist environment, three broad constructs were used to identify variables that influence learning. As part of a research program at McGill University, involving the testing of eight full-scale deep beams, this research studies the response of four full-scale deep beams that were designed in accordance with the strut-and-tie model provisions of the CSA Standard A23.3 (2004). All of the deep beams had a centre-to-centre spacing of 2000 mm between the two supports, 1000 mm in height, and 350 mm in thickness.
