2016 — Pain Communication in Couples with Chronic PainRésumé
Having a partner with chronic pain (CP) can lead to relationship strain. In couples, poor verbal or non-verbal communication about pain is associated with increased disability (Cano, Johansen, & Geisser, 2004), mental health issues (Kiecolt-Glaser & Newton, 2001), and negative emotions in partners (Miaskowski, Zimmer, Barret, Dibble, & Wallhagen, 1997). There is limited research directly examining pain communication in couples as pain is occurring. Existing CP research in couples has mostly been based on retrospection and self-report, and such research has tended to not include both partners. This investigation was designed to extend our understanding of pain communication in couples. … Lire la suite

2012 — Development and Evaluation of a Pain Assessment Training Program for Long-Term Care StaffRésumé
Pain underassessment among older adults living in long-term care has been recognized as an ethical concern and an area requiring further attention. It is estimated that up to 80% of older adults in long-term care suffer from pain (Charlton, 2005). Several researchers have identified discrepancies in the quality of pain assessment and management provided to individuals with and without dementia. Inadequate pain education for staff at the formal training level and through continuing education programs is a possible factor contributing to this problem (Watt-Watson et al., 2004). This study was designed to address the dearth of education through the development … Lire la suite

2020 — Interactive Image Retrieval, Organization, and Exploration Within TwitterRésumé
Most social media services allow users to share photos. Specifically, with the use of mobile phones, social media users are now able to share photos easily which is leading to the creation of a huge amount of image content. It is difficult to search for specific images within large image collections. Images have textual content associated with them. Users can search for images with textual queries, where the search is performed only on the textual content of the social media post. However, searching within textual information is not sufficient for retrieving images whose visual content is relevant to the query. … Lire la suite

2023 — Attentional blink: Restricted attention necessitates conscious perceptionRésumé
In attention capture studies, a target stimulus is poorly identified when presented 200-500 ms after the presentation of a task-relevant distractor, a phenomenon referred to as the attentional blink. Evidence regarding the necessity of consciously perceiving the distractor in yielding an attentional blink is inconsistent in the literature. The goal of this thesis was to clarify under which conditions conscious perception of a distractor is necessary to trigger an attentional blink. It was hypothesized that the presence of a blink would vary according to the predictions of the novel restricted attention hypothesis, such that additional conditions must be met for … Lire la suite

2024 — Forecasting CO₂ emissions and identifying key CCUS factors for achieving net-zero targets in the North American cement, iron, and steel industriesRésumé
Emissions of pollutants and their consequences on the atmosphere have received special attention from international organizations in recent years due to the climate crisis previewed in the next decades. In this regard, Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions produced in industrial sectors is one of the most concerning compounds because of its impact on global warming and climate change. International organizations have emphasized the necessity of creating a plan to gradually reduce the concentration of this pollutant in the atmosphere. This study employs multi-objective mathematical models combined with machine learning algorithms to predict CO₂ emission trends and evaluate mitigation techniques on Cement … Lire la suite

2021 — Facilitators and Barriers to Technology Adoption: An Automated Pain Detection System for Long-Term CareRésumé
Canada’s population is aging at an unprecedented rate. That is, older adults—defined as persons who are at least 65 years of age—make up a rapidly growing segment of the population. With age as one of the strongest risk factors for the development of chronic health conditions, the Canadian healthcare system will be met with increasingly complex challenges in providing care as its population ages. The co-occurrence of dementia and pain among long-term care (LTC) residents, for example, presents a significant challenge since residents with dementia are less likely able to self-report their pain. Furthermore, despite the increased prevalence of—and greater … Lire la suite

2016 — Experiencing Pain Alone and in the Presence of Others: A Study of Older AdultsRésumé
Pain, defined as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage” (Merskey & Bogduk, 1994, p. 210), is a central clinical issue among older persons. Many older adults undergo several painful medical and surgical procedures, yet it remains uncertain whether social support influences an older person’s experience and expression of pain when undergoing such procedures. This study, therefore, was aimed to investigate the role of social support in pain experiences and expressions among community-dwelling older adults. The study was carried out within the framework of the communications model … Lire la suite

2016 — Auction Shill Detection Framework Based on SWMRésumé
Online auctioning has attracted serious in-auction fraud, such as shill bidding, given the huge amount of money involved and the anonymity of users. Due to the fact that shill bidding is difficult to detect as well as to prove, very few researchers have been successful in designing online shill detection systems that can be adopted by auction sites. We introduce an efficient SVM-based two-phased In-Auction Fraud Detection (IAFD) model. This supervised model is first trained offline for identifying ‘Normal’ and ‘Suspicious’ bidders. For this process, we identify a collection of the most relevant fraud classification features rather than uncertain or … Lire la suite

2020 — Performance of Bootstrap Confidence Region For Binomial Distribution With Unknown Parameters p and mRésumé
The goal of this research is to find out the Performance of the bootstrap confidence region of a binomial distribution with unknown parameters. The research is designed as follow: The first step is to estimate unknown parameters m and p from binomial distribution. In my case, I focus on method of moment to estimate. Since these estimators do not have moments of all orders, I cannot obtain the mean, variance, and covariance for these estimators. Thus, the Delta Method is used to derive the asymptotic normality of the joint distribution of the Method of Moments estimators. After finding the estimators … Lire la suite

2024 — Statistical methods and analysis with real-life dataRésumé
The goal of this research contains three major parts. We start with finding out the parameter uncertainty of cost and utility parameters in economic evaluations. There is a framework providing some general guidance to interpret the levels of parameter uncertainty of the probabilistic analysis in economic evaluations. Given that this framework may not fully address underlying causes for the uncertainty, we sought to extend it for two specific scenarios. We provide the mathematical interpretations and conducted simulation studies for two scenarios. We further discussed the implications of our findings for the economic modelling. In addition to qualitative categorization of uncertainty … Lire la suite

2018 — Actionable Three-Way DecisionsRésumé
In this thesis, we analyze both the trisecting and acting aspects of three-way decisions. In an evaluation based model of three-way decisions, there are two steps: trisecting and acting. The trisecting step constructs three regions based on an evaluation func- tion and a pair of thresholds. The acting step adopts proper strategies to deal with objects in these regions. For the trisecting step, this thesis examines statistical interpretations for the con- struction of three regions. The interpretations rely on an understanding that the middle region consists of normal or typical instances in a population, while two side regions consist of, … Lire la suite

2021 — Analysis, Modeling and Enhancement of LTE-A Heterogeneous Networks in a Real-World EnvironmentRésumé
During the past decades, cellular networks have been greatly developed. An increasing number of devices such as tablets and mobile phones are connected to cellular networks. The heterogeneous networks (HetNets) play an important role in serving users with different requirements and huge data demands. LTE-A HetNets have been extensively studied for many years. However, most research works have focused on theoretic studies of LTE-A HetNets. Only a few researchers have a chance to access and study the actual HetNets. A big gap exists between theories and actual applications for cellular networks. It is essential to understand the mechanism of HetNets … Lire la suite

2015 — Comparing Dependent Correlations for Ordinal DataRésumé
The methods and application for analyzing categorical ordinal data have matured in statistical inferences during recent decades of development. The methods include logistic regression models, odds ratios, inferential methods by using chi-squared tests of independence and conditional independence. On the basis, this thesis presents an analysis of equality of dependent correlations with the longitudinal ordinal vari- able. Eight test statistics, Dunn and Clark's Z, Steriger's Z, Meng's Z, Hitter's Z, Hotelling's t, William's t and William's modified t per Hendrickson, for comparing dependent correlations are presented. The results via simulation studies indicate that the choice as to which test statistics … Lire la suite

2017 — Distinguishing Linear Sets and Pattern Languages With Membership ExamplesRésumé
In Computational Learning Theory, a binary concept is often represented by a set of pairs (x; l), where x varies over a set of instances known as a universe or instance space, and l is a label, either "+" or "-", indicating whether or not x belongs to the concept. This thesis will consider a type of machine learning task known as supervised learning, where an algorithm M is fed with a set of labelled data for a target concept belonging to a given class of concepts, and M produces a hypothesis function that is used to accurately predict the … Lire la suite

2012 — Comparative Ecology of Three Sympatric Snake Species in Southwestern SaskatchewanRésumé
My research focused on the comparative ecology of three sympatric snake species which are of conservation concern in southwestern Saskatchewan: eastern yellow-bellied racers (Coluber constrictor flaviventris), a Threatened species in Canada; bullsnakes (Pituophis catenifer sayi), Data Deficient, and; prairie rattlesnakes (Crotalus viridis), yet to be assessed, but considered a high priority candidate. Few studies on snake ecology have collected data for multiple species at the same site, a factor potentially important for understanding resource partitioning and competition between sympatric species. Furthermore, identifying which resources elicit competition may be critical for the conservation and management of endangered species. I used radio-telemetry, … Lire la suite

2022 — Earthquake Resilience Framework for Stormwater Pipe Infrastructure SystemRésumé
Stormwater pipes' infrastructure is the fundamental requirement of a nation, and because of disasters, several pipes can get damaged. Consequently, evaluating resilience for stormwater infrastructure facing an earthquake hazard is an essential duty for any city because it outlines the capability to be resilient and recover from the disaster after the hazard event. The resilience quantification process needs various data types from various sources, and uncertainty and partial data may be included. Inadequate literature is available concentrating on stormwater pipe infrastructure resilience; nevertheless, the available literature has not included the beforementioned uncertainty and incomplete data. Consequently, this study recommends a … Lire la suite

2015 — The Health Belief Model and Women’s Adherence to a Cardiac Rehabilitation ProgramRésumé
The purpose of this study was to identify health beliefs that affect adherence rates to prescribed exercise programming for women based on medically diagnosed cardiacrelated conditions. Research indicates that despite the documented health benefits of a Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) program, only a small percentage of eligible women are being enrolled and adhering to a CR program. This study sought to better understand participation and adherence rates of women using the Health Belief Model (HBM; Becker, 1974) as a theoretical framework. Qualitative research methods were used in this study. Five female patients who were enrolled in a cardiac rehabilitation program for … Lire la suite

2013 — The Effects of natural Gas Development on Density, Reproductive Success and Nest Survival of Grassland Songbirds in South-Western SaskatchewanRésumé
Natural gas development is currently expanding in south-western Saskatchewan and may be threatening the quality of the remaining grassland habitat. The effects of natural gas development on grassland birds are poorly understood but are often species-specific and vary across the species’ range. The purpose of my research is to (1) quantify aspects of grassland songbird breeding biology and (2) determine the effects of natural gas development on density and reproductive success of grassland songbirds. I found and monitored 392 nests of 7 species of grassland songbirds, including Chestnut-collared Longspur (Calcarius ornatus), Vesper Sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus), Sprague’s Pipit (Anthus spragueii), Savannah … Lire la suite

2021 — Hermeneutic Phenomenological Inquiry: Risk and Protective Factors for the Left-Behind Children in the Northern Shaanxi Province, China With Gender ComparisonRésumé
The rapid industrialization and uneven regional development of China over the past few decades have forced a large number of young and middle-aged people in rural areas and small towns to leave their hometown and undertake burdensome manual jobs in urban areas. Many of them have become parents. Moreover, limited by the Chinese national residency registration system and the higher cost of living, it is hardly possible for migrant children to be incorporated in urban public education. These facts contribute to the widespread Chinese left-behind children phenomenon. Shaanxi province as one of the impoverished provinces in China is no exception … Lire la suite

2023 — Algal control and prevention technologies for Lake Diefenbaker irrigation canalsRésumé
The Lake Diefenbaker irrigation project makes up an extensive 500 km of canals that officially began in July 2020. These canals contain pumps for increased and enhanced irrigation throughout southern and central Saskatchewan. However, the efficiency of the canals is hindered by the growth of filamentous algae. The filamentous algae are a nuisance and block pumps, making it difficult for water to be distributed to all the desired locations within the province. Currently, a synthetic chemical, Magnacide H, is utilized to control the growth of the algae at the cost of approximately $1 million per year, which is high cost. … Lire la suite

2015 — A Voxel-Based Approach to the Real-Time Simulation of Sands and SoilsRésumé
Natural terrains composed of sands, soils, and other types of granular materials are subject to deformation and alteration when in uenced by interactions with humans and machines. These interactions include excavation and earthmoving activities such as digging, pushing, lifting, dumping, and piling. Simulating the deformation of sand and soil- lled terrains in interactive computer graphics applications is challenging due to the ne-grained and highly dynamic nature of these materials. In this thesis, we present the theoretical background, algorithms, and implementation details for a voxel-based terrain rendering system that simulates large, dynamic bodies of sands and soils in real-time 3D graphics … Lire la suite

2012 — Attachment Orientation, Affect Regulation, and Coping Styles in Young Adults with Persistent, Transient, or Absent History of Deliberate Self-HarmRésumé
The prevalence of deliberate self-harm (DSH) is on the rise, making clinicians more likely than ever to encounter DSH in their clinical practice (Klonsky, 2007; Nock, 2009), and consequently making research that informs such clinical practice increasingly vital. Past research has neglected to adequately explore the differences between absent, persistent, and transient DSH histories and the factors related to increased DSH frequency. Attachment orientation, coping styles, and affect regulation have been implicated as important to adjustment and psychopathology; however, the role of these constructs in DSH and specifically whether they can be successfully applied to explain the differences between DSH … Lire la suite

2015 — Recovery from Deliberate Self-Harm: Perspectives from Those Who Have Survived and From Those Who Have HelpedRésumé
Interventions for adolescents who engage in deliberate self-harm are notoriously challenging and negligibly effective. Self-harming adolescents often keep their behaviours a secret, do not see their self-harm as a problem, and rely heavily on parents and friends for support and assistance in help-seeking. In fact, social support, particularly via friends and family members, has been identified as one of the most crucial components to self-harm recovery. Although parents and friends are vital to help-seeking and recovery, little is known about the lived experience of parents and friends in supporting someone who self-harms. What little is known indicates that parents and … Lire la suite

2024 — Enseigner entre les lignes en Saskatchewan française (1905-1968)Résumé
Based on an analysis of historical school textbooks, exams and other educational resources, this study aims to identify the nature of linguistic representations transposed into the school materials used in French-speaking Saskatchewan between the creation of the province in 1905 and the advent of immersions schools in 1968. The threat of anglicism and English (in general), the “soft” pronunciation of French Canadians, the natural interweaving of language and history and the awareness that there is a formal level of language to adopt were concerns at the time. The line between the imitation of a distinguished linguistic model inspired by Quebec’s … Lire la suite

2019 — Family Album - MOJ AlbumRésumé
Family Album ↔ Moj Album is an experimental memoir that uses a multi-genre structure—poetry, prose, and photography—to examine what it means to witness atrocity. I was born in the middle of the Yugoslavian Civil War (also referred to as the Bosnian War) in 1994, and my parents and I immigrated to Canada a year later in 1995. Because both of my parents lived through this war, and I was born into it, I have memories surface that I can’t explain, memories that reveal an unknown past that demands my attention. These so-called memories engage with what Marianne Hirsch coins “postmemory”: … Lire la suite
