Les pasteurs se montraient hautains et méprisants vis-à-vis des chasseurs et des agriculteurs. L’ethnographie est-africaine témoigne de la généralité de ce phénomène. Reste à élucider les raisons de l’étonnante fierté des éleveurs. Diverses hypothèses sont examinées, mais l’auteur attire l’attention sur les considérations de nature idéologique et il suggère que l’élément décisif pourrait bien avoir été l’idéologie. Il tente d’identifier les facteurs « objectifs » susceptibles, d’une part, d’induire le pasteur à conclure en toute quiétude à la supériorité morale (ou éthique) de son mode de subsistance, et, d’autre part, d’inciter chacun de son côté, le chasseur et l’agriculteur, à prendre sérieusement en considération, sinon à admettre, les prétentions des éleveurs.

The paper aims at elucidating the causes of the haughtiness and of the scornful attitude displayed by East African pastoralists towards both the hunting and agricultural peoples. These attitudes have been reported so often by anthropologists and others that we may take them to be characteristic of the herding groups. The author examines a few plausible explanations, but he primarily focuses on the ideological dimension, arguing that the most crucial factor of the unbounded pride of the pastoralists may have been linked to the notion they had of their own mode of livelihood. Not necessarily siding with the herders, the author attempts to discover the empirical features of pastoralism likely, on the one hand, to foster in their minds a deep feeling of moral supremacy over the hunters and the peasants, and, on the other hand, to induce these two categories of people at least to take seriously into account the rather annoying claims of the pastoralists.

In defining the ‘peasant’, reference is generally made to an unbalanced and inferior relationship with a larger economic, political and cultural unity. The exact nature of this relationship, however, continues to be unclear. The distinct features of the ‘dominant’ and corresponding ‘peasant’ sectors and the intricacies of their interdependence must be identified and analysed in order to reach a more complete theoretical understanding of complex societies. In this article, I examine one aspect of the economic sphere of a Mayan peasant village in Yucatan. The peasant, as consumer, plays a vital role in the marketing process, a process which is a mechanism in the dependence of the local sector on the urban industrial sector.

La définition de « paysan » fait généralement référence à une relation d’inégalité et d’infériorité avec une unité économique, politique et culturelle d’une envergure plus importante. La nature précise de cette relation demeure obscure. Les traits distinctifs du secteur « dominant » et du secteur « paysan » ainsi que les complexités de leur interdépendance doivent être identifiés de façon à permettre une analyse plus compréhensive des sociétés complexes. J’examine dans cet article un aspect particulier de la vie économique d’un village Maya au Yucatan, à savoir le rôle vital que joue le paysan, comme consommateur, dans le processus du « marketing » qui est un mécanisme de mise en dépendance du secteur local vis-à-vis le secteur industriel urbain.

The contemporary literature on social change in Latin America reflects a perception of folk and modern systems as incompatible, even antagonistic entities. Consistent with this view, change in Indian communities is seen as following one of two basic forms; towards (i) assimilation into the national political, economic and social systems, or (ii) the development of isolationist subcultures. This paper explores the process by which communities, and consequently the individuals thereof, become characterized as traditional and conservative with respect to development. The varied, often opposing views of Indian reaction to change suggest a need for reviewing the analytical categories considered to be diagnostic of traditionalism.

La littérature contemporaine sur les changements sociaux en Amérique latine reflète une perception des systèmes folkloriques et modernes comme des entités incompatibles et antagonistes. En rapport avec cette image, les changements dans les communautés indiennes sont vus sous une de ces deux formes : vers 1) l’assimilation à l’intérieur des systèmes nationaux politiques, économiques et sociaux, ou vers 2) le développement de sous-cultures isolationnistes. Cet article explore le processus par lequel les communautés et par conséquent les individus deviennent caractérisés comme traditionnels et conservateurs par rapport au développement. Les points de vue variés, et souvent opposés, sur les réactions des Indiens face au changement suggèrent un besoin de renouvellement des catégories analytiques comme diagnostic du traditionnalisme.

The locus of the study is an established lower-class mestizo neighbourhood (formerly a squatter settlement) on the margin of a city in the coffee-producing departamento of Caldas, Columbia. The residents exhibit considerable diversity in productive occupations, including both rural and urban, skilled and unskilled labour. The political behaviour of barrio residents appears as several isolated networks between which there is very little interaction. While general distrust in the benefits of political participation is a commonly-expressed sentiment, on an individual basis vertical patronage hierarchies which channel jobs and favours in exchange for votes are an important social mechanism incorporating the barrio residents into national political activities. But these vertical networks significantly increase the difficulty of achieving concensus in working toward community goals. The role of the political broker is central to the ongoing formation of political attitudes in the barrio.

Cette étude a pour objet un quartier pauvre mestizo (autrefois un quartier de « squatters ») de la périphérie d’une ville colombienne dans le département de Caldas, région de production de café. Au niveau économique, les résidents du barrio exercent une variété d’occupations dans les secteurs urbain et rural comme main d’oeuvre qualifiée ou non-spécialisée. Au niveau politique, les résidents semblent former des réseaux distincts caractérisés par une interaction très limitée entre eux. Alors que, d’une façon générale, une certaine méfiance est exprimée vis-à-vis les bénéfices d’une participation politique, le patronage qui maintient un système hiérarchique entre les résidents par la distribution de faveurs comme l’octroi d’emplois en échange de votes politiques, agit comme un mécanisme social important d’incorporation des individus à la vie politique nationale. Cependant, ces réseaux verticaux accroissent de façon significative les difficultés d’établir un consensus pour la réalisation d’objectifs communautaires. Le rôle des intermédiaires politiques est déterminant dans l’orientation des attitudes politiques des résidents du barrio.

L’objet de cette étude est de contribuer à l’explication du phénomène important du purisme linguistique au Québec. Après avoir décrit un purisme qualifié de première manière, nous proposons de voir les fondements idéologiques de ce dernier dans le discours nationaliste traditionnel. Les mutations socio-économiques qu’a connues le Québec au cours de la Révolution Tranquille signalent la fin d’un certain monolithisme idéologique et le déclin du purisme première manière. Il s’est constitué cependant, dans de nouvelles conditions politiques et sociales, un important purisme dit de deuxième manière lié aussi au nouveau nationalisme québécois.

The goal of this paper is to establish the basic elements of the explanation of the remarkable importance of linguistic purism in Quebec. The author traces the historical development of purist writings on Quebec French from the middle of the 19th century to the present day. Looking at the works of major nationalist thinkers, the author suggests that the salience and the social importance of purism can be partially explained by the particular role of language within nationalist thought. While the decline of traditional French-Canadian nationalism in the 1960s was accompanied on the one hand by the concomitant demise of traditional purist thinking, and by the rise of forms of linguistic nationalism on the other, it is suggested that a new kind of purism, also linked to the nationalist movement, has come to the fore.

As part of a larger study of bilingual and monolingual children in Châteauguay, Québec, interviews were conducted with Grade 6 students from five types of home and school language backgrounds to compare their varying view of their own linguistic competence in confronting a world of two languages. Questions focussed on their self perceptions of their skills in English and French, their past experiences in both languages, and their reactions to real-life and hypothetical situations. Results were discouraging in that children of all five backgrounds report intermixing without interacting.

Dans le cadre d’une étude faite avec des enfants bilingues et monolingues à Châteauguay, Québec, des élèves de sixième année, provenant de cinq types de milieu linguistique (familial et scolaire), ont été interviewés afin de comparer leurs opinions sur leur compétence linguistique dans un environnement où on parle deux langues. Les questions portaient sur leurs propres perceptions de leurs aptitudes en anglais et en français, sur leurs expériences dans les deux langues et sur leurs réactions tant face à des situations quotidiennes qu’à des situations hypothétiques. Les résultats furent décevants : les enfants des cinq différents groupes disent avoir des contacts entre eux mais ces contacts ne conduisent pas à une véritable interaction.

The goal of linguistics as a science should be a dynamic and cross-culturally sophisticated theory of human communication which reflects what people actually do. The integrating notion of such a theory is that of context — the way in which the particular is made meaningful by interactors. Meaning in context leads the linguist of whatever discipline to a new level of explanation for linguistic form itself — as a means to realize communicative intention.

Le but d’une science du language se devrait d’être une théorie dynamique et interculturelle de la communication humaine, reflétant ce que les gens font vraiment. Le concept intégrant d’une telle théorie est celui du contexte — la façon dont le particulier acquiert une signification par les interacteurs. La signification en contexte conduit le linguiste de tout type à un nouveau niveau explicatif de la forme linguistique, en tant que moyen de faire aboutir l’intention communicative.

Ethnographers of speaking have distorted the realities of communicative events in native American societies by focusing exclusively on speech. The Cree of northern Alberta, along with many other native peoples, place far greater emphasis on the use of silence and on pause between turns at talk. Listening, rather than speaking, is the highly valued communicative skill. Lack of understanding of different communicative Systems is responsible for considerable inter-ethnic conflict.

Les linguistes-ethnographes ont déformé la réalité des événements communicatifs dans les sociétés amérindiennes en s’intéressant seulement au discours. Les Cree du nord de l’Alberta, comme beaucoup d’autres Amérindiens, insistent davantage sur l’emploi du silence et des pauses qui ponctuent le discours. Écouter, plutôt que parler, est d’une haute valeur communicative. Le manque de compréhension de systèmes de communication différents est responsable d’une grande partie du conflit inter-ethnique.

Les phatiques peuvent être identifiés comme des énoncés qui, d’un point de vue linguistique, ne transmettent aucun message, ne sont pas expressifs et sont en dehors de la structure syntaxique. Ces caractéristiques linguistiques ne nous permettent cependant pas de comprendre la raison d’être de ces énoncés vides. Il nous faut analyser ceux-ci en revenant à la notion de fonction phatique de Jakobson : « Il y a des messages qui servent essentiellement à établir, prolonger ou interrompre la communication, à vérifier si le circuit fonctionne ou à attirer l’attention de l’interlocuteur ou à s’assurer qu’elle ne se relâche pas. » (Jakobson, 1963 : 217) La fonction phatique étant essentiellement discursive et interactive, nous nous proposons de faire une typologie des différents besoins de communication auxquels elle répond.

Phatics may be considered from a linguistic point of view as utterances without any referential meaning and expressivity, taking no part in the syntactic structure. These linguistic characteristics do not however provide a sufficient explanation of their occurences. According to Jakobson, the phatic function is relevent to many verbal phenomena used to maintain communication: “There are messages primarily serving to establish, to prolong, or to discontinue communication, to check whether the channel works, to attrack the attention of the interlocutor or to confirm his continue attention.” (Jakobson, 1960: 355) Through discourse analysis and verbal interaction, it is possible to organise a typology of the communication needs to which phatic function answers...

An attempt is made to interpret a clown act, a musical entree, as it was performed in various European one-ring circuses during the earlier part of this century. This interpretation relies on the fact that clowns, as circus actors, attempt to re-create the ordinary, everyday world in a ludic form by scrutinizing our expressions of what is ordinary and everyday. In effect, clowns “defamiliarize” many of our habits of perception. In this way clowns are saying something about our everyday world in a way in which their audience can reflect and thereby come to a better understanding of the world in which they live.

L’auteur tente d’interpréter un numéro de clown, une « entrée » musicale, tel qu’il a été joué sur plusieurs pistes de cirques européens au début du siècle. Cette interprétation est basée sur le fait que le rôle du clown au cirque est de recréer le monde quotidien sous une forme ludique, en soumettant notre notion de ce qui est ordinaire et courant à un examen minutieux. En réalité, le clown « défamiliarise » bon nombre de nos habitudes en ce qui concerne notre façon de percevoir les choses. Ainsi, le clown commente notre monde familier d’une façon qui permet au public d’y réfléchir et de parvenir à une meilleure compréhension du monde dans lequel il vit.

This paper is an exploration of approaches to the analysis of CBC English language radio drama. Using a selected drama for illustration, we explore literary and sociological modes of analysis and the benefits derived from their combination. The objective is to develop a theoretical and methodological base for the study of radio drama as a cultural product and the relations between the structures of these works and of idea Systems within English-Canadian society. In the course of developing the analysis leads are taken for the works of Northrop Frye and Lucien Goldmann.

Ce texte explore certaines approches d’analyse de théâtre radio-diffusé au réseau anglais de Radio-Canada. Utilisant comme modèle une pièce choisie, nous explorons des modes d’analyse littéraire et sociologique ainsi que les avantages de cette combinaison. L’objectif vise à développer une base théorique et méthodologique pour l’étude de pièces de théâtre radio-diffusées en tant que produit culturel, et la relation qui existe entre la structure de ces oeuvres et celle des réseaux idéologiques dans la société canadienne-anglaise. Les oeuvres de Northrop Frye et de Lucien Goldmann ont joué un rôle important dans l’analyse.

Spiritualism focuses on two levels of existence: life on earth and life in the spirit world. These two worlds are brought into contact through the psychic abilities of mediums. The language of mediums relies on nineteenth century imagery to convey Spiritualist values about work, spiritual advancement, and communication with the spirit world. This paper is an examination of some of the terms which convey and condense the theology and values of Spiritualism.

Le spiritisme pose en principe deux niveaux d’exitence : celui de la vie sur terre et celui du monde des esprits. Les capacités psychiques des médiums permettent à ces deux mondes de se toucher. Les médiums emploient un langage imagé, emprunté au dix-neuvième siècle, pour exprimer les valeurs spiritistes dans les domaines du travail, du progrès spirituel, et de la communication avec le monde des esprits. Je propose, dans cette présentation, d’examiner quelques-uns des termes qui expriment et qui renferment la théologie et les valeurs du spiritisme.
