Abstract
The presented study explores the value of pre-service students’ participation in a one-time intercultural exchange with ethnically diverse youth in a community organization, as part of a course requirement in their teacher education program. An inductive analysis of the University students’ written reflections about the intercultural exchange led to the identification of four key themes: educational relationship building, immigration, professional development, and community organizations. Results suggest that the one-time intercultural pairing supported University students’ reflections a bout their perceptions and relations with immigrant youth, contributed to their professional development, and helped them appreciate the complementary role of community organizations to school in the lives and education of immigrant youth.
