Tout comme l’interdit de l’inceste, et de la même manière que tant d’autres rapports sociaux, le meurtre ou l’exécution ne seraient possibles et tolérables, en fait ne seraient concevables et reconnaissables, qu’à la bonne distance sociale, c’est-à-dire entre le trop proche et le trop éloigné. Enfin, un bref regard sur la modernité suggère qu’il ne restera bientôt que le suicide comme forme de mise à mort acceptable.

As an exercise inspired by the work of F. Héritier, this paper wants to propose some lines of thought on the social sanction of the death penalty. As with the taboo on incest and so many other rules and regulations of social relations, a killing or an execution seems to be possible and allowed, in fact seems to be conceivable, only at the proper social distance, between that which is too near and that which is too distant. Finally, a brief look at modernity suggests that suicide may soon become the only socially acceptable form of execution.

A variety of written documents make reference to Neshaki, a Nishga chief who had a successful trading career, challenged other chiefs through feasts and a pole-raising and was a prominent early convert, before her marriage to a retired Hudson’s Bay Factor. The picture of Neshaki that can be drawn out of the written sources is partial and is certainly shaped by the nature of the written records; even at a distance and through such strained focus, it is a portrait of a remarkable woman.

Malgré la distorsion qu’apporte la nature même de ces documents, on retrouve dans le portrait de Neshaki, les caractéristiques d’une femme remarquable.

À travers l’analyse de deux mythes sénéca traitant du cannibalisme, on tente d’explorer un certain nombre de tensions sociales vécues par la société iroquoise des 16e, 17e et 18e siècles. L’association symbolique des droits maternels à la voracité, des droits paternels à la précarité et la confusion des fonctions de copulation et d’alimentation chez l’oncle maternel au sein de ces mythes tentent de nous démontrer, au moyen de la métaphore cannibale, que le système matrilinéaire a pu générer plusieurs conflits au sein de l’organisation sociale iroquoise autant sur le plan de la descendance que sur celui de l’exil forcé des hommes à l’occasion de leur mariage.

This article attempts, through the analysis of two Seneca myths dealing with cannibalism, to explore a certain number of social tensions experienced by Iroquois society during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The symbolic association of matrilineal rights with voracity and of paternal rights with the precariousness and the confusion of the copulating and eating functions exhibited by the maternal uncle are examined. This examination tries to demonstrate, through the cannibal metaphor, that the matrilineal system is likely to have generated some conflicts within aspects of Iroquois social organization, especially descent and the forced exile of men through their uxorilocal marriage.

A striking feature of myth among the Telefolmin of Papua New Guinea is the way in which narrative events are situated in known and named places. Myth’s inscription on the landscape contributes to ritual’s evocative power, but, beyond this, it gives myth a bridgehead in the everyday world that invites a mythic construction of contemporary events. Using the visit of Papua New Guinea’s Governor General as an example, I argue that Telefolmin were able to effectively mobilize the power of the sacred site of Telefolip — and its mythic associations — in novel historical circumstances, a possibility enabled by myth’s presence in particular places. Sacred sites are not only places where things happened: they are also places where things continue to happen.

La place qu’occupe la mythologie dans la vie quotidienne du peuple Telefolmin de la Papouasie Nouvelle-Guinée est d’une importance spéciale. Des inscriptions relatives à certaines histoires se retrouvent dans différents lieux bien connus ; la puissance évocatrice du rituel mythique est ainsi décuplée, la mythologie s’insinuant ainsi dans la vie quotidienne d’aujourd’hui. L’auteur relate la visite du gouverneur général de la Papouasie Nouvelle-Guinée et montre comment les gens de Telefolip ont profité de cette occasion pour entretenir, comme ils le font depuis toujours, la survivance de leurs mythes.

The Gwich’in Language and Cultural Project began in 1987 as a joint venture among the Teetl’it Gwich’in Band of Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories, the Arctic Institute of North America of the University of Calgary and the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Northwest Territories. From its inception the project utilized participatory action research methodology, augmented by the group dynamic process and a feminist approach to organization and coordination. This paper provides a case study evaluation of the Gwich’in Language and Cultural Project in the context of participatory action research and focuses on the discrete steps taken in the project’s development.

The conclusions affirm the existing global participatory action research literature and extend the models originally developed by Tax (1988) and Hall (1988) to include the two new dimensions of group dynamics and a feminist perspective. The authors hope that other communities and action anthropologists will seek to replicate their methodology and that practitioners will also contribute to the evolving case study literature.

En Amérique du Sud, ces boissons — dont l’hydromel fait figure de paradigme — sont au contraire omniprésentes. L’auteur, optant pour la méthode d’analyse structurale, dégage une structure commune à un rite caractéristique du Chaco et à une séquence mythique du subarctique algonquin. Cela lui permet d’identifier la graisse d’ours comme étant la préparation nord-américaine qui sublime l’hydromel sud-américain. A partir de là, il envisage deux modèles sociologiques de l’altération volontaire des facultés psychiques de même qu’il contribue à la compréhension des symbolismes respectifs de l’ours et du miel.

Aboriginal North America is one of the very few cultural areas in the world which does not have alcoholic beverages. In South America, on the contrary, such beverages are extremely widespread and hydromel appears to be paradigmatic. The author, relying on structural analysis, uncovers a common structure from an important ritual of the Chaco Indians and a mythical sequence of Algonquin people of the Subarctic. This enables him to suggest that beargrease is the North American product which matches the South American hydromel. He subsequently considers two sociological models for the deliberate alteration of the mind and contributes to the elucidation of bear and honey symbolics.

This article addresses the theme of internal differences among South Asian television producers in Canada. Not only is “South Asian culture” internally contested in the arena of broadcasting, but this can be related to a long history of contestation (over ethnicity, religion, language and culture) that extends well beyond the context of contemporary Canada. The cultural claims of the Fijian community (demanding more air-time and their own show), and the political demands made by a society of Sikhs (demanding the termination of a producer because of her political stance), represent only two of the conflicts generated through broadcasting. Further, these tensions are played out in front of the CRTC, through cable companies, and complex corporate and regulatory environments. Drawing from recent trends in critical theory, I explore some of the political and theoretical problems associated with the representation of radical difference, and the “real” heterogeneity of Canadian lives. These issues are discussed in relation to the present ideological context of “Multiculturalism”, and in terms of emergent postmodern discourses of difference and “otherness”, of authority and domination, as critical moments within the academy.

Cet article traite des différends qui opposent entre eux les producteurs d’émissions de télévision sud-asiatiques au Canada. Le fait que la « culture sud-asiatique » est source de protestation au sein même du domaine de la télévision peut être expliqué en retraçant une longue histoire de contestation de nature ethnique, religieuse, linguistique et culturelle qui déborde de beaucoup le cadre canadien contemporain. Des questions culturelles et politiques, notamment, sont soulevées par les représentants des différentes ethnies devant la CRTC, dans un milieu corporatif où les réglementations sont de mise. L’auteur examine quelques-uns des problèmes théoriques et politiques associés à la représentation de la « différence radicale » et la soi-disante hétérogénéité de la vie au Canada. Il est question de sujets des plus actuels : le « multiculturalisme », l’« autre », l’autorité et la domination.

In the summer of 1987 the Tsimshians of the village of Kitsumkalum in northwestern British Columbia raised three totem poles, a massive undertaking that enabled them to demonstrate the strength of their community and the political potency of their leaders to mobilize support for their goals. Today, aboriginal culture is being used as a resource to devise creative strategies for asserting or negotiating a social and political status quo. The pole raising was a means for these Tsimshians to restructure their mode of political expression and important aspects of their social organization along tradition lines. This paper examines how aboriginal culture was used to contextualize and negotiate policy issues critical to the community: land claims, self-government, and economic development.

Pendant l’été 1987, les Tsimshians du village de Kitsumkalum, dans le nord-ouest de la Colombie-Britannique, ont érigé trois totems. Cette entreprise colossale a pleinement révélé la vigueur de leur communauté et l’influence qu’exercent les chefs pour mobiliser l’appui nécessaire à la réalisation de buts collectifs. A l’heure actuelle, la culture autochtone est utilisée comme un moyen permettant d’établir des stratégies visant à consolider ou à négocier un statu quo socio-politique. L’élévation des mâts totémiques a donc fourni aux Tsimshians l’occasion de restructurer leur mode d’expression politique et d’importants aspects de leur organisation sociale, conformément à leurs traditions. Cette étude explore comment la culture des autochtones a été employée pour négocier, dans le contexte approprié, des questions d’une importance vitale pour la communauté, telles que les revendications territoriales, l’autonomie gouvernementale et le développement économique.
