La régulation post-transcriptionelle de l'expression des gènes joue un rôle essentiel dans le développement animal et dans diverses pathologies. Cette régulation est principalement contrôlée par la région 3ʹUTR non traduite de l'ARN messager (ARNm). Les microARNs (miARNs) sont de courts ARN d'environ 21 nucléotides et lorsque le complexe associé (miRISC) s'apparie avec les 3ʹUTRs, une inhibition traductionnelle, la déadenylation et la dégradation des ARNm est initiée. Plusieurs protéines de liaisons à l'ARN (RBPs) régulent l'expression des gènes par des mécanismes similaires. Biomedicine evolved from art to science. Based on the science, biomedicine built its culture. The scientific biomedical culture cannot cope with individual needs expressed during a consultation. The doctor-patient relationship, more than a simple encounter where biomedicine can flex its muscles against a disease, is the expected moment where the patient's illness will be alleviated. The scientific construct "disease" has no correlation with the social construct "illness". Doctor and patient are, therefore, not in opposing fields but in different universes. We study the problem of classifying stop and nasal consonants in continuous speech independently of the speaker. We consider some acoustic parameters computed from the auditory spectrogram, and other parameters computed from the speech waveform. The classification algorithm uses a recurrent multi-layer perceptron (MLP) with localized connections. The design of the classifier is motivated by knowledge in phonetics and in pattern recognition. We report experiments for the TIMIT database, using 343 speakers in the training set and 77 different speakers in the test set. Turning Over is a 13-minute composition for 13 instruments, piano, electronic piano and pre-recorded electronics. A strong emphasis on harmony, representing the result of two years of research into various intonation theories of the 17th, 18th and 20th centuries, is reflected in the subtle variations in intonation between the equal-tempered acoustic instruments and the just-intonation tuning of the electronics as well as the electronic piano. The musical discourse reflects philosophical concerns regarding the concept of essence in music and its illusive nature – this translates into a musical form that is in a constant state of transformation.  Lire la suite

Chronic water insecurity on First Nations reserves is embedded in flawed and fragmented governance and chronic underfunding. These structural issues affect all First Nations communities yet some communities have access to clean drinking water and some do not. In this work, I ask: How can variation in First Nations communities’ access to clean drinking water in Ontario be explained? Through a mixed-methods approach, using expert interviews and statistical analysis, the insight that emerges most clearly is that remoteness matters. These studies examined motion trajectories and electromyographic (EMG) activity patterns during human horizontal reaching movements towards single- and double-step visual targets. These data were used to test and elaborate a model of two-joint planar arm movement based on the equilibrium point (EP) hypothesis or $ lambda$ model of motor control. This work aims to understand how reaching movements are planned and controlled by the nervous system. To this end, simulated trajectories and EMG patterns, generated with hypothetical central commands, were compared to empirical trajectories and EMG patterns. Variables that promote resilience, adaptive functioning despite adversity, were examined in 37 First Nations adolescents from a remote region in Northern-Quebec. Intelligence, and social perspective coordination, the ability to negotiate the self's and other's points of view in social situations, were offered as moderators of the effect of stress on competence. Competence was defined as developmentally-appropriate functioning in academic, behavioural, and social domains, and stress was operationalized as a combination of negative life events and demographic stressors. Better intellectual functioning and perspective coordination abilities were commensurate with elevated levels of academic performance and positive classroom behaviours. A Posner-like visual orienting task was used to compare social and nonsocial endogenous orienting among children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and typically developing children matched on nonverbal mental age of approximately 8.5 years. This comparison was accomplished in the visual modality to avoid cross-modality task demands and with a particular focus on equating the stimuli with regard to complexity as these factors may have influenced earlier findings of a social orienting impairment among persons with ASDs. Longitudinal research on externalizing disorders has demonstrated that the signs of this form of psychopathology emerge early in life. For example, physically aggressive behaviours can be first observed as early as 18 months of age. Most preschool-aged children develop the self-regulatory abilities to inhibit these problem behaviours and express their aggressive and competitive impulses in alternative, constructive ways. Some children do not develop these abilities and chronic psychosocial difficulties typically result. Several researchers have raised the possibility that Parent-child rough-and-tumble play (RTP) interactions give parents and children an opportunity to develop the child's self-regulatory abilities. Sixty teachers from the Ottawa-Carleton region of Canada were surveyed to measure their knowledge of child maltreatment risk indicators, knowledge of reporting procedures, and the frequency of reporting sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect. Correlations did not support the hypothesis of a significant relationship between knowledge and actual reporting frequency. Multiple Regression analyses demonstrated that the knowledge of child maltreatment risk factors and the knowledge of reporting procedures were not predictive of reporting. The principle 'best interests of the child' has been expanded by the legal community in recent years to apply to any matter involving children in family law proceedings. The weight ascribed to this principle, however, has been diluted. In custody, access and child protection cases, evidence of which custodial arrangements are in a child's interests are often presented by adult parties in prolonged and costly proceedings. The judge makes an order which is intended to meet the child's "best interests", in the child's absence. Campylobacter jejuni is a foodborne pathogen that is the most frequent cause of bacterial gastroenteritis cases globally. C. jejuni can enter a viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state in unfavourable conditions whereby it becomes undetectable by using the conventional culture media. This is of particular concern due to its ability to resuscitate under suitable conditions and potentially infect consumers. The goal of this thesis project was to induce C. jejuni into the VBNC state through a variety of adverse conditions that could occur in the food industry and test their resuscitation capability in embryonated chicken eggs. Ce projet a combiné des technologies précédemment utilisées (Zane, 2012, Hannon, 2011) dans le but d'éxaminer l'interaction dynamique entre les forces appliquées par la main sur le bâton et les forces de flexion du bâton lui-même lors du lancé frappé et du tir du poignet. Dix-huit sujets adultes mâles, tous joueurs de hockey (11 de haut calibre, HC et 7 de bas calibre, LC), ont été étudiés. Ce mémoire cherche à montrer que l'African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) constitue une « mutation » de l'humanitaire médical, aussi bien dans le temps (à travers l'histoire de l'organisation) que dans l'espace (de l'Europe, lieu d'origine de l'humanitaire jusqu'au siège social d'AMREF en Afrique de l'Est). The historical background of the treatise is presented within the contexts of the early `Abbasid regime (750-900), the Christian communities of the time, the impact of the translation movement, the rise and development of polemic discourse between Muslims and Christians, and the life and works of al-Jaḥiẓ.
