This thesis presents a quantitative protocol of proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) that allows the determination of human amniotic fluid metabolite concentrations, which are then used in a metabonomic study to establish patient health during gestation. 1H NMR free inductive decays (FIDs) of 258 human amniotic fluid samples from a 500MHz spectrometer are acquired. Quantitative analyses methods in both the frequency- and time-domain are carried out and compared. Frequency-domain analysis is accomplished by integration of the metabolite peaks before and after the inclusion of a known standard addition of alanine. In this thesis the problem of wide-band matching will be discussed with special attention to antenna matching in the U.V.F. range. A method of attack is suggested and several examples worked out. Nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) is a cellular event by which messenger RNAs (mRNA) possessing a premature termination codon (PTC) are rapidly degraded to avoid production of incomplete proteins. NMD is a translation-dependent cytoplasmic and nucleus-associated event. Eukaryotic initiation factor 4AIII (eIF4AIII) is a RNA-helicase protein found mostly in the nucleus. It is related to the eIF4AI and eIF4AII proteins, which are localized to the cytoplasm where they are involved in translation initiation. This dissertation deals with the changes which have intervened since the inception of deregulation in the US and Canadian airline industry, in the 'effort bargain'. It deals first with the role of economic, institutional and legislative conditions, in each country, on labour, through a comparison of aggregate labour outcomes from 1960 to 1990. It subsequently assesses the impact of carriers' strategies to lower costs through an analysis of the collective agreements of pilots, flight attendants, mechanics and agents. Recognized as the first medieval instances of the romance genre, the Roman de Thebes, Roman d'Enéas, Roman de Brut and Roman de Troie (ca. 1150-1165) are based on the rewriting of Latin texts deeply rooted in history. Microbial mats exist in freshwater pools atop the Ward Hunt and Markham ice shelves in the Canadian high Arctic. In this study, culture-dependent and culture-independent techniques were used to describe the microbial diversity and activity of these mat communities.Bacterial and archaeal 16S rRNA gene clone libraries were constructed from Markham and Ward Hunt mat samples. Bacterial libraries from both mats had high diversity, though the Markham library appeared more diverse than the Ward Hunt library. Over 95% of sequences in both bacterial libraries, and all isolates from both mats, grouped within the phyla Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria. The two-dimensional discrete convolution operator is targeted for performance improvement in order to speed up image processing work loads. Since the large computation requirements for this operation are especially taxing to single processor computers, the approach is to consider parallel processing alternatives. Landscape simplification and the intensification of farming practices have negative effects on the provision of many non-food ecosystem services (ES). Incorporating greater landscape heterogeneity in cropped areas (i.e. greater farmland heterogeneity) may be a key lever to increase ES provision. To date, studies have mostly focused on the effects of farmland heterogeneity on biodiversity or a single ES, and at a single scale. Designing experiments to answer fundamental problems is a major methodological challenge. Over the last decade, a series of experiments investigated the human brains’ ability to create phenomenological representations similar between individuals. They suggested an audacious answer to the so-called Problem of the similarity of percepts: that our brains might be physically attuned to the neural activity, and consequently to the percepts, of others. ABSTRACT The present project provides information on the nutritional health of James Bay Cree children and youth who have been deeply affected by nutrition transition and are now at risk for overweight and poor diet quality. The current thesis found that 63.2% of the Cree youth aged 9 to 18 years old were at risk of overweight while 47.2% were overweight. Almost all of the participants reported consuming high-sugar and high-fat foods which accounted for 12.8% and 40% of their total energy intake respectively. The stabilization and immobilization of laccase enzymatic extract, obtained from Coriolus hirsutus, and its biocatalysis in organic solvent media (OSM) for the synthesis of selected oligophenols, were investigated. Among the investigated lyopotectants, 2.5% mannitol was found to be the most appropriate one, where the stability of the laccase lyophilized extract was greatly enhanced, with 96.2, 38.9 and 24.7% of residual activity after 4 weeks of storage at -80, 4 and 25°C, respectively. L'objectif de cette étude était d'examiner si les quantités de calcium, de vitamine D et d'acides gras oméga-3 et oméga-6 consommées par les femmes; allaintantes, habitant à Montréal, sont en accord avec les valeurs recommandées. L'alimentation d'un échantillon de 70 femmes qui allaitaient de manière prédominante a été évaluée par des rappels de 24 heures faits à 1 (Initial), 3 et 6 mois après l'accouchement et analysée utilisant le fichier Canadien sur les éléments nutritifs. This thesis discusses results on the development of three-dimensional (3D) Ni-based electrocatalytic layers for hydrogen production by water electrolysis in an acidic medium. This is of relevance to the development of polymer-electrolyte-membrane (PEM) hydrogen generators, which are promising hydrogen production systems suitable for both residential and industrial applications. It was demonstrated that patterning of a glassy carbon electrode substrate with a 3D polyaniline (PANI) matrix is a convenient way of increasing the electrocatalytically active surface area of electrodeposited Ni, and hence its apparent electrocatalytic activity. Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are the most common cause of chronic kidney disease in infants. CAKUT includes a spectrum of urinary tract anomalies that can be found alone or in combination, such as vesicoureteral reflux, and duplex kidneys. Murine models of these defects have been instrumental in identifying novel genetic regulators of both normal and aberrant kidney development. In mammals, kidney formation proceeds through three phases; pro-, meso- and metanephric development. Gene inactivation studies have identified essential regulators at each stage of normal kidney development. Cases of head and neck cancer (HNC), particularly of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC), have risen in incidence due to human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. Recently, HPV-positive OPC has been recognized as a distinct HNC subtype due to its unique etiology, marked molecular characteristics, and superior patient prognoses and treatment responses. However, treatment modalities remain the same regardless of HPV status, consisting of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy combinations, which often result in severe acute or chronic toxicities. With favorable responses in HPV-positive OPC, de-escalated therapeutic strategies have been explored in these patients to minimize treatment-related adverse events while maintaining anti-cancer efficacy. There are five isoforms of Gβ and 12 isoforms of Gγ in mammals, yet much remains unknown about their distinct functions. While past research has focused on the Gα subunits of heterotrimeric G proteins, much less is known about Gβγ subunits in general. This project explored the impact of different Gβγ isoforms on transcription in HEK 293 cells and in primary rat neonatal cardiac fibroblasts (RNCFs) to understand their unique roles in regulating fibrotic signaling cascades. When the Universe was around 10 billion years old, it became dominated by dark energy andbegan to accelerate in its expansion. This stage in the expansion history of the Universe iscrucial for distinguishing dark energy models. The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity MappingExperiment (CHIME) is a radio telescope designed to measure the expansion during this periodby mapping the large-scale distribution of neutral hydrogen gas. CHIME will directly detect thehydrogen 21 cm emission redshifted to frequencies between 400 and 800 MHz. Dans cette thèse, je démontre que la tradition phénoménologique développe une redéfinition ontologique de l’individuation du sujet fondée sur la notion d’intentionnalité opérante. J’explique comment cette redéfinition offre une nouvelle approche de la vision du monde et des relations intersubjectives qui ne serait ni réflexive ni représentative. Néanmoins, cette configuration montre le développement parallèle de l’individuation du sujet et de ses expressions, grâce à une ontologie relationnelle, aux implications épistémologiques et éthiques. The electrical and electrochemical properties of self-assembled n-alkylthiol monolayers (SAMs) on gold are important if SAMs are to be used as molecular building blocks in biomimetic membranes and in micro- or nano-electronics. Increase in profits corresponding to a one unit increase in Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) for 3 production traits and for 21 type traits were estimated from 31,123 merged "Official" first lactation records, type records and Estimated Breeding Value (EBVs) records of Canadian Holstein cows using multivariate REML and a mixed model accounting for herd and year of calving effects. Il est établi que les marqueurs du renouvellement osseux (formation et résorption osseuses) mesurés dans le sérum augmentent pendant la nuit et atteignent leur taux maximum à l’aube, puis ils chutent en fin d’après-midi. Premierement, nous presentons une nouvelle approche pour modeliser un contactentre deux objets rigides qui augmente le modele du point de friction de Coulomb avec descontraintes sur les moments de force de roulement et de pivotement. Canola fuels a multi-billion dollar industry in Canada. It is a Canadian trademarked name of specific cultivars derived from specific Brassicaceae plants. Cis-NATs are natural antisense transcripts that overlap a gene and are not translated into proteins. Instead, they silence their parent gene's expression through various mechanisms. Their role in humans is well established, but their role in plants is relatively obscure. The goal of this thesis project is to analyze the conservation of cis-NATs across 8 different Brassicaceae genera (9 species). This is useful for picking up targets for crop improvement in canola. Les processus de production d'images de l'industrie du cinéma stéréoscopique peuvent introduire des incohérences entre les points de vue de gauche et de droite et des conflits entre les indices de profondeur. Ces défauts provoquent l'antagonisme binoculaire ou forcent le système visuel à adopter une configuration extrême, deux phénomènes qui impactent négativement la qualité de l'expérience en salle. Pour réduire la probabilité de ces défauts, un contrôle qualité approfondi doit être exercé. This study examined traditional instruction and problem-based learning (PBL) approaches to teaching and the extent to which they foster the development of desirable cognitive processes, including metacognition, critical thinking, physical intuition, and problem solving among undergraduate physics students. The study also examined students' approaches to learning and their perceived role as physics students. The research took place in the context of advanced courses of electromagnetism at a Canadian research university. This thesis focuses on the relationship between innovation and social learning in the foraging context, across and within bird species, using two different sources of data: anecdotal reports from the literature, and experimental tests in the laboratory and the field. In chapter 1, I review the trends in innovation and social learning in the avian literature, and contrast them with trends in mammals, especially primates. The rate of intraspecific nest parasitism was determined for a colony of Red-breasted Mergansers (Mergus serrator) nesting on the Tern Islands in Kouchibouguac National Park, New Brunswick. In order to recognize instances of nest parasitism, field criteria and microsatellite analysis testing for parentage between attending hens and the eggs in their nests were used. Traditionally, molecular analysis has involved collecting blood samples from females and offspring, however, for the purpose of this study, DNA was extracted successfully from feathers, egg membranes, and unhatched embryos which were collected during the summers of 1999 and 2000.
