The average number of children per woman in Tunisia has declined from about seven in the mid 1960's to about five in the early 1980's, but the change has been slower over the last part of this period. In attempting to understand Tunisian society and its childbearing situation, we address questions of (1) sex roles, (2) conflicts over models of development and (3) tribal loyalties. The state has attempted to change sex roles, but there remain powerful traditional forces, especially from men, giving priority to women's family roles. The conflict between Western and Islamic models of development implies that there is a wide element of ambivalence as people try to seek the advantages of both the small (Western) family and the large family corresponding to cultural traditions. For many, four children represent a type of compromise: “not too many, not too few”. Given the ways in which tribal loyalties become part of institutional dynamics, certain groups have come to perceive that Family Planning is acting not for them but for its own benefit. In the course of reconstructing these fertility dynamics, the author also stresses the experiences through which he learnt to situate the relevant issues.

In the wake of the Revolution, intangible cultural heritage has been the subject of a raucous debate in Tunisia. Consider fashion, artistic, corporal, culinary and festive expressions. This debate, which gave rise to a number of violent events, testifies to a malaise that had been holding sway for decades, according to Tunisians, in the past and in the collective memory. In other words, it is referring to a latent crisis which has never been resolved and which burst on the scene like a time bomb in front of the entire world when the authority of the State was no longer capable of containing it through censure and oppression. In order to better grasp the content of this upheaval, which has divided post-revolutionary Tunisia between modernists and traditionalists, this article highlights the cultural expressions in light of which the intangible cultural heritage has been engaged and disputed between these two camps since the Revolution.

This article examines the relationship between population, economic growth and social development in Africa. After setting out the broad outlines of demographic dynamics and demonstrating the specificity of the continent in the general picture of demographic transitions, the authors reconsider policy debates on population and development in the light of the African situation. They analyze the general relationship between population growth and development in Africa, highlighting the specificity of the Maghreb region and the role of improvements in human capital in demographic change. On this basis, three possible future demo-economic trajectories and medium term impacts are presented. The conclusion emphasises the need for specific regional development policies.

This study of marital choices of descendants of immigrants born or raised in France whose parents emigrated from North-Africa, Sahelian Africa or Turkey shows that a certain number of them marry immigrants from their parents' home country. This article looks at the social and cultural characteristics of these transnational endogamous couples as compared to other marital choices. Results are drawn from both the statistical survey Trajectoires et origines (INED/INSEE 2008) and a series of biographical interviews conducted in 2007. Couples who choose this conjugal option seem to prefer a more communitarian way of being together, insuring generational continuity and maintaining traditional roles. Their choices suggest that these cultural preferences seem to be the consequence of their social conditions, e.g. lack of education, employment insecurity, and residence in segregated neighbourhoods.
