Abdominoperineal resection with permanent colostomy has been traditionally performed for low rectal cancers, but with advances in multimodal therapies, these patients increasingly undergo sphincter preservation. This avoids a permanent colostomy but has other trade-offs such as bowel dysfunction, which occurs in at least 40% of patients after surgery. This may have significant negative impacts on their health-related quality of life (HRQOL) to the point where a not insignificant proportion of them would have preferred a permanent colostomy. The study focuses on the cognitive assessment of certification examination in medicine. The purpose was to investigate the relationship between the structure of the examination questions and the examinees' written responses. The responses from three groups of residents with undergraduate degrees from McGill (3), Toronto (2) and Manitoba (2) medical schools were used. A sample of one basic science and two clinical question in Endocrinology were selected. The responses were analyzed using cognitive methods which provided a qualitative assessment of subjects' knowledge structures relative to task. A numerical modelling of the 4--5 July 1999 derecho was performed. The storm caused over 40 million dollars of damages, several deaths and injuries across the United States and Canada. The unseasonal synoptic settings resulted in the formation of low-level moisture pooling and the buildup of convective available potential energy. The upper-level jet streak eventually furnished the trigger for the outbreak of precursor deep convection leading to the development of this derecho. The results illustrated the feasibility of simulating the derecho using a mesoscale model with the NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction) reanalysis. A study was conducted to investigate the effects of age on functional recovery following a median and/or ulnar nerve repair. A group of 17 children was compared to a group of 17 adults with nerve injuries of similar severity and site. Motor and sensory function, tactile gnosis, manual dexterity, pain and perception of disability were assessed by an independent examiner. The results indicate a better qualitative and quantitative recovery in children than in adults, with respect to two-point discrimination, grip strength, tactile gnosis, manual dexterity and self-report of performance in daily activities. This thesis explores the various manifestations of irony in prose-fiction by women in Quebec from 1960 to 1980. Traditionally used by men, irony is gradually becoming more widespread in women's writing, which in itself is an interesting reversal: more often "objects" of irony, women now reverse the rules of the game and become ironizing "subjects". The heat transfer characteristics of turbulent impinging jets, typical of those used in paper machine cross machine direction caliper profile control were measured. The effect of jet entrainement on the impingement heat transfer by unconfined jets was successfully scaled using a jet thermal entrainement factor. The addition of a confinement plate to an existing unconfined impinging jet control system was shown to improve the average heat transfer by 33% and 80% for a nozzle-to-impingement surface spacing of 2 and 1 respectively. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of phytosterols (PS) on lipid profiles and cholesterol kinetics of hypercholesterolemic individuals with or without type 2 diabetes. It was hypothesised that the response to PS would differ between both groups due to different lipid metabolism. During this randomised, double blind, crossover trial, participants consumed a controlled diet with placebo or PS for 21 days. Plasma total cholesterol (TC) decreased with placebo and PS (10.9% and 9.7% in non-diabetic versus 11.6% and 13.6% in diabetic participants, p < 0.05). The purpose of this program of research was to study how socialization agents can facilitate children's internalization of important but uninteresting activities. Self-determination theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 1980, 1985b, 1991, 2000) posits that autonomy is essential in fostering optimal (i.e. integrated) internalization. It was thus hypothesized that autonomy-support would facilitate internalization while offering rewards for compliance would thwart it. In the present thesis, two experimental studies and one longitudinal study compared the effects of autonomy-support and rewards on children's internalization and general functioning. A satisfactory definition of the imagination has proved elusive in Western philosophy. Two contemporary French thinkers, Gilbert Durand and Paul Ricoeur, are concerned with establishing a fundamental philosophy of imagination. For Durand the imagination is the source of symbolic mediations that are both therapeutic and theophanic. His theory is grounded in a Platonist-esoteric tradition which he supports by a philosophy of the imaginal (coined and articulated by Henry Corbin, a French Islamicist). Investigating modern material processes that involve solidification and microstructure formation proves difficult with first principle modeling techniques due to the wide range of timescales and lengthscales involved. In this thesis, we present improvements to the phase-field crystal (PFC) methodology that allows for the study of atomic-mesoscale phase transition phenomena that operate on diffusional time scales which are inaccessible to molecular dynamics type models. La dépression majeure est un trouble mental sévèrement incapacitant, traité principalement pharmacologiquement par les antidépresseurs. Leur efficacité est cependant relative, puisque près d'un tiers des patients sous traitement n'atteignent pas la rémission et cela même après plusieurs traitements. The influence of stages of development, soil types, dates of seeding, cultivars, and boron nutrition on glucosinolate composition and variation in rutabaga (Brassica napobrassica Mill.) and turnip (B, rapa L.) cultivars was studied by quantifying the glucosinolate hydrolysis products in these species. While in seeds of both species contents of goitrin and volatile isothiocyanates were inversely correlated, there was little variation in thiocyanate ion and total glucosinolate contents. Electroosmotic dewatering of Bentonite suspensions under conditions of constant DC voltage and constant DC current was investigated experimentally in a column 5 cm in diameter. The suspensions were prepared with CaCl$ sb2$ in distilled water with concentrations up to 1 M. The initial solid content was between 9.1 wt% and 26 wt% and the initial bed height ranged from 1.0 cm to 5.2 cm. Constant voltages from 4.0 V to 8.0 V and constant currents from 90 mA to 110 mA were used. Spasmolytic Polypeptide-Expressing Metaplasia (SPEM) is one of the earliest pre-malignant conditions in the stomach. Although still poorly understood, this regenerative response is driven by the trans-differentiation of post-mitotic chief cells of the stomach into proliferative mucous-secretory cells. Previous work in our laboratory has shown that Hippo signaling plays an essential role in controlling cell fate decisions during tissue regeneration. The efficiencies of several Cu(II) complexes in promoting the hydrolysis of bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl) phosphate (BDNPP) have been compared. Copper complexes of the type ((L)Cu(OH$ sb2$)$ sb2$) $ sp{2+}$, where L represents a bidentate diamine ligand, can be effective in promoting the hydrolysis of BDNPP. Furthermore, the activity of the Cu(II) complex is sensitive to the ligand structure. The structure-reactivity relationship has been explained in terms of a detailed mechanism of the reaction.
