ABSTRACTThis paper controls the validity of professional titles appearing in the baptism, marriage and burial acts from the Montreal district under the French Regime using data taken from notarial deeds. It also provides an estimate of the number of metalsmiths active in the area and the numerical importance of seven types of metalsmithing. Finally, observations are made concerning the adaptation of French professional titles to the colonial context.

Other artifacts are employed to seek revenge for the rejection of their love or to serve as love charms. The majority of these artifacts hold symbolic significance and serve as good-luck charms.
