1952 — Somatic Chromosome Numbers in the Mouse.
    Résumé

Somatic tissue is the site of growth and differentiation, and the behaviour of its chromosomes bears directly on the problem of the genetic control of development. Constancy or variability of chromosome number can suggest the importance of whole chromosome complements to developmental stages of the cell and organism. In a diploid organism, polyploidy and haploidy are interesting deviations, but do not present such radical theoretical implications as would a widespread ocourrence of aneuploidy if established.  Lire la suite

1954 — Genetico-embryological studies on normal and cleft palates in mice.
    Résumé

Cleft palate is a common congenital anomaly, and it is dealt with by a variety of scientific groups. The medical profession is concerned about cleft palate because it is of sufficiently frequent occurrence to distress many people. Knowledge of the mechanisms and materials involved in palate development might be useful in designing preventive measures for prenatal care. The cleft palate condition is of interest to embryologists because it so often turns up in the list of defects caused by various teratogenic agents, and a better understanding of this defect would help in assessing the specific defects of a teratogenic substance.  Lire la suite

2010 — Myth busting: high-performance students rarely prefer to work alone
    Résumé

Through the topic of cooperative and collaborative learning, the need for refinement of definitions and expanded methodologies is identified. Past research narrowly focused on only one or two variables of interest, often ignored contextual variables, and has been limited by the use of forced-choice survey data. Research that adopts a social-learning or social-constructivist theoretical framework can help to overcome some of these limitations by considering the context of the learning environment and taking into account individual differences. Some research has moved in this direction, although more is needed that integrates such theories into both research questions and methodology. The current …  Lire la suite

2013 — Examining role diversification through dialog from small-group interactions during unit activities within inquiry-based teaching and learning classrooms

1961 — A synoptic climatology for British Columbia: some effects of mountainous terrain on observed weather.
    Résumé

The problem was to explain effects of mountain terrain, the Canadian Cordillera, on distributions of precipitation and temperature. Techniques from several fields of meteorology were blended with modern data processing in an attempt to overcome the sparseness and non-representativeness of weather observations. Atmospheric characteristics over British Columbia were found to be sharply differentiated by the direction of the flow at the 700 millibar level. Linearized two-dimensional mountain airflow theory was combined with relevant atmospheric characteristics to derive simple models of precipitation distributions over mountain ranges. These models were used to supplement observations to obtain improved charts of precipitation over the …  Lire la suite

    Résumé

The measurement of particle size 1s important industrially. Among other applications may be mentioned its use in the grinding of ores and in the manufacture of Pulp and Paper. Investigations have been in progress for some time in the Physical Chemistry department of McG111 University, their object being the measurement of particle size by a light absorption method. Recently a new apparatus and technique were proposed: this investigation deals, in the first place, with an examina tion of the scope and sensitivity of this new apparatus and with the relation of its results to those of a previous apparatus. Adsorption and desorption isotherms for water on standard cellulose were measured at two different temperatures, the heats of adsorption and desorption calculated and found tobe in qualitative agreement with previously measured heats of wetting as determined in an adiabatic calorimeter. It was definitely proved that the hysteresis which occurs in the adsorption and desorption of water by cellulose is not affected by the pressureof residual permanent gases. The apparent density of water adsorbed on standard cellulose at various concentrations was determined with ahigher degree of accuracy than had been previously obtained, by employing a modification of the apparatus used by other …  Lire la suite

1952 — the Cytology of Caryopsis Development in Triticum-Agropyron Amphiploids.
    Résumé

The occurrence of partial sterility in Triticum-Agropyron amphiploids has proved to be a major hindrance to the breeding ot hardy perennial wheat and hardy, large-seeded, soil-binding forage crops in Canada and the United States. Following the first successful cross between Triticum and Agropyron credited by Armstrong (1936) to Tzitzin in 1930, extensive hybridization programs to achieve the aforementioned objectives were undertaken in these two countries and in the U.S.S.R. Approximately thirty species of Agropyron were used in crossing with the wheats and in a summary of these, eight were listed by Smith (1942) as having been successfully hybridized. 2005 — Making a community : land policy in the Kawartha Lakes
    Résumé

Between the mid-eighteenth and the mid-nineteenth centuries, the Crown coordinated a revolution in land usage in the Kawartha Lakes, as elsewhere in the colony, through 'civilization' and land redistribution. Attempts to change native society and build settler communities did not quite unfold the way the government intended. 'Civilization' helped the Mississauga farm and taught skills that eased interaction with colonial society, but they continued to produce much of their food by traditional means. Speculation isolated settlers and made land acquisition more difficult, though some speculators provided essential services. Most immigrants bought land privately and many were not able to establish …  Lire la suite

[...] Expressions are now available for the overall rate of polymerization and the average degree of polymerization which can be compared directly with experimental data. However, these are not sufficient to determine unambiguously the individual rate constants of the different elementary steps, having only two equations and at least three unknowns. Other expressions are required which combine these same unknowns with directly measurable quantities. One of these is the distribution function of the polymer formed after different lengths of time under various experimental conditions. In view of a revival of interest in nuclear physics at McGill and in anticipation of the building of a cyclotron, a program of construction of auxiliary apparatus was started in 1936, in which the writer took part. Delays in the progress of the cyclotron scheme led to the suggestion that some project be undertaken using naturally radioactive sources. The appearance of the work of Bohr on the nature of nuclear reactions indicated that the scattering of alpha particles by the light nuclei might be expected to provide more immediate information concerning nuclear structure than had hitherto been supposed. The present study examines the use of formal and informal supervision as it relates to determining burnout in child welfare social workers. This was measured by using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Respondents were social workers in a small child protection agency. Using descriptive data and frequencies, results were used to focus directions for further research. The results indicate that only the length of formal supervision is significant in reducing emotional exhaustion in social workers (p < .05). Higher education levels were also seen as a protective factor against depersonalization (n = 16).  Lire la suite

The following study is an attempt to ascertain the most adequate way to understand the relationship in modernity between religion and technology. This relationship is first analyzed by looking at a common way in which technology has been categorized and discussed as representing the religion of modernity. The first chapter critically evaluates several popular and scholarly works which contain arguments for understanding that the modern world participates in some kind of 'religion of technology.' The inadequacies of these arguments are shown to arise from the problematic ways in which they invoke the meanings of both religion and technology. The suggestive …  Lire la suite

With the recent major earthquakes experienced around the world and the adverse impacts on population, infrastructure and economy, various countries are increasingly concerned with improving their preparedness and resilience to the threat of seismic hazards. To this end, the utilization of high-performance protective systems, such as dampers and seismic isolation, is becoming a common practice for the seismic design of new buildings as well as the seismic retrofit of existing ones. Such devices have the potential to achieve a building response modification during an earthquake and protect its structural and non-structural content. 2022 — The use of boron nitride nanotubes in non-thermal plasma catalytic synthesis of ammonia
    Résumé

As the world transitions to a carbon neutral society to fight climate change ammonia looks to be a promising alternative to carbon-based fuel sources and for hydrogen storage. Since 1914 ammonia has been synthesized at the industrial scale by the Haber-Bosch process which produces 2 tons of carbon dioxide per ton of ammonia. With the discovery that water electrolysis can be used to produce green hydrogen, only the invention of a small-scale energy efficient ammonia synthesis process is needed to produce decentralized green ammonia. Non-thermal plasma catalytic synthesis of ammonia is theorized to have half the energy requirement when fully …  Lire la suite

One of the many border apparatuses that migrants and refugees face include the myriad ‘cooperative’ measures between European states and perceived ‘transit’ and/or ‘origin’ states- a form of externalized borderwork- that seeks to regulate the flows of migrants perceived to be heading toward Europe. Externalizing these borders has relied on a variety of policy instruments whereby the mainstreaming of migration priorities with development activities abroad is emerging as a central European policy priority. This thesis explores this trend empirically through a focused case study of the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF-A) instrument to deconstruct (1) how we should …  Lire la suite

2023 — Experience-dependent changes in social bonding, auditory perception, and underlying neural activity in female songbirds
    Résumé

Social species, including humans, are highly motivated to form social bonds that are fundamental to their survival, cooperation, and reproduction. Communication governs the formation and maintenance of social relationships through the dynamic exchange between individuals sending and receiving communication signals. The ability to properly interpret such communication signals depends not only on the content and context of a signal, but also on individual experience. Social interactions throughout life appear to significantly shape perception, however, experience-dependent changes in perception remain poorly understood. The work presented in this thesis investigates the impact of experience, both during development and in adulthood, on auditory …  Lire la suite

1997 — Multiple modes of activation in phosphate diester hydrolysis
    Résumé

A dinuclear copper(II) complex has been investigated for promoting the transesterification of a phosphate diester, 2-hydroxypropyl-p-nitrophenyl phosphate (HPNP), that is a model for RNA. Rate enhancements of over 10$ sp5$ have been obtained at neutral pH over the background hydroxide rate. For this study the dinucleating ligand 2,6-bis ((bis(benzimidazolymethyl)amino)methyl) -p-cresol was prepared and the reactivity of the copper(II) complex for cleaving 2-hydroxypropyl-4-nitrophenyl phosphate was determined. The two metals were shown to be acting cooperatively by comparing the reactivity of the dinuclear complex to that of a mononuclear complex, copper(II) 2-(bi(benzimidazolymethyl)amino)methyl-4,6-dimethylphenol. For atmospheric aerosol, many fundamental microphysical questions still remain which contribute to these uncertainties. To improve our understanding of atmospheric aerosol at a fundamental level, we employ experimental and modelling methods to investigate the microphysical properties of single aerosol particles. In the atmosphere, organic aerosol can exist in highly viscous and glassy states. In these phases, diffusion becomes limited. One consequence of this is that water uptake and loss in response …  Lire la suite
