2019 — Comparison of the Power Properties of Tests Based on the Confidence Intervals for the Ratio of Binomial ProportionsRésumé
The problem of comparison of Bernoulli trials success probabilities is a topic in biological and medical investigations. In this thesis, we identify the sample scheme that provides the best accuracy for the point estimation for the ratio of probabilities. Suppose that X_1,X_2,… and Y_1,Y_2,… are two independent sequences of Bernoulli random variables, where the probabilities of success are p_1 and p_2 individually. The observations are done according to the sequential sampling schemes with Markov stopping times ν_1 and ν_2. From the results of observations X^((ν_1))=(X_1,…,X_(ν_1 )) and Y^((ν_2))=(Y_1,…,Y_(ν_2 )), it is necessary to identify the most accurate method of estimation … Lire la suite

2022 — Quantification of Physical Properties and Dissociation Characteristics for Natural Gas Hydrate SystemsRésumé
With the hydrate development stepping into the field trials, technical challenges and operational concerns arise at the same time including the risk of geological disasters, unstable/discontinuous gas production rates, low energy efficiencies, and high sand influxes. To safely, economically, and efficiently develop a natural gas hydrate (NGH) reservoir in the future, it is of fundamental and practical importance to determine its physical properties, characterize the dynamic attributes along with hydrate extraction, and design and optimize the operational parameters for different dissociation techniques at both laboratory- and field-scales. An equivalent resistance model is proposed and validated to determine hydrate saturation based … Lire la suite

2017 — An Afrocentric Cultural Study of Buum Oka Dance Yaounde and Perceptions of its Relevance to African (-Canadian) Students Between the Ages of 18 and 25 in the City of ReginaRésumé
This is an Afrocentric cultural study of Buum Oku Dance Yaounde in Cameroon and perceptions of its relevance to African (-Canadian) students between the ages of 18 and 25 in the City of Regina. The study is pitched against a national backdrop in which African (-Canadian) students experience disproportionately high school drop/push out rates. This is just one of many others problems associated with various forms of racist discourses and practices which harken back to the days of black enslavement. An enduring legacy of slavery and Western colonialism has been the continuous distortion of African history and culture, which are … Lire la suite

2018 — Modified Hopfield Networks for Integrated Process Planning and SchedulingRésumé
In production systems, process planning and scheduling are the two core functions that must be implemented before starting a production. The process planning generates a suitable process plan for each part that indicates the sequences of machining operations of the part, and the suitable machines and tools for that operations. This plan depends on the available manufacturing resources and their operation time. The scheduling, then, specifies the timetable of each operation from the process plans’ information. A significant conflict during the scheduling process is that some determined resources are not valid or overloaded because the process planning intentionally specifies the … Lire la suite

2014 — Limiting Operations for Quantum Random Variables and a Quantum Martingale Convergence TheoremRésumé
This thesis builds on the notion of quantum, or operator valued, probability as discussed in Farenick, Plosker, and Smith (J. Math. Phys, 2011) as well as Farenick and Kozdron (J. Math. Phys, 2012) by generalizing classical limiting results to the quantum setting. Mimicking the classical setting, we prove a continuity of quantum expectation result, which is the quantum analogue of Lebesgue's dominated convergence theorem and use it extensively to prove other limiting results. With the quantum limiting results in place, we de ne a quantum martingale and prove a quantum martingale convergence theorem. This quantum martingale theorem is of particular … Lire la suite

2021 — The Influence of Weather, Time of Season, and Time of Day on Bullsnake (Pituophis atenifer sayi) Thermoregulation and Habitat SelectionRésumé
The grasslands of Western Canada are exposed to one of the most variable terrestrial climates on Earth. Ectothermic reptiles such as the bullsnake (Pituophis catenifer sayi) must respond to this variation by altering their behaviour over daily and seasonal scales. In Chapter 2, I addressed questions regarding the extent to which bullsnakes thermoregulate. I examined how body temperatures (Tb) varied with available operative temperatures (Te) over an active season at a site in southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada. Bare ground Te was variable (x̄ min = 9.3, x̄ max = 31.4°C) and was outside voluntary limits (15 – 35°C) 45 % of … Lire la suite

2017 — Lithostratigraphic and structural controls of uranium mineralization in the Kiggavik East Zone, Centre Zone, and Main Zone deposits, Thelon Basin, NunavutRésumé
The Kiggavik uranium deposits are located in the north-central Rae Subprovince of the Western Churchill Province and are hosted in highly deformed Archean and Paleoproterozoic basement rocks proximal to, and underlying the Thelon Basin. This field-based study documents the lithostratigraphic and structural character of Kiggavik’s basement rocks and their controls on the uranium deposits. Field investigation, coupled with structural analysis, geochemistry and geochronology indicates that the basement rocks comprise two main tectonostratigraphic packages: a structurally ‘lower-package’ comprising ~2.71 Ga Pipedream assemblage metagreywacke and a structurally ‘upper-package’ consisting of multiple intervals of ~2.6 Ga Snow Island Suite felsic epiclastic and metarhyolite … Lire la suite

2021 — A Riparian Buffer at 10 Years: The Effect of Black Plastic Mulch on Soil Variables, Nutirent Stocks and Tree BiomassRésumé
Riparian zones are the interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Riparian buffers are an important component of this interface environment because the vegetation of the buffer can provide many ecosystem services. Establishing riparian buffers on agricultural land can help reduce agricultural pollutants such as excessive nitrogen and phosphorus, but also provide opportunities to sequester carbon and produce biomass. Sampling was done after 10 years of growth in a riparian buffer of five tree species, hybrid poplar (Populus × canadensis), red ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica), bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa), red oak (Quercus rubra) and white pine (Pinus strobus) to measure the long-term … Lire la suite

2013 — A Numerical Approach for Oil Slug Mobilization in a Capillary Tube Under Absence and Presence of External ExcitationsRésumé
This research attempts to study the mobilization of an oil drop, also known as a \slug", via the aid of a water film. This differs from other work in this area wherein the oil drop is forced through the throat of a pore using external excitations. In the first simulation, an oil drop is placed in a small diameter tube filled with water and then flushed from the tube by injecting more water. The pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the tube is then recorded. Unlike past research in this field, this work employs dimensionless numbers and sensitivity … Lire la suite

2023 — Fusions of association schemesRésumé
Since their introduction as symmetric coherent configurations by Bose and Mesner in 1959, association schemes have gained significant importance in algebraic combinatorics. An important breakthrough was achieved by Delsarte’s PhD thesis where he proved that many problems from coding theory, combinatorial design theory and statistics can be treated using the concept of association schemes [12]. Since its initial introduction, many algebraists and graph theorists have been studying the existence, construction and generalizations of various association schemes [1, 3, 7, 8, 17, 19, 28, 29, 30]. Because of their impressive construction, association schemes are useful to these subjects and there is … Lire la suite

2016 — A Calculation Model for Steam Property Variation Along Wellbore Trajectory in SAGD ProcessRésumé
Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage is an effective approach for recovering heavy oil and bitumen and its essence idea is to introduce steam heat into cold reservoir and reduce oil viscosity. In a typical SAGD process, two horizontal wells were drilled inside the target formation, one is put on the top as steam injection well and another is usually put on the bottom of target formation as oil production well. During SAGD process, a large amount of high pressure high temperature steam is injected into reservoir which occupies a big part of the whole SAGD project cost. The steam pressure and quality … Lire la suite

2012 — Reducing Provincial Drug Plan Costs Through Regional Pooled-Purchasing AgreementsRésumé
Canada’s provincial health ministries are facing rising provincial drug plan costs that can be attributed to rising medication costs and increasing drug plan claims. Provinces currently employ a collection of policy tools that have not proven to be effective in reducing the cost of these essential programs. Current policy tools are generally designed and implemented unilaterally and are not conducive to inter-provincial collaboration. The result is that small provinces are hampered in their ability to lower drug costs as manufacturers will first attempt to set price levels in larger provinces. A new policy tool is needed that will enable both … Lire la suite
