For the French speaking population of Louisiana, the tourist industry plays a leading role in maintaining ethnie identity. “Commemorative sites” allow Cajuns and Black Creoles to develop an awareness of their respective pasts. Since Cajuns are more interested in the Acadian diaspora and Creoles explore their African heritage, each sees itself as separate in spite of common cultural traits. These differences aside, the two groups have the same expectations of tourism: to ensure the recognition of the group by outsiders, thus aiding its survival. In this process, the vision of the Other pays a major role. The work of the folklorist authenticates the attractions of the local culture and reinforces feelings of belonging in much the same way as tourists do. This popularity is a source of pride, a form of retaliation for past rejection, and places an economic value on the culture which is important to its revitalisation. The interiorisation of the tourist image illustrates the various strategies at work in the formation of a positive self-image.

Objectives About half of young adults with early psychosis also have substance use disorders (SUD). For young adults with first episode psychosis (FEP), the persistence of SUD negatively impacts the symptomatic and functional outcome as well as the management of the problems. This article aims to identify and synthetize the best therapeutic approaches for the treatment of young adults with concurrent disorders (FEP and SUD) and to present avenues for practical and adapted approaches for the assessment and follow-up of people with concurrent FEP and SUD.

Although many authors have postulated a connection between sexual abuse and many risk behaviors, no review of empirical studies on adolescent girls has described or analysed the existing knowledge emerging from the literature on this topic. A review of 47 empirical studies on the at-risk behaviors of sexually abused adolescent girls was therefore completed. Alcohol and drug use, sexual at-risk behaviors, delinquent acts and self-mutilation were the at-risk behaviors under focus. On the whole, it appears that sexual abused adolescent girls are more likely to present at-risk behaviors than their non abused counterparts. However, results on delinquent acts and self-mutilation will have to be replicated before they can be considered solid given the smaller number of studies and the different methodologies used in the studies. Abuse and family characteristics appear to influence the presence of at-risk behaviors and constitute risk and protection factors. The functions of the at-risk behaviors in the lives of adolescent girls as well as models by which these behaviors can be understood are discussed. Clinical implications and suggestions for future research are also underlined.

Pentecostalism is a religion that is growing phenomenally, especially in the Kaingang communities of southern Brazil. In the village Jacú of the Terra Indígena Xapecó, Kaingang women form by far the majority of followers and are extremely involved in various Pentecostal activities. The intention of the article is first to expose how this female involvement contributes greatly to the success and growth of the churches, especially through the creation of women's spaces such as the Prayer Circles, where the spiritual work carried out is considered indispensable. The article then looks at how Pentecostalism allows some women to acquire prestige and authority by acting as mothers to their communities, social workers and true religious leaders. The practice of Pentecostalism allows them to develop new skills and to access new roles and responsibilities. The analysis reveals that despite the absence of official titles, some women are considered pastors. The different mechanisms for legitimizing their authority are highlighted. The use and limits of their authority are also discussed.

Some researchers believe that co-occurrence is fairly frequent among maltreated children. However, most etiological studies of physical abuse have not taken into account co-occurrence of different forms of maltreatment. The large number of unidentified mixed samples calls into question the validity of our etiological knowledge on physical abuse. The aim of this study, therefore, is to compare the characteristics of cases of physical abuse according to whether the abuse occurs alone or co-occurs. The data are taken from the Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect – 2003, which examined 11 562 reports investigated by a representative sample of 63 child welfare service areas in the fall of 2003. The cases included 658 physically abusive families. Of this number, 217 (33%) families inflicted one or two additional forms of maltreatment. The survey form provided information on over 50 characteristics of the children reported, their families and their parental figures. Bivariate and stepwise regression analyses revealed that the profile of physical abuse cases varies depending on whether the physical abuse occurs alone or in combination with one or two other forms of maltreatment. Those results will help deepen our knowledge of physical abuse and may serve to inspire different types of intervention for the two groups of children.

This article aims to explore the concept of victimless damage. This refers to paradoxical cases where a perpetrator and a moral wrong can be easily identified, but where somehow the role of the victim as such can be questioned. In order to explore this concept, I will first offer a typology of cases that could be labelled under this umbrella concept—namely, (1) cases of deceased victims, (2) biotechnological or no-identity cases, and (3) the ones related to lack of awareness due to epistemic injustice. Then, after highlighting the common traits and discussing some fuzzy cases, I will flesh out the main arguments for and against of the existence of and need for this concept, on the basis of both moral objectivism and subjectivism. In my view, delving into these arguments could shed some light on the metaethical debate on the sine qua non conditions of moral damage and its relation to moral wrongness. Finally, I will conclude by advocating for the need to introduce a gradational concept of moral damage and the second-person perspective into moral philosophy in order to take into account potential cases of victimless damage, but without having to accept the premises of moral realism.

Youths running away from residential care centers worries authorities and families, as it interferes with ongoing rehabilitation efforts, while also exposing the runaways to a variety of situations where their safety or development can be put at risk. While intervention is complicated by both the multitude of factors that contribute to youths running away as well as the resulting consequences, these elements also represent noteworthy levers for potential intervention. Contextualizing these elements by documenting the experiences the youths face when running away is however necessary. Using interviews conducted with a sample of 15 young (15-17 years old) male runaways residing in a residential care center, this qualitative study first aims to describe the experience of running away in order to explore how the context (prior to and during) these episodes influenced the reported experiences. A thematic analysis of the interview transcripts reveals various risky situations reported by the young runaways and also brings to light four runaway experience profiles that can be distinguished on the basis of their lived experiences. Every one of the profiles mentions, as part of the reported experiences, dissatisfaction with the context of placement as well as the predominant role of the relational context. These results highlight the importance of seizing on moments of instability (e.g. the modification of an authorization to leave the residential care center) and of taking into account the specific experiences of different profiles during interventions.
