2023 — Putting the pieces together: Client experiences of intuition in counsellingRésumé
Intuition is when we know something but are unable to determine how we know it. It is an automatic and unconscious process that influences our decision-making. In counselling, this can be a helpful tool, as long as biases are mitigated. There are studies that address intuition used in clinical practice and psychology. However, there is a lack of research in social work practice, especially focusing on exploring intuition from the clients’ perspective. Guided by an overarching research question “what are the clients’ experiences when intuition is used in a session by a professional counsellor?”, this study addressed the phenomenon of … Lire la suite

2020 — Language Learning and Social Identity Development: A Narrative Study of Syrian Refugees in CanadaRésumé
The world is witnessing the highest levels of displacement on record. The United Nations estimates that every minute, 24 people around the world are forced to flee their homes. Ongoing wars and conflicts in many parts of the world have forced millions of individuals to leave their countries and seek safety and protection through different resettlement programs around the world. In response to the current Syrian crisis, the Government of Canada has accepted more than 40,000 Syrian refugees since November 2015. Still, because of their limited language abilities, most of these individuals have been forced to “start over”. This includes … Lire la suite

2016 — Role of Impurities in CO2 Stream During CO2 Injection Process in Heavy Oil SystemsRésumé
In this study, the impact of impurities/mixtures in CO2 streams during the CO2 injection process as an enhanced oil recovery technique in heavy oil formations was examined. For this purpose, detailed theoretical and experimental studies were conducted to explore the possible effect of impurities/mixtures on the performance and recovery mechanisms of the injection process. Three different mixtures of CH4–CO2 with a CH4 concentration of 15, 30 and 50%, N2–CO2 with an N2 concentration of 15%, and N2–CH4–CO2 with an N2–CH4 concentration of 15–25% were used. First, a thorough phase behavior analysis of the heavy crude oil–CO2 impurities/mixtures was conducted. The … Lire la suite

2012 — Oblique Stagnation Point FlowsRésumé
In this thesis, we study the oblique stagnation point flow of a Newtonian fluid on different types of boundaries such as a vertical surface, stretching sheet and shrinking sheet. This study is also examined the effects of heat transfer, chemical reaction, forced convection and mixed convection on oblique stagnation point flow. All of the above mentioned physical problems are transformed into mathematical model using the governing equations of the fluid flow. These equations are then transformed into the set of nonlinear differential equations. The solutions of the transformed equations are obtained using Matlab. In order to check the accuracy of … Lire la suite

2018 — Exploring the Relationship Between Pain and Emotion Regulation in Older AdultsRésumé
The link between pain and emotion is well documented. Emotional Regulation (ER) is a process for monitoring, evaluating, and altering emotional reactions. In engaging in ER, individuals may rely on reappraisal or suppression. Suppression, in contrast to reappraisal, increases symptoms of anxiety and decreases positive mood. Complicating the emotion-pain dynamic are pain-related responses (e.g., catastrophic thinking about pain) that may vary as a function of age and gender. Some support exists for gender differences with respect to ER and mood but research on ER and older persons with chronic pain is still lacking. The prevalence of pain in older adults … Lire la suite

2022 — Temporal and Spatial Analysis of Landfills and Transfer Stations in SaskatchewanRésumé
Saskatchewan has the highest number of landfills per capita in Canada. Given the lower population density and the skewed spatial population distribution, comprehensive analysis of municipal solid waste management systems in Saskatchewan is inherently difficult. Most of the published waste studies however focus on city-level waste management, and there is a lack of literature with respect to the rural areas. In first part of the study, landfills and transfer stations were examined temporally and spatially using Geographic Information System. Landfills and transfer stations from 2017 and 2020 were plotted against census division land area, annual budget, and population density to … Lire la suite

2014 — Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA) in Regina Saskatchewan, 1997-2011: Exploring the Perceptions of Key StakeholdersRésumé
Sex offenders are typically ostracized by both the media and public, rather than seen as individuals in need of support upon their release into the community. There are services such as restorative justice programs that exist which provide support for their successful reintegration. This study sought to understand the personal views of sex offenders and community volunteers concerning the efficacy associated with such restorative initiatives. The study examined a selected group of sex offenders who were deemed high risk at the time of their incarceration and then released, as well as, volunteers and professionals who are actively involved with the … Lire la suite

2015 — Building Social Capital Through Sport, Culture and Recreation: An Experiment in Collaborative Governance in Saskatchewan Using The Proceeds of State-Directed GamblingRésumé
When states make the decision to increase government revenue from gambling, they have to mediate between a range of options for operating, regulating and controlling an industry viewed by many people to produce more public harm than benefits. Very little research has been conducted that explores the interface between the generation of revenue from state-directed gambling and efforts that governments make to use this revenue source for a social purpose. This study addresses this gap by exploring the choices available to governments for how to use gambling revenue. Cross-national comparative research reveals that the Canadian province of Saskatchewan is the … Lire la suite

2014 — The Experiences of Men Who Attended Domestic Violence Treatment Programs and Made Changes to End Violence in Their Intimate RelationshipsRésumé
The present study sought to gain an understanding of the experiences of men who have been violent in their intimate relationships, attended domestic violence treatment programs, and successfully made changes toward ending their violent behaviour. This project adds to the existing literature on intimate partner violence (IPV) and further informs practice in the area of treatment and support for men who perpetrate IPV. The study used phenomenological research methodology. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with four participants. Following completion of the interviews, all statements made by participants during the interviews were coded into fifteen themes, and these fifteen themes were … Lire la suite

2019 — Influence of Temperature and Water Quality on Physiological and Behavioral Responses of Walleye at Catch and Release Angling TournamentsRésumé
Walleye (Sander vitreus) is one of the most sought after freshwater fish for recreational angling in Canada. Physiological and behavioral measures of stress were used to determine if reduced live-well temperatures and improved water conditions can mitigate stress and facilitate recovery during catch and release angling tournaments. Fish were collected at tournament weigh-in stations to evaluate the effects of live-well water quality parameters and stress mitigation methods on recovery. Fish condition was assessed by measuring plasma cortisol and lactate levels, and observing behavioral cues. This study observed body flex, tail grab, and swim scores and these were determined valuable predictors … Lire la suite

2014 — The Punjab Problem: A Case Study on the Rise of Sikh Nationalist Identity in India,Résumé
Sikhs are among the many religious groups present in India. They are also one of the many minorities who have suffered since India’s independence in 1947. Since then, issues including the keeping and maintaining of its identity, growing fears of assimilation by Hindu fundamentalists and religious discrimination has surrounded the Sikh minority. The events of 1984 have also presented a new development in the Sikh identity, particularly the emergence of a separate and nationalist Sikh identity. What has caused the feeling of insecurity and the sudden rise of Sikh nationalistic identity within post-independent India? Through the use of evidence, historical … Lire la suite

2025 — Decolonizing mathematics education by disrupting power through the 4 Rs of Indigenous researchRésumé
Many mathematics teachers in Canada are searching for ways to decolonize their teaching practice and include Indigenous epistemologies and pedagogies in their classroom. Unfortunately, these same mathematics teachers struggle to find practical ways to do this decolonizing work that do not reduce complex Indigenous cultural phenomena to simplistic, and often tokenistic, textbook questions. In this thesis, inspired by the 4 Rs of Indigenous Research (respect, responsibility, relevance, and reciprocity), I present and enact a 4 Rs pedagogical framework composed of theoretical approaches (outcomes) and practical teacher actions (indicators). Instead of focusing on lesson topics/standards, my framework focuses on shifts in … Lire la suite

2013 — Saskatchewan Police Officers’ Perceptions of Justice Paradigms: Their Impact on Discretionary Decision-Making with YouthRésumé
Extrajudicial measures and sanctions (EJS) provide an example of how restorative justice has become a component of the criminal justice system through legislation such as the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). This thesis investigates Saskatchewan police officers’ perceptions of various justice paradigms – restorative, retributive, restitutive, and rehabilitative. It examines how officer perceptions, in combination with other characteristics, affect the use of officer discretion with youthful offenders. Findings from ordinary least-squares (OLS) regression indicated no statistically significant effect of the analyzed independent variables on restitutive and restorative justice paradigmatic perceptions. Officers’ perceptions of retributive justice were affected by their years … Lire la suite

2020 — ‘Rallying’ for Change: Examining the Engagement of Pre-Adolescents, Schools, A Community Partnerships Through Triple-Ball Volleyball Using and Appreciative LensRésumé
Elementary schools are of critical importance in our society. While their legislated mandate is to teach curricular outcomes to the youth who attend, these institutions are also being asked to do much more. Society continues to rely on schools to provide many student and community needs, particularly where physical activities, athletic achievement, and social development are concerned (Larsen et al., 2013). Community leaders and youth advocates are asking the publicly-funded school system to help ensure that youth receive the activity and education that they need to remain healthy in the long-term (PHE Canada, 2013). This study was done by creating … Lire la suite

2015 — How Spirituality Training impacts the Practice of Social Workers Assisting Elderly Clients in End-of-Live Care: A Hermeneutical Phenomenological ApproachRésumé
Social workers in end-of-life care settings are presented with many challenges. They are not only confronted by the common stressors associated with death and dying, but also with the existential concerns of the patients and their families. Social workers typically outnumber spiritual advisors or chaplains in a hospice palliative care unit, and therefore have more frequent exposure to these needs of the patients. As an elderly patient, in particular, approaches end-of-life, the notions of religion and spirituality can take on a more significant role in acceptance of mortality. Social workers have reported reluctance in addressing the spiritual matters of their … Lire la suite

2012 — Exploring the Way Servant Leaders Foster Employee Development: A Qualitative Study of Servant Leaders in Non-Profit OrganizationsRésumé
The literature on servant leadership in third sector organizations is in dire need of further research for documenting the developmental effects of servant leadership on employees in non-profit organizations (Schneider & George, 2011). The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore how servant leaders in non-profit organizations perceived their role cultivating their employees’ personal and professional development. The population under investigation constituted six Saskatchewan executive directors and managers, who worked for non-profit organizations, had more than 10 years experience in leadership roles, and identified as servant leaders within that timeframe. A modified van Kaam method utilized a servant … Lire la suite

2022 — Dilex: Enabling cross-session cross-device academic digital library searchRésumé
Academic digital library searchers struggle to conduct complex search tasks that are multifaceted in nature and require multiple sessions to finish. When resuming a suspended search task, academic searchers often spend a significant amount of time reacquainting themselves with their past activities and looking for previously issued queries and saved documents. Changing devices while working on these tasks is influenced by their situation and environment. However, current academic digital library search interfaces lack the much-needed behavioural support to continue working on a complex task over a prolonged period and when changing between devices (e.g., starting a search in a mobile … Lire la suite

2012 — Modeling and Measuring Association for Ordinal DataRésumé
We propose the modified Pearson goodness-of-fit statistic and consider it in the cumulative contingency tables. For the non-cumulative tables, we provide the scoring systems and the variance minimization correction term to Pearson goodness-of-fit statistic. We also put forward the average of individual odds ratios as the common odds ratio and modify the Mantel-Haenszel estimator of common odds ratio in a K x K ordinal contingency table where the category numbers of the variables are the same. The M[superscript2] statistic with scoring systems is also introduced. From the simulation results, we figure out that the chi-square statistics do not work except … Lire la suite

2015 — Water- and CO2-Based Oil Recovery Processes in the Tight Main Pay Zone and Vuggy Residual Oil ZoneRésumé
In this thesis, water- and CO2-based flooding processes in the upper tight main pay zone (MPZ) and in the lower vuggy residual oil zone (ROZ) of a carbonate light oil reservoir were studied and compared. In particular, the oil recovery performance of miscible CO2 simultaneous water-and-gas (CO2-SWAG) injection in the tight Bakken formation was experimentally examined. More specifically, first, several carbonate reservoir rock samples from the MPZ and ROZ in the Steelman oilfield (Canada) were characterized by using thin-section analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Second, the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) between the light crude oil and CO2 at the actual … Lire la suite

2019 — Strategic Risk-Taking In The National Football League: A Multi-Level Model Analysis of the Relative State ModelRésumé
Risk-sensitivity theory suggests that decision-makers should choose high-risk (i.e., high outcome variance) options when low-risk options are unable to meet desired goals or outcomes. Experimental results supporting risk-sensitivity theory have been well documented and account for a significant portion of the variance in decision-making under risk (reviewed in Mishra, 2014). However, substantial evidence suggests decision-makers exhibit stable individual differences in risk-taking across context. The relative state model (Mishra, Barclay, & Sparks, 2017) consolidates these differences by positing that risk-taking is a product of one of two interrelated pathways: 1) a need-based pathway characterized by decision-makers acting on disparity between the … Lire la suite

2014 — Brewing Identity: Fair-Trade Coffee, Image, Style and Consumerism in Late CapitalismRésumé
Since the collapse of the International Coffee Agreement in 1989 the production of coffee has been in crisis. Small holders struggle to survive at even a subsistence level following the deregulation of the coffee industry and the subsequent increased control of the value-chain by buyers and roasters. Fair Trade is seen as one way of increasing the amount small producers are paid for their product. The recent explosion of ``relationship coffees`` has helped a number of small producers, but is increasingly now used as a marketing and branding device for Fair Trade and traditional coffee companies alike. The symbolic nature … Lire la suite

2019 — Business Development and Nation (Re)Building in Canadian First Nations: A Case Study of the File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council and FHQ Developments Ltd.Résumé
First Nations in Canada are in the process of recovering from the fallout of damaging colonial policies that have had a lasting impact on the wellbeing of Indigenous societies. Business development and governance reform are two pathways from which First Nations can increase collective wellbeing, self-sufficiency, and self-determination. In both cases, progress is constrained by the existence of the Indian Act – a federal piece of imposed and archaic legislation that continues to govern all aspects of life on First Nation reserves. The scholarly discussion on the topic has been largely shaped by two streams of literature: that of Indigenous … Lire la suite

2017 — Eigenvalues of K-Uniform HypergraphsRésumé
We de ne two separate attempts to generalize the de nition of eigenvalues to hypergraphs and show several results related to each. The rst approach is rooted in 2-dimensional matrices and allows for the generalization of many results from graph theory. The second approach covered is more sophisticated and may only be applied to k-uniform hypergraphs. We include the development of a sound algorithm using the resultant of polynomials that can be used for any k-uniform hypergraph. Speci c examples are provided to demonstrate the power of the algorithm. Further, we show that certain results hold for the eigenvalues and … Lire la suite

2021 — Land and Colonization: A Nehinuw (Cree) PerspectiveRésumé
This dissertation is about land, colonization, and Indigenous people. While focusing broadly on Algonquian peoples, special attention is given to the Spruce Island Cree of Cumberland House in northeastern Saskatchewan. The use of the Nehinuw (Cree) language and cultural historical knowledge provides new factual information, and new conceptual understandings on the issue of land and adjoining matters that critique, reaffirm or challenge existing assumptions and misconceptions regarding Indigenous peoples, Algonquian peoples, and the people of Kaminstigominuhigoskak, Spruce Island (Cumberland House). This study begins with a review and critique of twentieth century scholarship on Algonquian land tenure which mainly arose as … Lire la suite

2018 — Population Structure of Lake Whitefish (Coregonus Clupeaformis) on Multiple Spatial Scales: Transitioning to a Genomics ApproachRésumé
This thesis was undertaken to inform the recent transition from microsatellite DNA markers to single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the field of molecular ecology, and to explore the population structure of important fish species. Microsatellite markers were the gold standard for two decades and were used to investigate the population structure of lake and round whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis and Prosopium cylindraceum) in the vicinity of a nuclear power plant on Lake Huron. The analysis of over 200 individuals of each species revealed no fine scale population subdivision relevant to management. Microsatellites remain a valuable tool, but many molecular ecologists are … Lire la suite
