The Hyp (hypophosphatemic) mouse, a murine homologue of X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) in man, is a Mendelian disorder of phosphate (Pi) homeostasis. The mutant genotype is characterized by abnormal Pi transport at the brush border membrane (BBM) of the proximal tubule and a defect in renal metabolism of vitamin D$ sb3$. The exact nature of these defects has not been elucidated. In order to determine if the defect is intrinsic to the renal cell or dependent upon an extrinsic humoral factor, I established primary cultures of renal epithelial cells from normal and Hyp mouse kidney. The effect of shear rate on the ADP-induced aggregation of human blood platelets in flow through tubes was studied over the full physiologically significant range. The extent of single platelet aggregation at 0.2 $ mu$M ADP in citrated platelet-rich plasma, PRP, was greatest at mean tube shear rate, G = 314 s$ sp{-1}$; however, aggregate size steadily decreased from G = 39.3 to 1800 s$ sp{-1}$. At 1.0 $ mu$M ADP the rate of aggregation increased up to G = 1800 s$ sp{-1}$ where virtually no unaggregated platelets remained after 43 s of flow, although, aggregate size was still limited …  Lire la suite

The centrist theory of the lower middle class is widely used to explain the Social Credit movement in Alberta. The theory assumes that members of this class are ultimately conservative, if not reactionary, in both outlook and behaviour. However, the application of the theory to the Alberta movement is shown to be problematic for several reasons. Those offering this explanation do not back up their claims with evidence. Empirical analyses of the provincial elections of 1935 and 1940 present findings which are at odds with the conventional interpretation. The basal subtype of breast cancer is generally negative for receptors that are standard therapeutic targets in other breast cancer subgroups (i.e. HER2, Estrogen Receptor (ER) and Progesterone receptor (PR)) and is therefore the most challenging type of breast cancer to treat. The molecular mechanisms governing the induction and progression of basal breast cancer are still poorly understood, and targeted therapies are lacking. Predicting signalling dependencies for therapeutic targets is further convoluted by the selective pressures encountered in the tumour microenvironment and along the metastatic cascade. This thesis consists of two parts. In the first part, projective modules are considered. The main objective is to give criteria, which when satisfied allow us to decide whether or not a projective module is stably free and whether or not it is free. We do this by analysis of the Grothendieck group of a ring and by studying cancellation theorems. The second part is similar, except that in this section equivariant projective modules are considered. This thesis strives to uncover the central narrative latent in the forms, symbols, and architectural order of Wat Phra Chetuphon, a major royal temple in Bangkok, and to consider its revelatory significance in relation to the broader question of Thai sacred building. Conventionally Wat Pho's architecture is assumed to follow a fully formed Siamese tradition.1 Though conceived within a newly challenging historical context, and with a novel pedagogic programme, the architecture's symbolic value has been, therefore, treated as largely self evident. The inability of swine as a species to utilize large quantities of fibrous material in the diet has led to much controversy, on the part of investigators and feeders, over the relative merits of certain feeds. The pig must rely largely on its caecum for the breakdown of dietary cellulose, thus the limited capacity of this organ must be considered in the interests of efficiency of production. Synaptic connectivity, as opposed to amyloid plaque or neurofibrillary tangle deposition, correlates most closely with cognitive ability in Alzheimer’s disease. In light of this, neocortical cholinergic, glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmitter-specific presynaptic bouton densities and dystrophic neurite incidence were quantified in transgenic models of the Alzheimer’s pathology. Evidence suggests that the amyloid pathology progresses in the following neurotransmitter-specific manner: cholinergic glutamatergic > GABAergic. Each neurotransmitter system displayed an elevation in presynaptic bouton density during early stages of pathology, followed by a subsequent depletion with pathological progression. Community Health Workers (CHWs) have been advocated as a means of providing primary health care to under-served populations in developing countries since the late 1960's. These community based workers are usually volunteers who receive basic training in health education, antenatal/delivery/postnatal care, and treatment of simple common illnesses. They represent a referral link between the community and professional health services. Female CHWs (FCHWs) are able to access vulnerable populations such as women and children and are often also are involved in midwifery. A method is described for using a b-ray spectrometer to measure the energies and intensities of the Y-rays emitted at the instant of capture of a thermal neutron by a nucleus. The method is applicable to very weak neutron capturers provided that they are available in large quantities, as well as to strong neutron capturers. The following work provides a psychoanalytic exploration of the contribution of images to the psychological development of children, and their consequent impact on adult communication with both the self and the other. To begin, Jean Piaget's stage theory regarding the cognitive and perceptual development of infants is studied. Its consideration and critique allow me to establish the tenets which I wish to guide my work. Over the past few years, the exoplanet research community has been discovering that hot Jupiters with dayside temperatures above ~2500 K exhibit distinct characteristics compared to their cooler peers. My thesis work provided new insights into the atmospheric composition and circulation of these “ultra-hot Jupiters” through physical modelling and space-based observations of their eclipses and phase variations.With the second-ever spectrally resolved optical eclipse observation of an exoplanet, I showed that the dayside of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-12b was devoid of clouds and consisted primarily of atomic hydrogen and helium. The purpose of this study was to examine the successes and challenges in implementing community art programs for youth in low-income communities. The National Arts and Youth Demonstration Project (NAYDP) was initiated in September 2001 in five program sites across Canada. This article reports on the qualitative findings of NAYDP staff implementation journals that were utilized in the first term of the project. Findings suggest that community partnerships in program recruitment, youth management and engagement and survey administration were all key aspects in the ability of staff to deliver the program. Many parasitic nematodes possess free-living stages in their life cycles which feed and grow in an open environment in the same way as free-living organisms. The parasitic stage of the cycle is spent within the host. In Bunostomum trigonocephalum, which is a hookworm of sheep and goats, the parasitic stage inhabits the small intestine of the host, while Graphidium strigosum parasitises the inner wall of the stomach of the rabbit and hare. A study of the metabolism of steroid hormones is beset with many difficulties if the usual biochemical methods are to be applied. One of the most important difficulties, perhaps, is that the quantities of material present in animal tissues are usually extremely small. With the availability of radioactive isotopes, the problem was considerably simplified. In fact, if a steroidal hormone is made radioactive, it becomes a simple matter to determine its distribution in tissues and therefore much easier to obtain extracts indicative of its metabolic pathway.  Lire la suite

I studied the common musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus) at the northern limit of its range at Norway Bay, Quebec, from April to October 2006. Common musk turtles are habitat specialists and are selective of their habitats at the study-area and home-range scales. Beaver ( Castor canadensis) lodges were preferred at the study-area scale. Common musk turtles also preferred beaver lodges, emergent wetlands, aquatic beds with floating and submerged vegetation as well as rocky shores at the home-range scale. Avant de guider la protéine Argonaute et inhiber l’expression génique à travers le miRISC, les miARN sont transcrits en séquences primaires (pri-miARN) qui peuvent contenir une ou plusieurs structures en apparence à une épingle à cheveux. Ces pri-miARN sont ensuite maturés dans le noyau cellulaire par le complexe du Microprocesseur. Contrasting tectonic histories from the Intermontane, Omineca and Foreland Belts at the latitude of the thesis area are consistent with a collisional model involving tectonic wedging, delamination and large-scale backthrusting. The Upper Proterozoic Ingenika Group in the Ingenika Range has undergone a progressive deformational history involving pre-, syn-, and post-metamorpic structures. During the Middle Jurassic regional structural vergence changed from northeast- to southwest-directed folds and faults. This thesis examines the little known presence of the Situationist thought in Québec literature between 1958 and 1982. This current travel from France to Québec through Patrick Straram, an exiled Parisian who arrived in Montréal in1958, and early friend of Guy Debord, the founding figure of the Situationist International (S.I.). For two decades, the Situationist thought seems to have infiltrated the writings of Hubert Aquin, Jean Basile, Nicole Brossard, Paul Chamberland, Gilbert Langevin and Straram himself, sometimes unbeknownst to them. The merger provisions of the Competition Act proclaimed on June 19, 1986 are similar in with section 7 of the Clayton Act and the decisions of U.S. Courts in antitrust merger cases. In the U.S. and Canada a merger may be enjoined only if it is likely to lessen competition substantially. Subsection 92(2) and section 93 of the Competition Act supply a list of factors that may be used in the assessment of the probable impact on competition that a merger could have. This thesis analyses the evolution of informal and formal, private and public income security mechanisms in Canada from the beginning of the colonial period to the present. The fatigue of the human diaphragm during resting ventilation^was found to be determined by the fraction of the maximal trans-^diaphragmatic pressure used at each inspiration (Pdi/Pdi(' )max) and the fraction of the breathing cycle time spent in inspiration (T(,I)/T(,TOT)). A fatigue threshold relation was found between the Pdi/Pdi(' )max and the T(,I)/T(,TOT). This fatigue threshold corresponds to a quadratic hyperbola function given by the product (Pdi/Pdi(' )max) times (T(,I)/T(,TOT)). This product was termed the diaphragmatic tension-time index (TTdi) and at the fatigue threshold is equal to .15 (TTdi crit). This work explores the interreligious paradigms proposed by Sri Lankan theologian Aloysius Pieris from a liberationist methodological standpoint. Pieris' paradigms uncover the exclusivist tendencies of some liberation theology toward 'religion' and the anti-liberative tendencies of the inculturationist school of interreligious dialogue. The Christ-against-Religion paradigm delineates how some Latin American liberation theology constructs a sharp dichotomy between "liberative faith" and "popular religion." The Christ-of-Religion paradigm of the Brahminic Ashram movement in India is focused on personal liberation without regard for systemic poverty and oppression. Closely linked to the notion of God, spirituality dominates throughout Gabrielle Roy's writings. The characters speculate about the meaning of life and death, about good and evil. Of all Roy's writings, it is undoubtedly in Alexandre Chenevert that these searching questions are most expressly depicted. In this thesis, we will study the manner in which the romantic background of Alexandre Chenevert reflects the religious experience of post-war French Canadians. Under the guise of distorted images, the novel does, in fact, hide an abundant network of themes referring to the religious context of the 1940's-1950's. Prostate-specific antigens (PSA) help monitor the post-therapy course of prostate cancer. If radiotherapy is successful, levels reach a nadir, and remain low or possibly rise very slowly. A sustained steep increase indicates biochemical failure. Serial PSA measurements are rarely perfectly monotonic. The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) consensus panel defines biochemical failure as three consecutive PSA increases. I examined the sensitivity and specificity of the ASTRO criterion using simulations of realistic, sophisticated data sets, that accurately reflect the systematic and random variations observed in PSA series.
