2013 — The Plastic Castle and Less Obvious DisastersRésumé
This creative project is a manuscript of short fiction works, which explores the style of literary minimalism and its affiliate, ‘dirty realism’. The stories utilize compact sentence structure, the element of exclusion, and compressed meaning to convey their significance. As well, several of the works in the manuscript employ ekphrasis, as a tool to expand and reflect the narrative. Lire la suite

2016 — Oligotrophication of downwind boreal lakes caused by oil sands-derived enhanced nutrient depositionRésumé
Development of the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) in northern Alberta, Canada has resulted in the substantial release of emissions, such as reactive nitrogen (Nr) species and base cations, which can fertilize downwind lakes in the boreal forest of Saskatchewan. However, to address the potential impacts of nutrient deposition on these algal communities, interpretations must occur in the context of ongoing regional climate change. Here, I use a factorial paleolimnological analysis to isolate the unique effects of AOSR emissions and climate change on lake geochemistry (C and N stable isotopes and elemental content) and algal assemblages (fossil pigments) over the … Lire la suite

2016 — Structural study of the auriferous Santoy shear zone, northeastern Glennie domain, SaskatchewanRésumé
The study area lies within the Pine Lake Greenstone belt of the Glennie domain, 125 km northeast of LaRonge, SK. The Santoy shear zone hosts the Santoy 7, Santoy 8/8 East, and “Santoy Gap” gold deposits. This shear zone was studied using a structural and geochronological (ID-TIMS) approach in order to decipher its complex relationship with plutonism, deformation, alteration, and gold mineralization. Surface and subsurface mapping reveals that the Santoy shear zone, and deposits therein, show a clear structural relationship with the Carruthers Lake synform. The Santoy 7, Santoy “Gap”, and Santoy 8 deposits lie along the western limb of … Lire la suite

2021 — Quasi-Pure E0-SemigroupsRésumé
We introduce the class of quasi-pure E0-semigroups acting on a von Neumann algebra as that with equal tail and fixed-point algebras and we describe these notable algebras for E0-semigroups of B(H) where H is a separable Hilbert space. We consider the classes of pure, quasi-pure and ergodic E0-semigroups induced by essential states of the spectral C+-algebra of a product system and we characterize spatial product systems in terms of the existence of certain essential states of the corresponding spectral C+-algebra. 2012 — Shift and Quasi-Shift Endomorphisms Associated with Representations of Cuntz AlgebrasRésumé
We present an overview of the main literature regarding *-endomorphisms of the von Neumann algebra B(H), the bounded linear operators on a separable, in nite- dimensional Hilbert space H. In doing so, we follow the established technique of ex- ploiting the surjective correspondence with non-degenerate representations of Toeplitz- Cuntz algebras. Moreover, we introduce an unstudied class of endomorphism, which we call quasi-shift endomorphisms, and show that they are determined by the well- known class of shift endomorphisms. This is original research adapted from our recent pre-print Quasi-shift Endomorphisms Associated with Representations of Cuntz Alge- bras [13]. i Lire la suite

2019 — The Heart of Relics: Catholic Relics, Affect, and the Heart of Brother AndreRésumé
Catholic relics elicit strong emotion and are thought to have healing powers; they are an important part of Catholic practice, yet their affect is not often explicitly explored. Arguing that relics are affective, or emotionally impactful, because they are part of a system that encourages intense emotional reactions through sensation and perception, this thesis examines the transmutability of Catholic relics and their emotional impact beyond religious doctrine using an interdisciplinary theoretical framework of affect, emotion and empathy. Locating Catholic practice within a twentieth-century Quebec context in the form of a case study, this investigation of affect is situated through events … Lire la suite

2013 — Sleep and Health Service Use In Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence - A Longitudinal Feminist AnalysisRésumé
The lifetime prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Canada is estimated to be 25% (Ellsberg & Heise, 2005; Seager, 2003). Survivors of IPV report experiencing sleep difficulties (M. A. Woods, & Hampton, 2008) that impact their health, subsequently increasing health service use (Bonomi, Andreson, Rivara, & Thompson, 2009; Colten & Altevogt, 2006; Moorcroft, 2005; Rosa, 2006; Soares, 2005). Being able to isolate the effect of IPV on health service and long term sleep disruption may shed light on the economic as well as social cost of IPV to society. The purpose of the present study was to measure the … Lire la suite

2019 — Dental Hygiene Program Graduates’ Experiences with Transition into Private Practice: A Phenomenological StudyRésumé
This qualitative study examined the transition to private practice experiences of recently graduated dental hygienists (DHs) from a dental hygiene program. A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was taken to understand the lived experiences of six study participants as they progressed from novice students to competent clinicians. Participants were invited to submit personal journals that expressed their experiences throughout the first six months of practice. These graduates also participated in individual semi-structured interviews in order to elaborate on their transition experiences discussed in their journals. Four key themes emerged from the data collected regarding the importance of: a support system or mentor; … Lire la suite

2012 — "Better to Reign in Hell, than Serve in Heaven": Satan's Transition From a Heavenly Council member to the Ruler of PandaemoniumRésumé
In this thesis, I argue that Satan was not perceived as a universal malevolent deity, the embodiment of evil, or the “ruler of Pandaemonium” within first century Christian literature or even within second and third century Christian discourses as some scholars have insisted. Instead, for early “Christian” authors, Satan represented a pejorative term used to describe terrestrial, tangible, and concrete social realities, perceived of as adversaries. To reach this conclusion, I explore the narrative character of Satan selectively within the Hebrew Bible, intertestamental literature, Mark, Matthew, Luke, Q, the Book of Revelation, the Nag Hammadi texts, and the Ante-Nicene fathers. … Lire la suite

2012 — A Comparison of Aggregate and Multi-Region Load Forecasting Models in SaskatchewanRésumé
Power systems in large geographic environments experience diverse weather phenomena. Due to spatial separation and economic diversification, load centres will exhibit differing electrical demand. This diversity of weather and electric loads proves challenging for load forecasters using a single aggregate model. In such systems, aggregate response of these load centres cannot be properly analyzed by a single load-weather model. Instead, the aggregate demand is best explained through multi-region modeling. This thesis describes the load and weather diversity within the control area of an electric utility in the province of Saskatchewan. A Similar Day model is contrasted against Artificial Neural Network … Lire la suite

2017 — Running Solo: Indigenous Teacher Identity in Roman Catholic EducationRésumé
Through the lens of Critical Race Theory (CRT), Tribal Critical Race Theory (TribalCrit), and whiteness studies the inquiry set out to trouble the question; how does Indigenous teacher identity exist in Roman Catholic education? Following a hybrid methodology that allied critical ethnography and Indigenous methodology, three salient themes emerged: (1) Indigenous teacher identity, (2) systemic barriers and (3) notions of change. Endemic structures of dominance and pressures to colonize influenced the construction of Indigenous teacher identity in Roman Catholic education. Conversations concerning pedagogical philosophy, advocacy and the effects of cultural brokering focused the theme. Systemic barriers were abundant for Indigenous … Lire la suite

2014 — Maceral Variations and Maceral Assemblages within the Upper and Lower Members of the Bakken Formation, Williston Basin, Saskatchewan, Canada.Résumé
Argillaceous rocks are most often considered to be homogeneous entities, because, at the macroscopic scale, they appear to be so. The Bakken Formation within southern Saskatchewan contains two black shale members, the Upper and Lower Bakken Formation. This study has examined the organic matter within the Upper and Lower members of the Bakken Formation using fluorescence light microscopy on samples taken from core, at closely-spaced intervals across southern Saskatchewan. The organic constituents, or macerals, vary significantly both along with depth within a given borehole (i.e. temporally) and from one well to another (i.e. spatially). The macerals present in the Upper … Lire la suite

2018 — Effects of Temperature and Heavy Oil Viscosity on Foamy Oil Flow in Porous MediaRésumé
With vast potential reserves of heavy oil, the research on heavy oil has been the hottest topic over the decades. Foamy oil flow occurs in primary production of heavy oil reservoirs with unexpected high oil recovery factor. Studying on foamy oil mechanisms and flow behaviors helps enhancing oil recovery. Lots of experimental researches have been conducted to investigate on improving foamy oil flow efficiency. Pressure depletion rate has been proven to be one of the most significant parameters that affects foamy oil flow. However, the other factors that influence foamy oil such as reservoir temperature, oil viscosity, oil composition, etc. … Lire la suite

2021 — Effects of Concentric Unilateral Training Utilizing an Isokinetic Dynamometer on Functional Outcomes and Lower Limb Muscular Power in Subacute Hemiparetic Individuals: A Case SeriesRésumé
Background. Stroke is a serious medical condition that is characterized by subsequent neurological deficits due to disruption in the brain vasculatures. Manifestation of neurological deficits varies between individuals and is highly dependent on the location, severity, and duration of the stroke. Neurological deficits and negative signs of upper motor neuron syndromes such as lower limb weakness, impaired inter-limb coordination, and greater fatigability may affect one’s rehabilitation outcome and ability to perform activities of daily living. Application of resistance training programs into post stroke (chronic and subacute) individuals’ exercise routine has been shown to increase functionality and improve both muscle function … Lire la suite

2017 — Evaluation of a chemical dissolved air flotation system for the treatment of restaurant dishwasher effluentsRésumé
Large quantities of fresh water are consumed by restaurant dishwashers every day, producing significant amounts of high strength oily wastewater in the process. An internationally patented chemical dissolved air flotation (DAF) system (Young and Munoz, 2012) was evaluated in this research to determine if it was capable of reclaiming restaurant dishwasher effluents (RDEs) in a cost-effective and reliable manner. Different chemicals and process conditions used in chemical DAF were evaluated. Dimethylame P/W epichorohydrin (Polymer 572), a cationic polymer, was determined to be the optimal demulsifier among eight demulsifiers tested. Influent and effluent water quality was evaluated in terms of oil … Lire la suite

2015 — Oil and Gas Pipeline Risk Assessment Model by Fuzzy Inference Systems and Artificial Neural NetworkRésumé
Pipeline transportation has been widely used and recognized as the best way to transport oil and gas in energy industry, because of its excellent safety features and significant economic advantages. However, the failure accident of pipelines is one of the most frustrating issues, as its significant adverse impact on people, environment and public safety; it can also cause severe economic loss. Due to pipelines mostly being installed underground, information limitation and data uncertainties make it difficult to predict and assess failure risks by a single methodology based model. Intelligence Systems (IS), in particular Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) and Artificial Neural … Lire la suite

2023 — Development of high-resolution climate projections over Canada in the 21st centuryRésumé
In this research, high-resolution climate projections over Canada have been developed through the WRF model. The spatial and temporal variations of Canada’s temperature, precipitation, and precipitation extremes in the 21st century have been comprehensively analyzed. Potential mechanisms in terms of temperature, precipitation, and precipitation extremes over Canada have been investigated, and effects of anthropogenic warming on these variables have been revealed. In addition, permafrost degradation under climate change is extended to a global scale, and a dynamic longterm classification scheme for discontinuous permafrost is proposed. The annual mean temperature over Canada is projected to increase by [1.53, 1.98], [2.51, 3.86], … Lire la suite

2018 — Characterization of Neuronal Protein Complexes to Identify Molecular Underpinnings of Autism Spectrum DisorderRésumé
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that affects brain development, social and communication skills in children and adults, poses a tremendous burden on caregivers and the healthcare system. Although advances in genetics has enabled the discovery of hundreds of ASD-associated genes, the biological context of how these ASD-linked risk genes contribute to the pathophysiology of the disorder remains unclear. The study of protein-protein interactions (PPI) offers a valuable framework for elucidating this biological context, so far only few human proteomics studies were targeted to ASD. Many cell-context-dependent human ASD interactions involved in neuronal processes are unknown. This study … Lire la suite

2020 — Intimate Partner Violence in Rural and Northern Communities: A Canadian PerspectiveRésumé
Over the past decade, research has largely focused on the type, frequency, and severity of intimate partner violence (IPV) incidents, and has also documented the significant long-term consequences associated with experiencing IPV. To date, a large proportion of research examining IPV in relation to geographical location has focused on urban centres, which cannot be generalized to non-urban areas due to landscape differences (Burke, O’Campo, & Peak, 2006). Furthermore, a small proportion of research has begun to explore the complexities associated with living in rural and northern regions; however, the bulk of these studies span international contexts, and thus, cannot be … Lire la suite

2015 — Support-Seeking and Quality of Life in Female Survivors of Intimate Partner ViolenceRésumé
Previous research suggests that women who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) report severe physical and mental health consequences, as well as poor quality of life. One approach to dealing with the negative effects of IPV is for women to seek support through informal support networks, such as family and friends, and formal support services, such as shelters, counselling programs, and social assistance. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between informal support, use of formal services, and quality of life, using a diverse sample of Canadian women who experienced IPV. Data analysis was conducted to explore … Lire la suite

2019 — From the Distal to the Proximate: Exploring Social Cognitions in Risk-takingRésumé
Risk-sensitivity theory suggests people engage in risk-taking when they cannot fulfill needs through risk-averse behavior. Both proximate mechanisms (e.g., affect, social cognition) and distal mechanisms (e.g., early developmental environments) have been shown to influence risk-taking. However, little is understood about how such mechanisms contribute to the perception of benefits derived from risk-taking. A pilot study (n = 172) and follow-up confirmatory study (n = 295) were conducted to identify which proximate and distal mechanisms were associated with the perception of increased benefits from risk-taking. I specifically examined if benefit perceptions of risk-taking were associated with distal, developmental inputs (early environmental … Lire la suite

2021 — “The New Reality”: Hardcore’s Shifting Authenticities Under Capitalist RealismRésumé
This thesis challenges the common assumption that hardcore punk subculture is an eternally subversive and progressive musical movement. Particularly in North America – hardcore’s geographical origin and primary locus of discourse – the subculture’s norms have been reterritorialized alongside late-20th and early-21st century neoliberal capitalist expansion. Using the theoretical framework of capitalist realism introduced by Mark Fisher (2009), and considering the work of Simon Reynolds (2011), Agnes Gayraud (2019), Gilles Deleuze, and Felix Guattari (1983; 1987), I map the ways in which this reterritorialization has suppressed hardcore’s social-political imperative and limited its collective capacity for sonic innovation and DIY (do-it-yourself) … Lire la suite
