The dissertation examines how image-making, a common pastime, was made common. It investigates the ways in which the production and consumption of images in the context of the North American family contributed to the development of a distinctly domestic and privatized visual culture, and the transformation of the home into a site for privatized spectatorship. Four cultural forms (No. 1 Kodak, Box Brownie, Cine Kodak and Cine Kodak 8) are specified in this development, all pioneered by the Eastman Kodak Company. The thesis examines the problems of the "observer" and "objectivity." I review Thomas Kuhn's concept of "paradigm shift" in order to access wider debates in the history and philosophy of science concerning epistemological development. I argue against traditional notions of "objectivity" and "rationality" that proceed to "naturalize" the binary opposition between the natural sciences and other intellectual pursuits. To make this argument I draw from feminist critics of science, including Sandra Harding, Evelyn Fox Keller, and Donna Haraway, who reconsider more palpable conceptions of "objectivity" and "rationality" for a feminist science project. With Hecate Nocturne, I set out to create a unified piece of substantial length. The piece features certain sounds of British Columbia---birds, animals, wind, water, machinery, and folksong; their musical depictions represent a growing interest of mine, one which was expanded significantly in this piece. The primary goal of the thesis is a close interconnection of all musical material, at all levels; that a limited pool of material could produce, through motivic development, all the components of the piece, from small to large. "Amblyseius barkeri developed well on early first instar~ occidentalis nymphs, whereas few ~ cucumeris immatures survived on this diet. Consumption rates of 4 to 24 h and 72 h old thrip nymphs were similar for the two species, but~ cucumeris was able to capture more 48 h nymphs than could ~ barkeri. When offerred eggs and nymphs of Tetranychus urticae and nymphs of~ occidentalis, ~ cucumeris' rm was similar to that of~ barkeri feeding exclusively on~ occidentalis nymphs. Despite the recognition that culturally diverse groups of children in low income areas are at elevated risk for future health problems, no dietary/nutritional studies have been reported on this population. Children aged 9-12 were sampled from schools selected on the basis of a poverty index and ethnicity. Nutritional information (24-hour recall, heights and weights) indicated children were growing well but a high proportion were overweight. A comparison of reported energy intake to calculated BMR indicated that overweight children under-estimated their intakes. Normal Language requires the integration of formal, conceptual, and pragmatic knowledge. It appears to involve the analytic processing of the left hemisphere and the holistic processing of the right. To study hemisphere involvement in language processing, patients with unilateral right or left hemisphere lesions and a matched neurologically normal control group were tested on their ability to perceive stress and intonation contrasts in words and phrases of varying length. The results suggest that both hemispheres are involved in normal language processing, each in a qualitatively different way. This work includes several studies exploring functional specialization of human primary and anterior secondary auditory cortex (AC) in the two hemispheres. It was hypothesized that the left hemisphere prepotency for linguistic processing is based, in part, on specialized mechanisms within this hemisphere for the processing of acoustic transients relevant to speech. Evidence supporting this idea was obtained in a positron emission tomography study (PET). Since nonlinguistic stimuli were used, the observed left-hemispheric activation cannot be specific to the speech system, but must reflect a more general processing mechanism. Abnormally slow processing of language may be a factor contributing to the poor verbal memory seen in many patients with lesions of the anterior temporal region in the left hemisphere. This possibility was examined by comparing the performance of 12 patients with left temporal-lobe resections (LT), 10 patients with similar lesions in the right hemisphere (RT) and 13 normal control (NC) subjects on a lexical-decision task, a sentence-plausibility-judgement task, and a story-recall task. The purpose of this thesis is to compare mother-child relationships with respect to children born prematurely to mother child relationships with respect to children born at full term. It represents one aspect of a larger research project directed to the evaluation of the relationship between paranatal stress, cognitive organization and intrafamily dynamics. Mother-child relationships were measured by means of a modified version of the Fels Scale for the Appraisal of Parent Behavior consisting of eighteen variables of parental behaviour. Substantial numbers of adolescents suffer from the detrimental effects of internalized shame, however no assessment scale existed specifically for use with youth. Consequently, this study utilized multidimensional scaling, focus groups and questionnaires to develop the Adolescent Internalized Shame Scale. Analyzes revealed some clinicians do not adequately differentiate shame and guilt, adolescents unquestionably comprehend the feelings and ramifications of shame and there are significant gender differences in how youth experience shame. Statements generated by youth during focus groups and on the questionnaires raise considerable concerns regarding the painful experience of shame, and the resultant feelings of self-harm and suicide. The aim of the historical geographer is to reconstruct and interpret past landscapes (i.e. the physical and cultural aspects of the surface of the earth) at significant cross-sections in the historical development of a region. The landscape at any point of time is the result of the historical processes gone before, and will itself change, with time, into a new landscape with different physical and cultural characteristics. During the winter months of 1950-1951 a pneumococcal infection, type 19, broke out among our guinea pigs. Sulfonamide therapy was started immediately; all animals, healthy or sick, receiving one-half grain per pound body weight of sulfamethazine every day in their drinking water. Sera, to be used as complement for the serological laboratory, was always obtained from large healthy guinea pigs. During the pneumococcal outbreak, greater care than ever was taken to see that only healthy animals were used, but in spite of the precautions taken, it soon became evident that the complement was unsatisfactory. The thesis presents a development of J. L. Austin's analysis of truth and its accompanying analysis of sentence structure. This involves a discussion and refinement of Austin's notions of the demonstrative and descriptive conventions of language and of the demonstrative and descriptive devices of sentences. The main point of the thesis is that ordinary language must be treated as an historical phenomenon: one that has evolved its more complex features through a long series of variations upon a small number of rudimentary conventions and locutions. Airlines in Canada and the United States of America desiring to purchase commercial aircraft are confronted today with serious legal and financial problems. In general, the financial problems in both countries are related to the fact that the cost of new equipment is very high in proportion to airline earnings. The earnings of the United States trunklines for the year 1960 are estimated to be about $4 million, at the lowest point since 1949. The phrase 'Covenant Chain' is unique in the English language and along with its antecedents---'linked arms', 'the rope', and the 'iron chain'---the Haudenosaunee established relationships with the Europeans. The 'Covenant Chain' has been the subject of extensive discussion since the mid-1980s when a group of scholars in Iroquois Studies published several volumes on the diplomacy of the Haudenosaunee during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Most studies focus on the political aspects of the Covenant Chain and the role it played in creating and sustaining alliances. This thesis presents the theory required to estimate the available test time in the expansion tube with a reactive gas assuming perfect conditions. The superiority of the expansion tube over the non-reflected and reflected shock tubes will be shown. Further, a method of increasing testing times of combustible flows in the expansion tube through use of a chemical inhibitor is proposed and validated theoretically. Privatization of federal correctional services in Canada is extensive. It has gained considerable momentum since the present Conservative government came into power in 1984. Privatization has allowed the government to cut costs, but has not addressed the underlying issue: the high rate of delinquency. The author argues that, in the future, correctional services will not be purely private, but neither will they be wholly public. Correctional services and the operational aspects of corrections will involve a mix of the public and private sectors. This thesis contains four manuscripts examining the respiratory mechanics of normal and stuttering speech. The first study (J.Appl.Physiol. 75 (2):696-703, 1993) examined lung volume (V scL) during stutterers' relatively fluent speech. We showed that stutterers used the V scL extremes. This suggested that stutterers recruited their respiratory muscles in a different manner than normals to maintain subglottic pressure (Psg). We therefore investigated respiratory muscle recruitment patterns in normals and stutterers. In the second study, (submitted to J.A.P.), we modified the Campbell pressure volume diagram by the addition of abdominal pressure (Pab) and by the use of a surrogate relaxation curve. …  Lire la suite

This thesis considers the rationalization of health care in Canada. It focuses on the conflicting roles modern physicians play in our system, acting as both patient advocate and social agent. It begins by tracing the origin of both of these duties. It then examines the ethical, professional, and legal issues which arise in the limited circumstances where front-line physicians must participate in the rationing of health care. This work challenges common arguments as to the division of the political from other fictional genres and, in treatments of nineteenth-century fiction and culture, the private from the public sphere. Through an examination of works by Mary Wollstonecraft, Amelia Opie, Maria Edgeworth, and Elizabeth Gaskell, I uncover a common concern with the preconditions of liberal selfhood which posits the household as the space in which the political rights-bearer, defined by interiority and mental qualities, comes to be.
