L’ataxie spinocérébelleuse de type 6 (SCA6) est une maladie neurodégénérative qui débute en milieu de vie. Cette maladie est causée par l’expansion d’une séquence poly-Q répétée dans le gène CACNA1A qui code pour la sous-unité α1A ainsi que la terminaison C-terminal, α1ACT, du canal calcique à voltage-dépendant de type P/Q. Les individus affectés par SCA6 souffrent progressivement d’une déficience au niveau de leur coordination motrice menant à une anormalité de leur démarche. Des évaluations post-mortem chez des patients atteint d’SCA6 ont démontré une dégénérescence des cellules de Purkinje dans le cervelet. The clogging of fine-porosity geotextiles by soil particles is considered to be a problem in applications of these fabrics to filtering of municipal and industrial effluents. However, the clogging phenomenon can be an advantage for certain purposes, such as the creation of near-watertight membranes for sealing manure holding tanks. The conceived advantages of non-woven needle-punctured geotextiles are that they are less expensive due to lower material quantity, they are more resistant to tensile stresses compared to impermeable plastics and concrete, and they are easily installed. Bacterial isolates from soils contaminated with a large range of organic pollutants were tested for their ability to metabolise selected recalcitrant PAHs as their sole energy and carbon source. Plating of soil microorganisms isolated from 12 petroleum-contaminated soils on solid medium, supplemented with the PAH phenanthrene as sole carbon source, yielded 228 phenanthrene-degrading bacterial strains, of which 60 were further characterized. Southern DNA-DNA hybridization identified 14 of the 60 colonies as potentially competent in naphthalene degradation (ndoB Positive). Research on academics' conceptions of teaching hopes to enhance understanding of how and why the process of teaching in higher education looks and works the way it does. The following work critically examines this body of literature and identifies problems associated with terminology use, construct definition and methodological procedures. As a way of providing an explanation for the insufficiently elaborated methodologies used in the empirical literature, it uses a data set similar to those used in other studies. Academics' responses to questions eliciting teaching conceptions are examined and categorized via qualitative thematic analysis. This thesis examines the novel La Québécoite, published by Régine Robin in Montreal in 1983, as an example of a French literary work written by a Yiddish-speaking author. While this novel has often been associated with « migrant writings » (or « Écritures migrantes ») in contemporary Quebec, the proposed reading method focuses more on the influence of Yiddish language and culture both in terms of thematics and formal procedures. DNA markers tightly-linked to nuclear fertility restorer genes for cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) are valuable tools for breeders and researchers working with these genes. Two different targeting approaches were used to identify markers linked to the Rfp1 restorer gene for the pol CMS of canola (Brassica napus L.): nearly isogenic line (NIL) comparison and bulked segregant analysis. These methods were equally efficient in identifying markers linked to Rfp1; combining them allowed a targeting efficiency of 100% to be achieved. G protein-coupled Receptor (GPCR) signalling pathways are essential for all aspects of cell and organ physiology and the involved proteins work together to transmit signals across the plasma membrane. This process is highly regulated by a number of proteins including RGS (Regulators of G protein Signalling) proteins, which serve as GTPase-activating proteins for the Galpha subunit of heterotrimeric G proteins. Ethnobotanical and dietary questionnaires were used to assess the utilization of plants to treat the signs and symptoms of anemia by women in La Chapelle, Haiti. The usual diet of respondents was found to be low to intermediate in iron bioavailability. The ethnobotanical questionnaire showed that most respondents (82%) used plant-based home remedies to treat anemia Amaranthus dubius, Citrus aurantium, Corchorus olitorius, Moringa oleifera, Phaseolus vulgaris and Portulaca oleracea used in the diet and as remedies for anemia were analyzed. In order to develop a novel analog of the antitumour agent Mitozolomide 1, the diazotization of a variety of N-(2-aminophenyl)-N$ sp prime$-alkylureas was studied. The diazotization of N-(2-aminophenyl)-N-alkylureas of type 2a gave benzotriazole derivatives 3 (R=CONHalkyl). However, that of N-methyl-N-(2-aminophenyl)-N-alkylureas 2b gave 1,2,3,5-benzotetrazepinones 4 after the neutralization of the reaction mixture. This finding allowed the synthesis of bi- and tricyclic tetrazepinones. Electronic effects on the stability of the tetrazepinone ring system were studied by varying substituents at the benzene moiety. The inadequate and inaccurate application of corrosion monitoring techniques for testing reinforced concrete structures had led to considerable early deterioration of these facilities and has resulted in high restoration and replacement costs. The prospect and diligent use of readily available early damage detection tools for use in regular maintenance of these structures could permit timely interventions for restoration and upkeep. This research program was aimed at determining the effectiveness of selected nondestructive testing methods as reliable indicators of early onset corrosion in steel-reinforced concrete. A theory to calculate the total force and torque acting on a long slender body at rest in a fluid undergoing a uniform viscous flow was developed by R. E. Khayat and R. G. Cox. Subirrigation systems are generally used in humid areas to provide suitable moisture conditions for plant growth. These systems can also be used to reduce pesticide loadings from agricultural lands, since they tend to keep the discharging waters within farm boundaries for extended periods of time. This allows for greater pesticide microbial and chemical degradation. Heterologous anti-lymphocyte serum (ALS) and plasma (ALP) are potent immuno-suppressive agents. The findings recorded in this thesis relate to their use and mode of action in thymectomized, sham-thymectomized and non-thymectomized rats and mice. No method is at present available for the in vitro standardization of ALP in terms of immuno-suppressive potency. Potency cannot be related to either, agglutinating and cytotoxic antibody titres directed against lymphocytes or to the ability of ALP to depress lymphocyte counts. The Nutritive Value Index Has used to determine the effect of stage of maturity on the feeding value of Timothy hay when fed to sheep. The Nutritive Value Index was found to be highly significantly correlated with forage protein content and with the energy available for productive purposes. A significant decline in the feeding value of Timothy hay was observed with advances in stage of maturity. The close relationship between the Nutritive Value Index and the digestibility of cellulose in vitro indicated the usefulness of the latter procedure in predicting the feeding value of forages.  Lire la suite

Caseins are present in milk in the form of large spherical complexes called micelles that are stabilized by kappa-casein found on the surface. This stabilizing effect is lost when milk clotting enzymes hydrolyze kappa-casein thereby initiating the coagulation process. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of kappa-casein polymorphism upon hydrolysis by proteases. The A and B forms are the most common genetic variants of kappa-casein in Canadian Holstein dairy herds, representing three phenotypes AA, AB and BB. Aeroelasticity is concerned with the interaction of aerodynamic forces and the resulting structural deformations for a structure in an airflow. Flutter, which is one example of an aeroelastic phenomena, may result in the catastrophic failure of an aircraft. The traditional methods of predicting the flutter velocity, namely the $U - g$ and $p - k$, have been used with great success. However, in recent years, new methods have been suggested which approximate the unsteady aerodynamic forces and moments by rational functions. Presently, durability design of reinforced concrete structures is dealt with in a purely deterministic way and deterioration models have not been developed to their full potential. In particular, researchers who have investigated corrosion and the models currently used to predict the response of concrete, have often overlooked the effect of cracking. Cracks in concrete generally interconnect flow paths and increase the influx of water or aggressive chemical ions into the concrete, facilitating its deterioration. Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) affect about 1% of the total population and cause significant burden to families. Many NDDs are caused by mutations in specific genes, and a class of these genes code for epigenetic modifiers. To date, most disease modeling studies on NDDs have focused on investigating molecular perturbation of terminally differentiated brain cells i.e., neuronal and glial cells. Sleep is a fundamental physiological process and sleep-like states have been described in nearly every animal studied to date. Despite the existence of distinct sleep-wake states, our understanding of the mechanism of sleep regulation remains incomplete. The present work focused on a particular hypothalamic neuronal population which expresses melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH). The MCH peptide is thought to have a role in the promotion of sleep.
