Corporation characterized by members' freedom from liability for corporate debts, and partnership, characterized by inter se relations of mutual confidence and good faith, are polar types. Over the ages a host of hybrid types has evolved between those polar types. In the incorporated partnership--the final stage of that evolution--partnership and corporation coalesce. American and German law recognize the personal fiduciary character of corporate partners' inter se relations for the purpose of enforcing fiduciary duties. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a disease characterized by an arrest in alveolar development, remains one of the leading causes of morbidity in very low birth weight newborns [1, 2]. Insight into the mechanisms and genes involved in alveolarization could be used to better understand the lung pathophysiology of this disease and help with the development of new treatment interventions. Lgl1, is a developmentally regulated, glucocorticoid induced, secreted glycoprotein in the lung [3]. Biofiltration of styrene or toluene vapors was performed respectively in a biotrickling filter (BTF) with 52 L of polypropylene rings and a biofilter (BF) filled with 25 L of organic compost to study the reactors' elimination capacity (EC) and the microbial respiration activity. The biofiltration of styrene vapors confirmed the role of nutrient addition for maintaining highest elimination capacity level (EC = 0.368 mol m-3 .h -1 +/- 0.051, n = 9). This thesis examines shojo manga (Japanese comics for girls) as a site of the subversion of gender. The focus will be on stories about cross-dressing, as the crossdressed heroine poses from the outset questions about the nature of girls within shojo manga and the girls who are supposedly reading the texts. The analysis takes place at two levels: visual language and narrative. Over the course of five chapters, focusing on a couple of series in each, this thesis will show the various ways categories of gender and sex are undermined in five different subgenres. Each of two affinity isolation methods, the first based on biotinylated porcine transferrin plus streptavidin-agarose, and the second on Sepharose-coupled porcine transferrin, followed by sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), allowed the isolation and identification of two potential porcine-transferrin-binding polypeptides (~64 kDa and 99 kDa) from total membranes of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae grown under iron-restricted conditions. Both polypeptides were iron-repressible and were identified as potential receptor candidates as they were not isolated when biotinylated human transferrin was used instead of biotinylated porcine transferrin. The fundamental objectives of this research is to produce and study magnetically loaded fibers and magnetic paper. The lumen-loading of commercially available ferrimagnetic (Fe$ sb3$O$ sb4$, $ gamma$-Fe$ sb2$O$ sb3$) and ferromagnetic (CrO$ sb2$) pigments was first performed as a "physical" approach to prepare magnetic paper. Our experiments resulted in the determination of the "kraft pulp/$ gamma$-Fe$ sb2$O$ sb3$ pigment" composite as an optimal combination of optical, mechanical and magnetic properties. La schistosomiase est une maladie chronique qui représente une préoccupation majeure de santé publique en raison de son impact négatif sur la qualité de vie. L'administration de praziquantel est le pilier de la lutte contre la schistosomiase. Depuis longtemps, il a été reconnu que l'utilisation unique de praziquantel pour lutter contre la schistosomiase présente des limites importantes. En particulier, le traitement avec praziquantel n'empêche pas la reinfection; nécessitant ainsi l'administration constante de médicaments dans les régions endémiques, ce qui est insoutenable à long terme. Specimens of freshwater bryozoans (Ectoprocta) and sponges (Porifera: Spongillidae), two of the most poorly known faunal groups in Canada, were obtained from various locations in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland. A total of 14 species of bryozoans and 15 species of sponges were identified. In 31 cases, these species were recorded from a province for the first time. Species new to Canada include the bryozoans Lophopodella carteri, Plumatella orbisperma, and Pottsiella erecta, and the sponges Radiospongilla crateriformis, Spongilla aspinosa, and Trochospongilla horrida. This research examined how an invasive macrofouling organism, the Eurasian zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha), alters benthic communities in a riverine ecosystem. Controlled field experiments using artificial substrates showed that macroinvertebrate abundance is significantly enhanced within Dreissena beds, and that the physical habitat provided by mussel shells has a greater impact on macroinvertebrate abundance than biological factors (e.g., food provided by mussel biodeposits). Data collected at field sites before and after the establishment of dense Dreissena colonies suggested that these colonies alter macroinvertebrate communities on hard substrates primarily by enhancing populations of deposit-feeding organisms (e.g., amphipod crustaceans) and predators (e.g., flatworms), …  Lire la suite

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections play a crucial role in human carcinogenesis. Greater than 96% of all cervical carcinomas are positive for high-risk HPV infections; especially types 16 and 18. High-risk HPV onco-proteins, E6 and E7, are consistently expressed in such cancers and function by inactivating p53 and pRb tumor suppressors, respectively. The presence of high-risk HPVs is also correlated with anogenital cancers. In this study, we examined the effect of high-risk HPV type 16 E6 and E7 oncoproteins in two normal human colorectal epithelial cell lines, NCE1 and NCE5. A study of selected properties of stable nuclei reveals the existence of certain nuclei containing 'magic' numbers of neutrons and protons. These nuclei are characterized by high stability, large numbers of isotopes, abundance and small quadrupole moments. It is well known that the shell theory of nuclear structure, which asserts that there exists an average nuclear potential acting on the nucleon as it moves in the nucleus, can account for these magic numbers and for the ground state spins of most nuclei if a strong spin-orbit coupling is introduced empirically into the nuclear Hamiltonian. His activities as a church musician, piano and organ dealer, and journalist made a considerable impact on artistic life in the city. But it was as the founder and conductor of the Montreal Mendelssohn Choir that Gould's influence was most keenly felt. Mowrer's (1947) and Spence's (1956) suggestion that classical conditioning may play a significant role in the acquisition and performance of instrumental responses has fostered two broad lines of research. One of these bas been concerned with the role of classcally conditioned responses in instrumental behavior (Wynne & Solomon, 1955; Solomon & Turner, 1962; Miller & DeBold, 1965; Williams, 1965) and bas produced mainly negative results. Usually the first step in the evolution of a general theory is the construction of explicit relationships between the measurable quantities encountered in the simplest operations, and the second is the development of mathematical techniques for dealing with more complex operations. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, HEM13 codes for coproporphyrinogen oxidase which catalyses the sixth enzymatic step in the heme biosynthetic pathway. Coproporphyrinogen oxidase synthesis has been shown to be regulated negatively by heme and oxygen at the transcriptional level. We are interested in defining the HEM13 cis-acting upstream sequences that mediate regulation by heme. HEM13-lacZ and HEM13-CYC1-lacZ hybrid fusions were made and expression of the resulting $ beta$-galactosidase activity was determined in vivo, under conditions of varying levels of heme. The organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis (OVLT) is believed to be the central osmoreceptor involved in the regulation of extracellular fluid osmolality. While OVLT neurons have been reported to be excited by hypertonicity, it has remained unknown whether they can directly detect changes in fluid osmolality. Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings were therefore obtained from neurons acutely isolated from the OVLT. Increases and decreases in osmolality were found to cause respective depolarizations and hyperpolarizations, responses which seemed to be mediated by the volume-dependent modulation of a non-selective cationic conductance. The growth hormone receptor gene (GHR) has been previously documented to be a good candidate gene for detection of a quantitative trait locus (QTL) which influences milk production in Holstein cattle. In this study, the promoter region of the GHR gene and microsatellite markers AGAL29 and BM5004 were studied. Their effects on milk yield (MY), fat yield (FY), protein yield (PY), fat percentage (FP) and protein percentage (PP) were examined. We investigate modifications to the AdS-CFT correspondence such that it more closely resembles thermal QCD (Quantum Chromodynamics) by allowing it to have fundamental flavors, have couplings that run with energy scale and become a thermal theory. Using these modifications, we calculate three transport coefficients: the shear viscosity, the bulk viscosity and the thermal conductivity and their ratios with the entropy density (s) slightly away from the conformal boundary, to investigate the effects of changing the energy scale to first order in the small parameters of the theory. Species with different requirements can coexist if the environment varies in space; we therefore expect a positive relationship between species diversity and environmental heterogeneity. In this thesis I examine the influence of environmental structure on patterns of fern diversity in one hectare of old-growth forest and compare these patterns to other surveys covering a broad range of scales. The nineteen species recorded in the hectare had non-random spatial distributions and differed in their soil preferences. We consider the use of a sieve bootstrap based on moving average (MA) and autoregressive moving average (ARMA) approximations to test the unit root hypothesis when the true Data Generating Process (DGP) is a general linear process. We provide invariance principles for these bootstrap DGPs and we prove that the resulting ADF tests are asymptotically valid. Our simulations indicate that these tests sometimes outperform those based on the usual autoregressive (AR) sieve bootstrap. Particle-particle heat transfer is a new and promising method of heat transfer in granular materials, with numerous potential applications to processing and drying. Up to this day, however, there has been little analytical research on the fundamental mechanism of heat transfer involved in such a process, impeding its further development. In this study, an analysis was performed on the heat transfer involved in this type of process for a few simple situations. Cardiac output can be determined by infusing radioactive xenon at a constant rate and measuring the Xe concentration in the pulmonary artery and a peripheral artery. To validate this technique, a roller pump was inserted in series with the superior and inferior vena cavae. Venous return was thus equal to pump flow. In 6 mongrel dogs, a total of 19 flow measurements were obtained using xenon and compared to the pump flow. The correlation was excellent ("r" = 0.953). This research examined how sixth-grade students utilized evaluations and goals while revising their texts, to determine if those students who were identified as better writers also had more success when revising, and if specific types or configurations of operations lead to more successful revision. A coding system was developed to identify evaluations and goals according to the functions that they served during revision. Evaluations were categorized as either acceptance or rejection evaluations, depending on their judgment of the text.
