2019 — Foamy oil viscosity measurement
    Résumé

The rheological studies of gas-oil dispersion are essential for understanding the foamy oil flow behaviours related to high production rates in many heavy oil reservoirs. The viscosity of gas-oil dispersion is one of the critical parameters that influence the recovery in solution gas drive process. Only a few laboratory experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the effects of live oil viscosity and foam quality on the apparent viscosity of the foamy oil during the depressurization process. As for gas-in-oil dispersion, the continuous phase is the supersaturated live oil during the depressurization process. It is essential to quantify the …  Lire la suite

2019 — Experimentally Testing the Tree-Factor Structure of Socio-Emotional Comparisons
    Résumé

Evolutionary theories posit that comparisons to others are essential in determining one’s relative position in a social hierarchy. Social comparison information can help guide behaviour in several ways, but has been associated with different adverse psychological issues (e.g., depression; stress). However, a purely cognitive view of social comparisons ignores the emotional content that usually accompanies them. A novel construct named socioemotional comparisons (SEC) is theorized to bridge the cognitionemotion gap. SEC is defined as experiences of negative affect following a subjective evaluation of unfair or unjust disadvantage compared to another. These comparisons are represented by three factors: malicious envy, low …  Lire la suite

2019 — Examining Health Anxiety and Anxiety About Fetal Health During Pregnancy
    Résumé

Background: Health anxiety refers to excessive preoccupation or worry about one’s health. The experience of health anxiety during pregnancy is unclear. The limited existing research provides mixed results regarding the impact of pregnancy on health anxiety (e.g., Kowalyk, Hadjistavropoulos, & Jones, 2009; Savron et al., 1989). Purpose: The current investigation was designed to assess health anxiety in pregnant women, examine the relationship between health anxiety and fetal health anxiety, and examine the relationships between health anxiety, fetal health anxiety, associated constructs (i.e., general anxiety, depression, anxiety sensitivity, intolerance of uncertainty), and core health cognitions. In addition, inductive content analysis of …  Lire la suite

2019 — Trunk Muscle Activation Patterns During the Barbell Back Squat with Progressive Load and Instability
    Résumé

Low back injuries are common in sports that involve repetitive/high spinal loading. The muscular system is largely responsible for maintaining proper spinal posture and efficiently transferring load during movement to protect the spine from excessive strain. Atrophy/reduced recruitment of specific trunk muscles are associated with low back pain, suggesting changes in recruitment patterns and compensations that may lead to additional stress on spinal structures. Athletes involved in high loading sports (e.g., football) engage in strength training programs that typically involve high load compound movements to increase strength (e.g., back squat) and stability training. It may prove effective to increase the …  Lire la suite

    Résumé

The aim of the thesis is to study asymptotic properties of estimators for the Binomial distribution by the Method of Moments and an application of these estimators to evaluate characteristics of the neuromuscular junction (synapse). To achieve these goals it is necessary to solve the following problems: i. Derivation of estimates of parameters of Binomial distribution by the Method of Moments; ii. Derivation of the parameters of the asymptotic normality by the Delta-method; iii. Comparison of the derived asymptotic with the true probabilistic characteristics of the estimators by the method of statistical simulations; iv. Estimation of parameters m and p …  Lire la suite

2019 — Efficacy of Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Following An Acute Coronary Event: A Randomized Controlled Trial
    Résumé

Depression and anxiety are common among people who have experienced an acute coronary event (e.g., heart attack). Multidisciplinary cardiac rehabilitation programs often focus on reducing risk factors associated with future cardiac events (e.g., smoking, lipid management), however, mental health interventions are not routinely available following significant coronary events. The present study sought to explore the efficacy and acceptability of an Internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy program (Cardiac Wellbeing Course) for managing depression and anxiety symptoms among participants who experienced an acute coronary event. Participants were randomized to an intervention (n = 25) or waiting-list control group (n = 28). Symptoms were …  Lire la suite

Advancement of technology in the field of medical science is providing promising results in this modern era. Intelligent systems designed especially for this sector not only help doctors to solve complex situations but also take comparatively lesser computational time which can be a really important factor as longer time in critical cases may lead to death of a patient. These days, everyone experiences long waiting time to see a doctor. It would be really desirable if an Intelligent System makes the work easy for a doctor by giving accurate decisions after processing patient’s data, reducing examination time for the current …  Lire la suite

Mild traumatic brain injury, such as concussion, can lead to physiological impairments. Although these changes in physiology are not always characterized by symptoms, they can be reflective of how the body is attempting to adjust and adapt to these consequences. Cannabidiol can aid with some of the physiological and symptomatic changes due to concussion, and the therapeutic properties of cannabidiol can be enhanced when administered with other cannabinoids, specifically, tetrahydrocannabinol. These cannabinoids can work together on the endogenous cannabinoid system within an individual, thereby influencing their effects on cerebrovascular and cardiovascular physiology. Specifically, the psychoactivity of the cannabinoids can regulate …  Lire la suite

2019 — Self-Compassion Training for Individuals With Social Anixety Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial
    Résumé

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is an impairing disorder that is often chronic because many individuals meeting diagnostic criteria avoid seeking treatment due to the stigma associated with receiving mental health care (Olfson et al., 2000). Self-compassion is the ability to offer oneself kindness and compassion in response to failure, suffering, or insecurity (Neff, 2003a). Research evidence has supported the effectiveness of self-compassion training programs at improving psychological well-being in general community samples (e.g., Neff & Germer, 2013); nevertheless, research is needed regarding the effectiveness of self-compassion training in clinical samples. The current randomized controlled trial was designed to (a) examine …  Lire la suite

This research has also found that people are generally capable of making intuitive between-group comparisons, which involve comparing groups of data and making judgments on these data. However, people also tend to exhibit a bias in such comparisons against normatively integrating the withingroup variability (e.g., standard deviation; SD) of the groups with the between-group variability (e.g., mean differences) while making between-group comparisons. This can lead to errors in judgment, …  Lire la suite

2019 — Modeling The Fluid Flow in Low-Permeability Unconventional Reservoirs Across Scales
    Résumé

In the last decade low-permeability unconventional reservoirs (i.e., shale and tight formations) become an increasingly important source of oil and especially gas supply in the world. Low permeability reservoirs are characterized with small grain sizes (m), low permeability (< 0.1mD), small porosity (<10%) and high total organic carbon (TOC) (0.8-20wt%). The productivity of shale and tight reservoirs heavily depends on the interaction between reservoir rock matrix and multi-stage fractured horizontal wells (MFHWs). To predict and optimize unconventional reservoirs’ production behavior, this study tries to model the fluid flow across scales-from the pore scale to the reservoir- scale. This reflects thousands of years of patriarchal Confucian gender prejudice and oppression of women. By a fortuitous opportunity, in the summer of 2007, Dr. Wang Lin asked me to help with her research on a Chinese matriarchal society – the Mosuo community. I was impressed by their unique culture, tradition and social structure, and decided one day to make a …  Lire la suite

2019 — Thermodynamic Phase Behavior and Miscibility Studies of Confined Fluids in Tight Formations
    Résumé

In this study, the nanoscale-extended theoretical models and experimental nanofluidic system are developed to calculate and measure the thermodynamic phase behavior and miscibility of confined pure and mixing fluids in tight formations. First, a new nanoscale-extended equation of state (EOS) is developed to calculate the phase behavior of confined fluids in nanopores, based on which two correlations are modified to predict the shifts of critical properties. The nanoscale-extended EOS model has been proven to accurately calculate the phase behaviour of confined fluids. The thermodynamic phase behavior of confined fluids in nanopores are substantially different from those in bulk phase. The …  Lire la suite

2019 — Engagement Paper for the Animated Film MASK
    Résumé

Mask is a stop motion animation film that aims to discuss the impact of emigration on the newcomer as a subject within established societies. The story takes place within an imagined setting, in which a mask is the only official signifier of one’s identity. However, the story still reflects my personal experience in terms of language proficiency and a newcomer’s adjustments to living in Canada. Because of the film’s allegorical characteristics, one of my expectations was to have a diversity of interpretations of the film depending on the viewers’ personal background and experience, rather than the meaning being derived just …  Lire la suite

2019 — Decomposition of Certain Representations Into A Direct Sum of Indecomposable Representations
    Résumé

Representations of quivers and posets are produced by persistent homology. It is possible to decompose such representations into direct sums of indecomposable representations. The indecomposable representations of quivers and posets that arise from one dimensional persistent homology are well understood. However, the same is not true for multidimensional persistent homology. This thesis finds such a list of indecomposable representations for a very simple case of a poset that can arise from multidimensional persistent homology, and proves that it is possible to decompose a representation of such a poset into a direct sum of these indecomposables.  Lire la suite

2019 — Enhanced Heavy Oil Recovery Using CO2 Huff 'N' Puff Process
    Résumé

CO2 based enhanced oil recovery methods, such as continuous CO2 injection, intermittent CO2 injection, water-alternating CO2 injection, and CO2 huff 'n' puff, are successfully implemented in heavy oil reservoirs. Among them, the CO2 huff 'n' puff method has been proved as an applicable recovery method. Although many previous researches were conducted on the CO2 huff 'n' puff process applied in heavy oil reservoirs, some technical issues are still not investigated, such as non-equilibrium phase behaviors of foamy oil flow, CO2 diffusion into heavy oil, and the production performance in CO2 huff 'n' puff process coupled with non-equilibrium phase behaviors and …  Lire la suite

2019 — Transformational Learning Experiences: Changing Relationships and Comfort Zones
    Résumé

The purpose of this study was to explore how social and familial relationships are challenged, altered, or sustained following a transformational learning experience. In particular, I explored how students in a university graduate education course that used a transformational approach, experienced changes. The course, Participatory Methodologies and Approaches to Research, Facilitation, and Community Engagement, was offered at the University of Regina in the Summer of 2015. The study focused on the ways three students, as study participants, navigated their way through new and existing social networks and how the transformational experience altered pre-conceived ideas and perceptions. The qualitative study used …  Lire la suite
