2021 — Lead Corrosion Investigation and Control in the Drinking Water Distribution System in Several Cities in CanadaRésumé
Drinking water is the fundamental element for the human to live. The quality of drinking water will significantly influence human health. However, some heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium, copper, and iron etc. in the drinking water have been reported to exceed the regulation. Due to the adverse effect of heavy metals on the health of human beings, heavy metal corrosion control becomes more and more critical and has attracted the attention of many researchers. In 2019, the Health Canada guideline of lead concentration for drinking water in Canada decreased from 10 𝜇g/L to 5 𝜇g/L. Many Canadian cities … Lire la suite

2021 — Small Modular Reactor Site Selection in Saskatchewan: Site Slection Risk Assessment with Focue on Surface Water Availability and Dissolved Strontium MonitoringRésumé
One of the objectives of the research is to provide a province-wide assessment of Saskatchewan to quantitatively identify optimal SMR site locations that are capable of providing adequate surface water for the lifecycle of an SMR power generating facility. Currently, there is limited data on water resources in the province. Therefore, reports on the current and future water related stresses in the province, completed for the Government of Saskatchewan, (along with a water risk assessment interactive map) are used in the province-wide site assessment. Another objective in this work is to develop a model that aids in the assessment of … Lire la suite

2021 — Experimental and Numerical Evaluation of Enzyme-Assisted Hot Waterflooding Performance in a Heavy Oil ReservoirRésumé
In the past few decades, huge heavy oil reserves have been discovered around the world. Due to its high carbon intensity and high viscosity, heavy oil recovery after a primary production process remains still low. In this case, various enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques have been developed and utilized to exploit such huge heavy oil reserves with limited success. At present, the commonly used methods for heavy oil recovery are based on thermal and solvent injections, which have significant limitations such as high energy consumptions, large CO2 emissions, and low production rates. On the other hand, the popularity of enzymes … Lire la suite

2021 — Development of Multi-Layer Soil Systems for Wastewater Treatment in Rural AreasRésumé
This dissertation provides a comprehensive study on the development and application of multi-layer soil systems (MLSs) for wastewater treatment in rural areas. Considerable research efforts have been made in investigating the feasibility, compatibility, and capability of developed systems by considering the risks and enviroeconomic impacts under uncertain conditions. Likewise, the interactive effects of environmental factors and relationships of microbial function on pollutant removal have been further explored. In addition to this, fabricating emerging materials for enhancing the system performance, as well as toxic effects of such fabricated materials, have also been taken into account. An integrated gravity-driven MLS system has … Lire la suite

2021 — A Multi-omics Study of Human Mitochondrial Proteins During NeurogenesisRésumé
Mitochondria are double membrane organelles in eukaryotic cells, and play vital roles in neurogenesis. Disruptions of mitochondrial functions may lead to neurodegenerative disorders. Yet, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. To elucidate the dynamic changes of transcriptomes during neurogenesis, the single cell RNA sequencing experiments were conducted on both cultured human embryonic carcinoma stem cells and and retinoic acid-induced differentiated neuron-like cells. The systematic analysis framework I have established revealed significant expression alternations between cell states, persistence of heterogeneity in differentiated neuron-like cells, and dynamic modeling during the differentiation, and also identified mitochondrial proteins as novel neuronal markers. To elucidate … Lire la suite

2021 — Geology of Sub-Salt Carbonate Rocks in the Rozhkovsky Structure, Northern Precaspian Basin, Kazakhstan: Implications for the Formation of Carbonate Reservoir in a Relatively Closed Diagenetic SystemRésumé
Sub-salt carbonate successions in the Precaspian Basin host several world-famous oil/gas fields along the basin margin. The Early Carboniferous Sub-salt carbonate rocks are associated with the Rozhkovsky structure near the northern margin of the Precaspian Basin. These carbonate successions are dominantly shallow-marine carbonate sediments that are covered with widespread Permian salt deposits. This study contributes to the reservoir preservation in a relatively closed diagenetic system, which developed in a ramp setting during early Carboniferous time. Through detailed petrographic studies of 370 m of cores and 316 rock samples (as thin sections), nine lithofacies were identified within the study area. These … Lire la suite

2021 — A Two-Parameter Lindley-Binomial Distribution: Properties and ApplicationsRésumé
The binomial distribution is a common and well known distribution that many situations and applications of binomial distribution can be found. In the real life anything that can be thought of a success or a failure can be considered as a Binomial distribution. However, this kind of instances does not fit to binomial distribution well at all the time. Therefore, in order to improve the ability of fitting various models, two-parameter Lindley distri- bution is used to combine with binomial distribution. In this thesis, a new generalized discrete distribution, that is named as two-parameter Lindley-binomial distribution, is introduced by compounding … Lire la suite

2021 — Study on the Binary Interactions of Gas, Brine and Reservoirs Porous MediaRésumé
As several operations in the reservoir engineering may involve gas injection or production, such as gas reservoir development, enhanced oil/gas recovery (EOR/EGR), CO2 capture and sequestration, and underground gas storage, etc., the study on the interactions of gas, brine and porous medium is important. Three typical binary interactions are discussed in this study including the mutual dissolution of gas and brine, the adsorption of pure gases and gas mixtures in the reservoir porous media, and the salt precipitation induced by brine in the reservoir porous media. For the mutual dissolution of gas and brine, this work improves a new theoretical … Lire la suite

2021 — Experimental and Modelign of Foam Physics in Porous MediaRésumé
Foam is a dispersion of gas in a liquid, where the liquid is continuous and part of the gas is made discontinuous by thin liquid films (lamellae) (Hirasaki and Lawson, 1985). Foam promises to substantially improve reservoir sweep in gas-injection enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects. Predictive modeling efforts are hindered by many complex rheological characteristics shared by foams, including a yield stress, non-Newtonian viscosity, finite shear modulus and slip at the wall, etc. (Reinelt and Kraynik, 1989). This dissertation focuses on experimental and numerical simulations on foam physics across multiple scales. The first objective is to develop ultimately a mechanistic, … Lire la suite

2021 — The Application of Fluid Phase Behavior for Bakken Shale ReservoirRésumé
Shale gas and oil has been explored and developed in the recent years. Because of its complex pore structure and reservoir characteristics, fluid properties and mechanisms of fluid flow are always difficult but important topics which need to be recognized and described. It is known that properties of fluid in the shale reservoir will be affected by confined environment, and fluid flow in shale reservoir does not always follow Darcy’s Law such as turbulent flow in the shale gas reservoir. Consequently, it is a significant study for calculating modified properties and describing fluid flow mechanisms within shale reservoirs. Flash calculation … Lire la suite
