2014 — Young Elementary Students Perceptions on Disability and DifferenceRésumé
Inclusion, the opportunity for all students to be educated together, is becoming the norm in many schools. As students are being placed in inclusive classroom, they are developing ideas around difference and disability. But what exactly are these students learning from this experience? This thesis examines my class of Grade 1 and 2 students’ perspectives on disability and difference. Through interviews with the students, observations and my own self-reflections two key themes emerged. Firstly, the students were unlikely to notice a difference of autism and just see a friend. Secondly, the students’ understanding of difference was derived from their own … Lire la suite

2024 — Development of a pellet extruder with co-axial nozzle for 3D printing using inflatable extrudatesRésumé
Additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as one of the core components of the fourth industrial revolution, Industry 4.0. Among others, the extrusion AM (EAM) of thermoplastic materials has been named as the most widely adopted technology. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) relies on the commercial availability of expensive filaments; hence pellet extruder-based EAM techniques are desired. Large-format EAM systems would benefit from the ability to print lightweight objects with less materials and lower power consumption which can be possible by using hollow extrudates rather than solid extrudates to print objects. In this work, we designed a custom extruder head and developed … Lire la suite

2022 — Corrosion inhibition performance of cysteine and glutathione in the MEA-based carbon capture processRésumé
Amine-based carbon capture plants are prone to severe corrosion resulting in significant maintenance and repair costs. The application of corrosion inhibitors is a common practice for corrosion mitigation; however, commercial corrosion inhibitors are inorganic-based and not environmentally friendly. This poses a risk to human health and the environment, which in turn makes chemical handling and disposal costly. The objective of this study was therefore to search for an effective, eco-friendly chemical that can be used to replace these commercial inhibitors. The study began with carrying out a chemical audit to shortlist environmentally friendly chemicals, followed by the quantum chemical analysis … Lire la suite

2024 — Identifying the support needs of the informal caregivers of long-term care residents: The potential benefits of a mobile applicationRésumé
Informal caregivers of older adults who reside in long-term care facilities play a crucial role in ensuring the needs of the resident are being met. Such institutional informal caregivers (IICs), however, are at a greater risk of experiencing subjective burden and loneliness. They also tend to report lower levels of perceived social support than their non-caregiver counterparts. Despite web-based messaging services as well as virtual and in-person informal caregiver support groups showing promise in reducing subjective burden and loneliness, barriers such as a lack of transportation or required web services, caregiver busyness, and competing responsibilities of the caregiver often prevent … Lire la suite

2023 — Exploring grief among Canadian Indigenous women who have experienced perinatal loss: Interactions with the healthcare systemRésumé
This study aimed to understand the experiences of Canadian Indigenous women who experienced perinatal loss and how their interactions with the healthcare system impacted their healing process. Perinatal loss can lead to unacknowledged grief, and the lack of specialized support within the healthcare system often leaves women to grieve alone. Women from low income families are more vulnerable to pregnancy loss, adding to the stressors that this population already endures. A qualitative approach was used to interview four women and two healthcare workers about their experiences receiving and providing care for perinatal loss. The findings highlighted the importance of acknowledging … Lire la suite

2024 — Biases in adults’ truth and lie judgments of Black children’s statements: An examination of anti-Black attitudes and unawareness of racial inequalitiesRésumé
A growing body of literature has sought to examine factors that impede adults’ abilities to detect children’s lies. The current study extends previous research that found that adults demonstrate a racial bias when evaluating statements made by children and that these judgements are related to their motivations to respond without prejudice. The goal of the current study was to explore whether adults’ veracity judgments of Black and White children’s statements differ as a function of adults’ anti-Black attitudes and their unawareness of racial privilege, institutional discrimination, and racial issues within society. Participants reviewed fictitious transcripts of a child who denied … Lire la suite

2020 — Transitioning from Curative Care to End-of-Live Care in the Acute Care Hospital: A Hermeneutical Phenomenological StudyRésumé
This study examined the experiences of members of multidisciplinary teams in two urban acute hospitals when transitioning from curative care to end-of-life care with a patient. With so many people continuing to die in acute care hospital wards (Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association, 2016; Cavaye & Watts, 2012; Grande, 2009), it is important to understand how the members of the multidisciplinary team in hospitals experience this transition, and to recognize what is being done well and what needs to be improved upon in this transition. The study was undertaken with a hermeneutical phenomenological research approach. Participants interviewed in the study … Lire la suite

2019 — Examining the Role of Intolerance of Uncertainty in the Experience of PainRésumé
The pain experience is impacted by physical, psychological, and social factors (Asmundson & Wright, 2004). Symptoms of anxiety and related disorders have been associated with varied pain syndromes, particularly chronic pain (i.e., pain lasting longer than 3 months [International Association for the Study of Pain, 1994]; Asmundson, Norton, & Vlaeyen, 2004a). Chronic pain models implicate pain-related fear and anxiety as leading to activity avoidance, impeded healing, and prolonged pain (Asmundson et al., 2004a; Vlaeyen & Linton, 2000). Indeed, researchers have focused on pain-related fear and anxiety, and anxiety sensitivity (AS) as key risk factors for chronic pain (Carleton & Asmundson, … Lire la suite

2020 — Development and Evaluation of the Sequential Clustering Technique for the Faster Study of the Human MicrobiomeRésumé
The human microbiome is the set of microbial communities that live on and in the human body. These microbes can play a large role in human health and disease, and bioinformatic methods to study these relationships are becoming increasingly important as the amount of human microbiome data increases. Most methods are slow, which makes them difficult to use for the analysis of large, multi-project datasets. We propose a Sequential Clustering (SC) technique using the software VSEARCH that is able to cluster all reads across large sample sets in a sequential manner. When applied, the SC method was able to identify … Lire la suite

2018 — Analysis of Lakewater Isotopes in the Northern Great Plains: Insights From Long-Term Monitoring and Spatial SurveysRésumé
General circulation models predict that the precipitation deficit of the Northern Great Plains (NGP) will become more pronounced in the future, and that human adaptation to future climate change will require a greater understanding prairie hydrology in order to maintain freshwater ecosystems. One method for disentangling hydrological complexities is to use stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen in water to measure the hydrological properties of lakes, including their water balance. In this thesis, I present a long-term (2003-2016), bi-weekly record of water isotopes during summer to assess the differences between instrumental and isotopic measures of hydrology, and determine the variability … Lire la suite

2021 — Transmisogyny and the Abjection of GirlcockRésumé
This thesis seeks to construct a theoretical framework around transmisogyny, the intersectional violence and marginalization faced by trans women, trans fem(me)s, and non-binary people assigned male at birth. I explore the ways in which disgust, fear, and anxiety around trans women's bodies, centered around the potential existence of a trans woman's cock (which I call girlcock, and which can be corporeal, or imaginary, as in the case of trans women who have had genital surgery, or who otherwise do not have a penis) casts them as abject - dirty, placeless, and beyond the horizon of discourse. I explore this placelessness in … Lire la suite

2022 — Mindful self-compassion (MSC) as an intervention for infertility related distress: A pilot self-help version of MSCRésumé
Approximately one in six Canadian couples who are attempting to conceive experience infertility or the inability to conceive a child despite frequent attempts. This infertility is a significant public health concern since it appears that the experience of infertility, particularly in women, has been associated with increased levels of depression, anxiety, and distress along with decreased levels of resilience. Additionally, no evidence-based treatment has been identified to treat infertility related distress. Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is a relatively novel treatment that involves learning mindfulness techniques with an explicit focus on self-compassion. Previous literature has indicated that women report lower levels of … Lire la suite

2016 — Experimental Study of the Effect of the Invasive Shrub Frangula Alnus on the Growth of Planted Understory Tree Seedlings and Herbaceous PlantsRésumé
Glossy buckthorn is an invasive exotic shrub which is efficient at colonizing both open and forested habitats, and may impede native tree and forest herb growth. Buckthorns growing in an open field and in the understory of a hybrid poplar plantation were compared. It was found that buckthorn is capable of allometric plasticity, which may explain its invasion success in both environments. Two experiments were done to test the effect of buckthorn on tree seedlings and herbaceous plants, all planted in spring 2014 in the understory of a hybrid poplar plantation invaded by buckthorn. Both experiments had two treatments: 1) … Lire la suite

2014 — Effect of Emotion Regulation Strategies on the Pain ExperienceRésumé
Pain, an unpleasant subjective and multidimensional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, is fundamentally a psychological phenomenon with emotional components. As such, the multi-component coordination of processes by which emotions are moderated, emotional regulation (ER), is of particular interest. Two primary ER strategies are reappraisal and suppression. Few studies have explored the effects of suppression and reappraisal on pain outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine: 1) differences among suppression, reappraisal, and monitoring-control experimental conditions (i.e., conditions involving verbal instruction to engage in specific ER strategies) on indicators of pain and affect; 2) the relationship between … Lire la suite

2018 — Contextual Influences in Decoding Pain Expressions: Effects of Patient Age, Informational Priming, and Observer CharacteristicsRésumé
According to clinical and experimental research, nonverbal expressions of pain are key components in its assessment. Theoretical formulations of pain specify that various contextual influences, or factors unrelated to the pain experience (e.g., patients’ age), significantly moderate observers’ interpretation of nonverbal pain expressions. Such contextual factors have been found to alter observers’ assessment of younger adults’ pain; however, the systematic study of such influences within the context of the older adult has been limited. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of contextual factors on decoding facial pain expressions in both younger and older adults. A total … Lire la suite

2015 — Optimum Water-Alternating-Gas (CO2-WAG) Injection in the Bakken FormationRésumé
In this thesis, miscible CO2 water-alternating-gas (CO2-WAG) injection in the tight Bakken formation and the effectiveness of CO2-enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) methods in the fractured Bakken formation were experimentally studied. First, the saturation pressure Psat, oil-swelling factor (SF), oil density, and CO2 solubility of CO2-saturated Bakken light crude oil were measured by using a PVT system. Second, the viscosities of CO2-saturated Bakken light crude oils with different CO2 concentrations were measured by using a capillary viscometer. Third, the vanishing interfacial tension (VIT) technique was applied to determine the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) of the Bakken light crude oil and CO2 … Lire la suite

2013 — Wave Attenuation in Porous Media Under Multiple Energy Excitations and a Statistical Periodicity Ratio Method with its Application in Nonlinear System Behavior DiagnosisRésumé
To comprehend the mechanism of seismic vibration technique used as an external excitation method in the oil production industry, a three dimensional wave model was developed based on Biot’s theory (1956a, b) for describing the wave field in a medium excited by multiple point energy sources under spherical sources. The displacements governing equations of compressional and shear wave propagation in non-viscous fluid saturated elastic porous media are derived separately. The relative displacement between the fluid and solid is investigated because it is critical to understanding the dynamic behavior of the whole domain. The superposition characteristic is considered for spherical waves … Lire la suite

2022 — Feature extraction and descriptor based on Fourier transform of local imagesRésumé
Image feature descriptors are the foundation of pattern recognition and computer vision. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, the Fourier transform is successfully used in speech recognition. For 2D images, a Fourier de-scriptor has been developed [52] to represent the contour of an image region, but feature extraction of interior image content still so far uses mostly the traditional method, e.g. encoding vector [38]. Its application in image analysis is relatively limited so far, which has a great potential, particularly in the field of object detection and recognition. Based on the idea of Fourier transform in speech recognition, … Lire la suite

2014 — Lifestyles of the Poor and CelibateRésumé
Jesuits are members of the Society of Jesus, an organization of Catholic priests and Brothers. Through their roles as ritual, political, and educational leaders in the Catholic Church, Jesuits in English-speaking Canada participated in building up and maintaining a Catholic moral cosmos. But together with the non-Jesuits with whom they worked closely, Jesuits were also engaged in deliberate, intensive moral work on themselves, often explicitly attending to freedom, sincerity, and the personal appropriation of a range of dispositions and ideas deemed to be properly “Jesuit.” Morality, understood here as the socially laid axes along which persons evaluate themselves and the … Lire la suite
