The main objective of the article is to show the links between the Far-right movements and the survivalist moral code. We will also show that the survivalist belief in the imminence of the end of our society has ties with Christian eschatology and Far-right fundamentalists. We will develop the thesis which supports that survivalism is a fiction based on a multitude of cognitives biaises: a form of extreme thought that desires the death of modern society in order to go back to an idealised natural state.

This article examines the relationship between fiction and non-fiction from the perspective of contemporary philosophy, using selected examples from the last 50 years of Quebec cinema. It notes how moving back and forth between genres (including intentional efforts to blur the boundaries between genres) is a persistent trend in Quebec cinema. This also highlights and raises theoretical problems associated with any attempt at clear demarcation, leading to a discussion of the similarities and differences between fictional cinema and documentary cinema as they both seek to express a unique social reality. In fact, the relationship between the two is continually being (re)negotiated as genres develop and accepted boundaries are challenged in response to artistic trends, new methods and experimentation. I begin by providing some general observations on the concepts of fiction and documentary, drawing on the recent work of philosophers Gregory Currie and Noel Carroll. Next, I explore the motifs underlying the clear trend toward blurring the lines between fiction and documentary, using a certain number of examples from Quebec cinema. Finally, this contemporary perspective on Quebec cinema allows me to make some more general remarks on the ontology of cinema.

At the turn of the 20th century, Saint-Jean-de-Dieu Hospital was the largest asylum in Canada and the therapeutic skills of its operators and psychiatrists were internationally renowned. Consultation of over 8000 medical files from this psychiatric institution uncovered valuable correspondence between the families of patients (petitioners) and medical superintendents on the subject of trial leave. These primary sources describe the comings and goings of patients between the hospital and the family home. They also reveal fears for a future when the patient might return home permanently. This study of the cultural history of sensibilities examines, from the perspective of “risk”, the private and intimate dimensions of the contemplation of potential misfortune caused by the return of a family member who was deemed mentally retarded, incurably insane, or senile demented. In particular, the article focuses on the discourse surrounding “events that had yet to occur” that prompted petitioners to reject the unconditional release of a family member from the psychiatric hospital.

This article analyzes the four books released between 2005 and 2007 by Verdier publishing that constitute the short-lived collection “L'image.” The purpose is to grasp the nature of the relationship each of these iconotexts entertains with the image that inspires it and to understand what writing from an image can give rise to in terms of literary discourse. For that purpose we study L'ordre donné à la nuit by Claude Esteban, D'un pays de parole by Alain Lévêque, Le·mat by Anne Serre and L'autre monde by Christian Garcin.

From the arrival of the first French fur traders and missionaries, the Illinois Country was defined by a series of cultural and political accommodations. When Virginian soldiers arrived at Kaskaskia in 1778, it marked a third imperial regime in the region in fifteen years. Much like they had done under the previous French and British regimes, French Creoles sought to assert political and cultural autonomy under American rule. This article considers the challenges that French Creoles faced in resisting emerging American hegemony in Illinois Country, and the strategies that they employed to adapt to new geopolitical circumstances during and after the American Revolution. A comparison of Creole claims and acts of resistance at Kaskaskia and Cahokia, and their surroundings, shows that they successfully asserted their rights and also set the foundation for a new Franco-American identity.

AbstractThis study addressed two questions: 1) Are the concurrent links between gambling, delinquency and drug use weaker during early adulthood than during middle adolescence; 2) Can the concurrent links by early adulthood be explained, at least in part, by common antecedent factors? Two population based samples of males were used to answer these questions. The putative common antecedent factors were assessed when the participants were 12 years old. These factors include variables from three domains of functioning: self, family and peers. Gambling, delinquency and drug use were assessed at age 16 years and again at age 23. Results show that the links between gambling, delinquency and drug use are not weaker by early adulthood (i.e. age 23) than they were by middle adolescence (i.e. age 16). In addition, these links cannot be explained by the age 12 antecedent factors. The discussion stresses the theoretical and applied implications of these findings.

The study aims to investigate the prevalence of and factors associated with child poly-victimization, in order to provide a reliable estimate of the problem in the Chinese context. Using a 2-stage stratified sampling procedure, 18,341 high schools students were recruited from 6 cities in China. Students were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire containing items about child victimization, addictive behaviors and adolescent sexual behaviors. In particular, the validated Chinese version of Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire (JVQ) was employed in this study. Preceding-year prevalence rates were 23.2 % for any type of child victimization and 9.2 % for poly-victimization. Living in Mainland China, being younger in age, and having siblings were associated with increased odds ratios of poly-victimization. Some adolescent addictive and sexual behaviors, including gambling, smoking, alcohol abuse, early sexual intercourse, multiple sex partners and teenage pregnancy, were also significantly associated with increased likelihood of poly-victimization. The findings of this study provide evidence of strong associations between child victimization and risky behaviors, which warrant prioritized intervention in cases of poly-victimization.

AbstractPas pire is shaped by the openness and transcending of boundaries that are characteristic of self-fiction. This article examines the territory of dreams in which human beings explore their fears, desires and abilities. In the novel, this knowledge of the “I” goes beyond the intimate and personal to the social and collective, just as the novel intertwines personal history and Acadian history. An attitude of suspicion with regard to the outside world, which for a long time undermined the Acadian “reconquest of the self”, yields to an openness symbolised by travel. This openness embodies a transgression of the boundaries between “here” and “there”, self and other.

The author examines the Angéline de Montbrun's literary legacy through the prism of the Charlotte Brontë's Studies. By refining the reference system and exhibiting some structural elements of this legacy, those new lens show how the pioneer label attributed to Laure Conan should be challenged to point out the stakes for female writers. Intertextuality has already been a subject of interest for the Laure Conan's Studies, but the English literary legacy of the novel has not been examined yet. By convoking Charlotte Brontë's Studies, the metadiscursive potential of some elements of the narrative, in regard of the writing conditions for women, is highlighted in particular with the Bluebeard's Gothic concept (where gothic elements of the plot are associated with Charles Perrault's tale). This concept shows how narrative structure and strategies can open the question of the heritage in Laure Conan's work.

For a long time we associated epistolary and feminine gender. Does the literary history really seal this association by the consecration of a more important number of women who practiced epistolary. To this question, the author answers negatively. She proposes however a second reading of the correspondence of JulieBruneau-Papineau (1795-1862) from the concept of “ethos” to extricate the esthetics takes in these letters. The analysis of the discourse shows that the control of thee pistolary code by this patriotic woman invites to recognize her the status of letterwriter's model. The example of Bruneau-Papineau incites reread again the other women's letters of period.
