2023 — Efficacy of an Internet-delivered self-compassion intervention in preventing depressive relapse and recurrence: A randomized controlled trial in a clinical sampleRésumé
Depression is a prevalent and burdensome mental health condition. Unfortunately, depression is chronic and recurrent, with a lifetime average of four to five episodes. Although evidence supports the efficacy of self-compassion interventions for a range of psychological disorders (Ferrari et al., 2019), research on scalable forms of compassion-based interventions for recurrent depression remains scarce. The primary purpose of this two-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to examine the efficacy of a 6-week internet-delivered, self-directed self-compassion intervention in preventing depressive relapse and recurrence over a 12-month period in a clinical sample of adults with a history of depression. The efficacy of … Lire la suite

2023 — Implementation of spiking neural network on field-programmable gate array for image classificationRésumé
This thesis concerns the Spiking Neural Network (SNN) implementation on a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). SNN is a particular Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) form. An SNN has similar features as an ANN, but an SNN has a different information system that will allow SNN to have higher energy efficiency than an ANN. This thesis aims to design an SNN with low accuracy loss and high power efficiency that can be easily implemented on an FPGA. The theory of ANN, the coding schemes of SNN, the training methods of SNN and the implementation methods of SNN on FPGA are investigated in … Lire la suite

2023 — Characterization of Cenomanian-early Turonian bentonites in southwestern Saskatchewan through lithostratigraphy and chemostratigraphy analysisRésumé
Volcanic eruptions can disperse tephra over a wide area, and may result in deposition of ash far from their sources. For example, ash from the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens volcano in Washington State was observed falling upon Regina, Saskatchewan. Bentonite is a name for widely distributed beds of altered ash that have the potential to be used as isochronous horizons in lithostratigraphic correlation, much in the same way that tephrochronology is applied to young volcanic deposits. Numerous bentonite horizons are preserved within Late Cretaceous strata of western Canada and northern USA, and several widespread layers delineate unit or … Lire la suite

2023 — A theory of spatial granular computingRésumé
This thesis proposes a theory of spatial granular computing. A granule is composed of one or more atomic granules, and the rationality of this definition is expounded from four aspects: simplicity, applicability, measurability, and visualization. A projection is introduced, which is a one-to-one mapping from granules to points in an nD unit hypercube. Based on this, some basic questions of spatial granular computing are discussed. When discussing the rough set models from the perspective of micro knowledge space, all the models can be easily applied to incomplete information systems and continuous information systems as well. For any equivalence granule in … Lire la suite

2023 — The effects of chronic stress on allocentric versus egocentric spatial memoryRésumé
Spatial navigation is a skill that is critically dependent upon an organism’s ability to remember object locations and orient themselves in an environment. Two strategies commonly examined in spatial memory research are allocentric (ALLO) and egocentric (EGO). Individuals using an ALLO strategy orient with respect to a cognitive map of distal environmental boundaries, while those using an EGO strategy orient with respect to themselves and singular proximal landmark cues. Stress affects spatial memory, but it is unclear whether one strategy more than the other enhances processing in the context of chronic stress. The present study examined the effects of chronic … Lire la suite

2023 — Alerting the nation to famine: The role of the media in exposing Canadians to the Ethiopian famine of 1984Résumé
This thesis explores the coverage by English language media in Canada, specifically that of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), the Globe and Mail, and Maclean’s, of the Ethiopian Famine of 1984, and how that coverage generated considerable interest among the Canadian public, including among members of the Canadian government. The CBC’s reporting of the famine in its evening news on 1 November 1984 galvanized many Canadians. Even newly elected Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney, and his Secretary of State for External Affairs, Joe Clark, have admitted to being influenced by the reports of the famine on the CBC. Earlier reporting on … Lire la suite

2023 — Potassium sulphate production from an aqueous sodium sulphate waste from lead acid battery recyclingRésumé
In Canada and around the globe, government and regulatory agencies have implemented regulations to regulate the industries' amount and concentration of waste disposed into the environment. The regulations are enacted and executed to protect human, animal or plant health or the environment and other micro-organisms that form part of the ecosystem. Hence, there is a high industrial demand for value-added waste management methodologies, safer management, and disposition of industrial wastes. Also, the high demand for renewable energy sources necessitates the demand for energy storage technologies. Because of the comparative advantages that lead acid batteries have over other energy storage technologies, … Lire la suite
