2015 — Variable Resolution in WC-MPS Method for Fluid Flow ProblemsRésumé
This research is based upon a mesh-free particle method, so called as Moving Particle Semi-implicit method (MPS). MPS is used for solving fluid dynamics problems, in which the fluid is substituted by a set of particles that move with flow and carry on the fluid properties. This method has been shown to be suitable for modeling different cases of fluid flow with large deformations including free surface flows. In this study, a refinement algorithm based on the particle splitting is defined. A quadrilateral pattern is used for splitting candidate particles and generating “daughter particles”. The error of the refinement is … Lire la suite

2014 — Utilization of Carbonated Water Injection (CWI) as a Means of Improved Oil Recovery in Light Oil Systems: Pore-Scale Mechanisms and Recovery EvaluationRésumé
In this study, the performance of secondary and tertiary carbonated water injection (CWI) was investigated at various operating conditions through sequences of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. According to the results of CO2 solubility tests measured at constant temperatures, an increase in solubility value is observed for both water and oil phases when the pressure increases in the range of P = 0.7–10.3 MPa. Furthermore, it was found that the solubility of CO2 reduces with increased temperature. In addition, the results obtained from swelling/extraction tests revealed that the oil swelling factor increases as the pressure rises until a certain pressure … Lire la suite

2023 — DSA-BEATS: Multi step, multi-variate dual self-attention N-BEATS model for forecasting COVID-19 hospitalizationRésumé
The high number of hospitalization rates of COVID-19 made public health providers overloaded. Forecasting the number of hospitalized patients related to COVID-19 can help public health providers to make informed decisions for controlling the spread. In this study, we present the Dual Self-Attention N-BEATS (DSA-BEATS) model, a novel approach that effectively combines the self-attention mechanism of transformers with the proficiency of the N-BEATS model in dealing with multi-variate forecasting problems. The model has been applied to a real data set from Regina’s daily hospitalization rates. We proposed to expand Regina’s COVID-19 daily hospitalization rates dataset to a multi-variate one by … Lire la suite

2019 — The Influence of Scoring Parameters on Precision-Based AdaBoostRésumé
Many problems in data science involve classification, i.e., dividing a dataset into dif- ferent predefined classes. Such classification problems are often solved with machine learning techniques. Using a combination of classifiers in an ensemble is an effective method to improve the accuracy of the individual classifiers' predictions. AdaBoost, a popular ensemble-based approach, combines the votes of classifiers by assigning weights to their predictions based on the classifiers' overall accuracy. A modifica- tion of AdaBoost's weighting scheme is precision-based AdaBoost, which scores the classifiers based on their accuracy in predicting specific classes, rather than their to- tal accuracy. Even though this … Lire la suite

2015 — Policy Networks: Policy Change and Causal Factors, A Uranium Mining Case StudyRésumé
Policy networks have been studied for decades with the intent of understanding the interrelationships between policy actors, the policy regimes within which they are found and the exogenous and endogenous events that can impact policy making and change. Policy network theory has developed established relationships that can be used for policy research into the mechanisms that drive policy change. Howlett (2002, 2009) and Howlett and Cashore (2007) have developed analytical tools that form a model which first organizes policies into two broad categories –firstly, the components of the policy associated with its overall aims or policy goals; and secondly, the … Lire la suite

2022 — Investigating Rhizobium Leguminosarum Metabolism and Rhizosphere Colonization Using High-Throughput Genomics and Erythritol EnrichmentsRésumé
The demand for sustainable agriculture practices is increasing as conditions related to climate change intensify, and plant-based diets gain in popularity. Rhizobia bacteria are used as inoculants to increase the yield of legume crops by fixing nitrogen in nodules on legume roots; this reduces the use of costly and environmentally harmful nitrogen fertilizers. Erythritol is exudated from legume roots, and is catabolized by Rhizobiaceae genera. The goal of the thesis is to explore how erythritol influences community composition, and to discover novel genes influenced by erythritol catabolism in Rhizobium leguminosarum 3841. Microbial communities from bulk soil, and roots, and nodules … Lire la suite

2012 — PTSD Personality Subtypes in Women Exposed to Intimate Partner ViolenceRésumé
There is considerable research indicating that intimate partner violence (IPV) is a particularly detrimental traumatic experience that seriously compromises women’s physical, emotional, social, and mental health (Alexander, 2011; Campbell et al., 2002; Pico-Alfonso et al., 2006). A common reaction to IPV exposure is posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Golding, 1999), which, though categorized singly, has a significantly heterogeneous presentation (Dickstein, Suvak, Litz, & Adler, 2010). Researchers have suggested underlying personality characteristics as potential reasons for differences in the expression of PTSD (Miller, Greif, & Smith, 2003). Specifically, a model with three personality subtypes (i.e., externalizing, internalizing, and simple) has been proposed … Lire la suite

2021 — Coordinated Integration of Distributed Energy Resources in Unit CommitmentRésumé
Distributed energy resources (DER), such as electric vehicles (EV) and roof-top solar panels have become increasingly popular and essential components of power distribution systems. However, their growth poses signi cant challenges to system operation, such as bidirectional power ow, intermittent power generation, increased peak demand, and unexpected frequency/voltage uctuation. In order to tackle these challenges, we developed a vehicle-to-grid (V2G) model, which incorporated dynamic EV usages, such as driving times, driving distance, and charging/discharging locations. In addition, solar forecasting models such as XGBoost, random forest, and arti cial neural networks were developed. We also developed a framework to evaluate and … Lire la suite

2012 — Studying Female Prostitution in Eighteenth-Century London: An Historiographical AnalysisRésumé
Prostitution has become an increasingly popular topic within the field of history, due largely to a growing interest in resurrecting the lives and voices of those who were never able to leave their own records. This has become known as social history, or “history from the bottom up,” in which individuals such as peasants, workers, women, and racial minorities take center focus. Subjects such as the prostitute are also ideal candidates for its study, as they were usually female and of extremely low social status. Though these individuals left very few records of their own, they were the subject of … Lire la suite

2017 — The heat shock response in embryonic and young of the year juvenile round whitefish (prosopium cylindraceum)Résumé
I investigated the effects of acute, increased temperatures on round whitefish embryos at the protruding mouth stage and young-of-the-year (YOY) juveniles at 3.5 months post hatch by characterizing the kinetics of the heat shock response (HSR). The HSR provides protection from a variety of stressors (i.e., thermal stress) at the cellular level and is characterized by the upregulation of a suite of proteins called heat shock proteins (Hsps). Round whitefish embryos were exposed to two heat shock (HS) temperatures (6 or 9 °C above control temperature) for 4 different lengths of time (1, 2, 3, or 4 h) followed by … Lire la suite

2020 — The Mother-Daughter Dyad as Modernized Archetypal Mythology in The Last House On The Left and CarrieRésumé
This thesis analyzes The Last House on the Left (1972, Wes Craven, USA) and Carrie (1976, Brian De Palma, USA) – two horror films from the 1970s – in terms of Carl Jung’s concepts of the collective unconscious, the shadow, the feeling function, the dual nature of the mother archetype, and specifically, its constellation as the negative mother complex of the daughter. It examines the mother-daughter relationship as female-specific and a unique psychological experience, asserting how the sexual likeness to her mother imbues the daughter with a deeper understanding of her darker unconscious contents. Stressing Jung’s notion of mythology as … Lire la suite

2015 — Habitat Selection by Birds in Willow-Ringed Wetlands: Management Implications for Harvesting Willow BiomassRésumé
Increase in prices of fossil fuels and escalating environmental conflicts have generated renewed interest in bioenergy production. Abundant small wetlands ringed with willow species (willow rings) growing naturally in the Prairie Ecozone of North America may provide a source of natural biomass as a bioenergy feedstock. Subsequently, a bioenergy crop from these wetlands could increase their economic value and help reduce their drainage and loss. Little is known about the importance of willow vegetation to birds, and what habitat features may be important to consider when planning biomass harvest. To address this knowledge gap, I conducted point count surveys in … Lire la suite

2019 — Higher Rank Numerical Ranges for Certain Non-Normal MatricesRésumé
This thesis undertakes the study of higher rank numerical ranges for certain non-normal matrices, namely direct sums of Jordan blocks, and direct sums of the form (Jordan Block plus scalar multiple of the identity). The higher rank numerical range of a normal matrix is well-understood, but little is known in general, other than the fact that it is always compact and convex. Our main goal is to study the geometric behavior of the higher rank numerical ranges of certain non-normal matrices. In this thesis we show that the higher rank numerical ranges for the direct sums of Jordan blocks with … Lire la suite

2012 — The Structure of Operator Systems on Finite-Dimensional Hilbert SpacesRésumé
The purpose of this thesis is to describe in detail the structure of arbitrary operator systems S B(H), where H is assumed to be of finite dimension, using Arveson's non-commutative Choquet theory, and to determine the C* -envelope of S in certain special cases of interest. Arveson classifies these operator systems as either reduced or non-reduced, and we look at these classifications in detail. S is said to be reduced when its boundary ideal is {0} and non-reduced otherwise. We will give examples of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional operator systems; show what Arveson's parametrization would be in such cases; and determine … Lire la suite
