2003 — Cinema, language, reality : digitization and the challenge to film theoryRésumé
Digital cinema has provoked a strong response over the last decade, not only from the movie-going public, but also from film theorists. It has re-opened basic theoretical questions about cinematic representations of and reference to reality. This thesis begins with a critical review of the vast theoretical literature dealing with the digitization of the cinema. Most theorists have come to the conclusion that the cinema is dead because digitization has severed the ties between what we see on the screen and real life. At root, this conclusion is derived from a structuralist, nominalist position prevalent in contemporary film theory. I …

[...] Lire la suite

2022 — Stochastic optimization of stope design and long-term underground mining production scheduling for sublevel open stoping mining operationsRésumé

1998 — The effect of ammonium chloride and leupeptin on the concentration of prosaposin in endosomes and lysosomes of marshall cells /Résumé
Prosaposin is a glycoprotein that exists in two forms: a 65-kDa isoform which is found in lysosomes and a 70-kDa form which is secreted to the extracellular space. In the lysosome, prosaposin is proteolytically cleaved into four polypeptides named saposin A, B, C and D. Each of these subunits mediates the breakdown of glycosphingolipids in conjunction with specific hydrolases present in the lysosome. The absence of either a saposin or the specific hydrolase is the cause of a number of lysosomal storage diseases, such as a variant form of Gaucher's disease and metachromatic leukodystrophy. Although the 65-kDa isomer is found … Lire la suite

1991 — A man-machine interface for PC-controlled injection moulding /Résumé
In parallel to the development of a PC-control system for injection moulding, a workable user interface for man-machine communication was developed. The hardware includes an IBM PC/AT, PS/2 model 70. A real-time multi-task operating system, QNX 4.0 (Quantum Software Sys. Ltd.) was installed to run applications programmed in the language C (WATCOM Sys. Inc.). A top-down structure was adopted, comprising menus, warnings, and directives. The user interface includes three tasks to run concurrently, the main-task, the real-time machine-status display task, and the task to display the current barrel-heater temperatures. Four controller types, a digital PID and three discrete controllers, the … Lire la suite

2003 — Lung mechanics in mice : effect of decorin deficiencyRésumé
Decorin is required for the normal fibrillogenesis and spatial arrangement of collagen. As collagen is important in determining the elastic behaviour of the lung, we hypothesized that lung tissue mechanics would be altered in decorin deficient (Dcn-/-) mice. Complex impedance, pressure-volume curves, and length-stress curves of lung parenchyma were measured in C57BL/6 mice, 6 Dcn-/- and 6 wildtype ( Dcn+/+), both in vivo and in vitro. Immunohistochemistry and Western blotting were performed to identify decorin and biglycan in the lung tissues. In vivo, airway resistance was decreased and lung compliance was increased in Dcn-/- mice. In vitro, length-stress curves showed … Lire la suite

2007 — Tyrosinase nanocapsules for the lowering of systemic tyrosine for the treatment of melanomaRésumé

2005 — Evaluating the effectiveness of environmental education essential elements in school field trip programmingRésumé
This thesis investigated the apparent effectiveness of environmental education essential elements in school field trip programming. First, the elements essential to environmental education field trips were identified from the literature. Second, these elements were incorporated into a questionnaire that was administered as a pre/post test to elementary school students visiting an extensive indoor environmental education facility located in Montreal. Finally, 24 environmental education programs at eight institutions in Montreal were observed to investigate the extent and methodology of implementation of the essential elements. With regard to the chief institution, it was concluded that (1) the educational programming appeared to significantly … Lire la suite

1995 — Cultural studies of science : skinning bodies in Western medicineRésumé
This thesis explores the cultural implications underlying the medical practice of cutting human flesh. The examination focuses, in particular, on the function of representational technologies--from anatomy sketches to computer imaging--in the scientific understanding of the body in the West. By foregrounding the technologies of representation which inform and have directed a history of surgery, it is hoped that the cultural aspects of modern medicine will be made apparent. This thesis argues that while science benefitted from art to construct its image of 'the' body, it has had to rid itself of art in order to justify its empirical claims. The … Lire la suite

1987 — A barotropic stability study of free and forced planetary waves /Résumé
The stability of free and forced planetary waves in a $ beta$-channel is investigated with a barotropic model. The forced waves at equilibrium result from a constant mean-zonal wind interacting with a finite-amplitude topography. The frequencies of all infinitesimal perturbations to the equilibrium flows are determined numerically as a function of the flow parameters. The results are interpreted using a truncated spectral model and related to those of previous studies with infinite $ beta$-planes. In contrast to some earlier analytical studies we find that unstable long waves $(L sb{x}$ $>$ $L sb{y})$ exist under superresonant conditions. We also report on … Lire la suite
