1994 — Fundamental order and the number of countable models
    Résumé

Let T be a complete, first order theory in a countable language. We investigate certain nonisolation properties of types in small superstable theories. Also, we prove that T has 2$ sp aleph$o nonisomorphic countable models in the following cases. (A) T is strictly stable and the order type of rationals cannot be embedded into O(T) and there is no strictly stable group interpretable in T$ rm sp{ sp.q}.$ (B) T is superstable, the generic of every simple group definable in T$ rm sp{ sp.eq}$ is orthogonal to all NENI types and rm sup {U(p) vert p{ in}S(T) } geq omega …  Lire la suite

2025 — Development of a microphysiological platform for the coculture of an EndoC-BH1 spheroid and an in vitro vasculature

1948 — Human relations in the fiction of Gertrude Stein.
    Résumé

Tne first, fundamental question asked of the work of an artist is this one -- does he find and collect and comminicate "reality"? And in the quality and sureness of his expressed insight lies his success or failure as an artist. The novel, the most independent, most elastic, most prodigious of literary forms, attains its object in the communication of a full, intense, complex awareness or vision of human life. "II faudrait reconnaitre que l'art du roman est, avant tout, une transpos ition du reel et non une reproduction du reel", states Franeois Mauriac.  Lire la suite

2019 — Estimate of mismatch repair deficient pancreatic cancer in patients enrolled in the Quebec Pancreas Cancer Study

2008 — Modelling ionisation chamber response to nonstandard beam configurations
    Résumé

For patient-specific quality assurance of IMRT, a point dose measurement with an ionisation chamber and a relative dose distribution with film are performed. The use of ionisation chambers follows dosimetry protocols that only deal with reference beams, for which Spencer-Attix cavity theory is valid. However, IMRT and other recent radiation delivery techniques do not comply with these protocols. Therefore, the conversion of the dose to the chamber cavity to the dose to water becomes uncertain; and the geometrical details of the chamber, as well as the details of the delivery, are expected to be significant. In this thesis, a realistic …  Lire la suite

    Résumé

This thesis presents the research to develop a technical aid for the blind to perceive images such as a face or a scenery. The images scanned and explored interactively by touch through a probe mounted on the index finger of each hand. The pixel intensities of the image are displayed to the user as stereo auditory signals. For the study, the aid was implemented partly by using a personal computer, a computer graphics tablet, a digital-signal-processing board, and audio equipment. In addition, a Time-Multiplexer circuit was built to support inputs from two finger-probes which are made by using two styluses …  Lire la suite

1958 — the Mixing of Circular Jets.
    Résumé

The problem of mixing of subsonic circular jets with stationary fluid and with a stream at right angle has been studied. The present knowledge and conventional methods of approach to this problem are described. Applying Elrod's momentum diffusion theory of heat conduction to the mixing of a circular jet issued to a stationary fluid, the velocity distribution in the mixing region has been calculated and compared to Corrsin's experiment, and proved to be not quite satisfactory, especially at distance near the jet orifice. 1998 — Mechanisms of altered airway smooth muscle calcium signalling in airway hyperresponsiveness
    Résumé

The pathophysiological origins of airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) in asthma are unknown. The objectives of this thesis were to establish an association between AHR in an animal model of asthma and altered contractility of airway smooth muscle (ASM) and to elucidate changes in contractile signalling that could account for any observed differences in ASM contractility. The Fisher strain of rat is spontaneously hyperresponsive to methacholine inhalation challenge relative to Lewis rats. These inbred rat strains provide a model with which to study genetically-determined variations in airway smooth muscle that may underlie AHR. Fisher rats were found to be also hyperresponsive to …  Lire la suite

2015 — Using a 3D hand motion controller for reaching tasks in a powered wheelchair simulator
    Résumé

Reaching for objects is essential in powered wheelchair (PW) mobility. For PW users, learning how to navigate their PW to reach for objects safely, as in daily activities, is crucial to their quality of life. Training for such PW use is limited due to lack of dedicated space, time, or equipment. Addressing these issues, the McGill Immersive Wheelchair (miWe) simulator is a virtual reality (VR) system for teaching PW driving skills that runs on an ordinary computer. However, a practical and low-cost training tool for reaching tasks does not exist for the miWe or any other PW simulator. Objective: The …  Lire la suite

2000 — DNA replication in human transformed cells
    Résumé

Cell transformation and malignancy may modulate some regulatory parameters of DNA replication, resulting in altered features of initiation of DNA replication in these cells. The objectives of this research were to examine the possibility for tumor-specific DNA replication origins and activation of replication origins in human transformed cells. Conventional PCR was used to detect chromosomal activities of several known and putative replication origins in four human cell lines (HeLa, NSF, WI38 and SK-MG-1). Quantitative comparison of origin activities demonstrates that origins associated with c-myc and NOA3 were approximately twice as active in HeLa cells as in NSF cells. To test …  Lire la suite

2025 — Drift and stability of cortical representations of object categories in human visual areas
    Résumé

Sensory perception generates intrinsic cortical representations for sensory stimuli, which serve as the foundation for subsequent learning and memory processes. Typically, cortical representations drift over time, influenced by internal modulations from memory and attention and external adaptations to the changing context and environment. Cortical representations of isolated objects in artificial images have been explored within precise visual areas, but the representation and representational drift of naturalistic objects in natural scene images within distributed visual cortices remain unclear. In this thesis, we investigated the cortical representations of object categories by employing the Natural Scenes Dataset, a high-resolution, deeply sampled fMRI dataset …  Lire la suite

2023 — B-cell PlexinB2 is involved in germinal center reactions and antigen-specific antibody responses
    Résumé

Germinal centers (GCs) are specialized structures formed in secondary lymphoid tissues (SLTs) in response to foreign antigens and are crucial for mounting antigen-specific immune responses. GC reactions require interaction between several cell types in specialized microenvironments that drive B cell affinity maturation, class switching, and differentiation into memory B cells and antibody-secreting plasma cells. Originally described as an axonal-guidance molecule, PlexinB2 is expressed on multiple immune cell subsets including near ubiquitous expression on B cells, with specific upregulation on GC B cells. The functional significance of B-cell PlexinB2 expression is not fully elucidated in GC reactions. Here, we investigate the …  Lire la suite

1993 — Applying hypertext concepts to business modelling
    Résumé

The architectural modelling and dynamic analysis of business processes and information systems is an important and challenging task. A new methodology and system called Macrotec have been developed to comprehensively support this task. However, Macrotec in its pure form does not cope with all the informal documentation that is part of business modelling. Hypertext is well-suited as an approach for information management and presentation because of its generality, flexibility and ease of use. This work demonstrates the applicability of hypertext concepts to support the capturing, organization and presentation of informal documentation in business modelling. […]  Lire la suite

1996 — Drawing the dragon : testimonies to the reinvention of China
    Résumé

The accidental, or maybe not so accidental, equation of the Long $ rm lbrack TE rbrack$ with the dragon is a minor, yet in many ways symbolic, incident in Western European reinvention of China. This reinvention can be found in a wide variety of discourses, the authors of which range from Enlightenment philosophes to nineteenth-century political economists, to the recent Derrida, and from the even earlier Sir John Mandeville, Oliver Goldsmith, to Coleridge, to W. S. Landor and De Quincey. It covers all aspects of Chinese culture, including philosophy, religion, government, language, poetry, and folklore. This dissertation argues that the …  Lire la suite

2023 — Prediction of unplanned dilution in underground mines through machine learning techniques
    Résumé

The contribution of this thesis is divided into two folds. The first is the development of a prediction tool for uncontrollable dilution based on regression techniques, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Random Forest (RF), and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN). Using these techniques, different predictive models were developed based on a data set of 99 stopes from an underground mine in North America. The primary mining method applied in this mine is longitudinal retreat long-hole with variations in specific stopes. An accurate predictive dilution model will help improve the economic assessment of each stope. The second contribution of this thesis is identifying …

This thesis attempts to integrate the divorce outcome data concerning children within the stress and coping mechanisms paradigm. The effects of divorce on children are reviewed, as are the major constructs of stress-coping theory. A study is conducted to demonstrate the empirical utility of the theoretical integration of the two domains. The coping resources, styles and efforts of 71 elementary school children from divorced and intact homes were investigated. Data analyses demonstrated that children from divorced homes had lower levels of psychological coping resources, and less effective coping styles and efforts, thus sustaining the theoretical integration. Other significant results revealed …  Lire la suite

This study examines the concept of art education known as Discipline-based art education, (DBAE), from three vantage points. It begins by tracing the history and development of DBAE theory, and by examining its defining characteristics. It follows with a critical discussion of DBAE theory, specifically from within the context of multicultural education. The discussion then shifts to the realm of practice. The study describes a two week professional development program offered by the Minnesota DBAE Consortium, in Minneapolis, in the summer of 1995, and grounds the discussion in the results of questionnaires and interviews with six secondary school art specialists …  Lire la suite
