In the first decade of the twentieth century George Scott established a motion picture firm in Toronto. He filmed the “Great Toronto Fire” of 1904, attempted to show movies on Toronto Island, and took time out to open a “theatorium” in Peterborough, Ont., in 1907. Scott worked in the budding filmmaking industry in London, England, in Europe, and in Toronto, New York, and Hollywood. He also shot film around the world: from the South Pacific, Australia, Southeast Asia, and Japan to British East Africa. He died in Los Angeles in January 1929. Scott had a motion picture career of global proportions, but he is almost entirely known only for having produced one of the first films shot in Toronto. This article traces his life before and after his time in Toronto.

David William Smith, the first Surveyor General of Upper Canada, the second largest landowner ever in Pickering Township, and, at one time, the owner of most of the land that is now Ajax, was Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe’s most consistent administrator and the principal architect and implementer of the province’s new and complex land-granting system. However, his many accomplishments have been largely overlooked. This article seeks to return Smith to his rightful place as a key shaper in early Upper Canada’s fortunes.

The Panic of 1857 had a significant impact on Toronto, since the economic depression that followed affected the city’s government, fiscal health, and public services. Thus, it can be used as a case study of how a 19^th century Panic and depression could change a city’s society, even to the point of “crisis”. Using city records and newspapers, this analysis focuses on city debt management, tax collection and cutbacks on such new services as police, fire-fighting and street lighting. In addition, it discusses how a Panic could transform democratic politics by decreasing the number of persons eligible for city council and the franchise. The mayor ceased to be an elected position. Such “reforms” would be used again following the more famous reforms of the 1890s depression. In fact, a pattern can be discerned: city democracy was increased by boom times and decreased by depressions.

La panique financière de 1857 eut un impact considérable sur Toronto, puisqu’elle fut suivie d’une crise économique qui affecta son gouvernement, sa santé budgétaire et ses services publics. Il est ainsi possible de la considérer comme étude de cas sur la manière dont une panique et une crise au XIX^ème siècle pouvaient changer la société d›une ville, jusqu›à un point extrême. En utilisant les archives et les dossiers de la ville, cet article porte sur la gestion de la dette, la collection des impôts et les réductions de nouveaux services tels que la police, les pompiers et l’éclairage public. En outre, cette analyse examine aussi comment une panique pourrait transformer la politique démocratique en diminuant le nombre de personnes éligibles au conseil municipal et le nombre de personnes pouvant voter. Le maire a cessé d›être un poste électif. Des réformes similaires seront utilisées encore une fois lors de la crise plus connue des années 1890. En fait, certaines tendances se dégagent : la démocratie urbaine augmenterait lors des périodes d’expansion et diminuerait pendant les crises.

In 1923, The Volunteer monument in Almonte, Ontario was erected and dedicated to the district’s soldiers who fell in the Great War. It was designed by renowned sculptor and professor, R. Tait McKenzie, and modelled after the late Lt. Alexander George Rosamond, heir to Almonte’s esteemed Rosamond family paper mills. The seemingly simple design of a pensive bronze soldier perched atop a stone plinth, flanked by the names of his fallen comrades, is anything but simplistic in its symbolism. This article details the background, conception and realization of The Volunteer, considering the ways in which it reflects the history of the peoples who settled the region, and the collective Great War experience of Almonte and greater Lanark County. Further, in as much as the monument was specifically raised to honour the lost men of Almonte and the Township of Ramsay, this article questions whether, and in what ways, it succeeds or falters in its purpose.

En 1923, le monument « The Volunteer » (le volontaire) fut érigé à Almonte, en Ontario, et dédié aux soldats du district tombés au combat au cours de la Grande Guerre. Il fut conçu par le sculpteur et professeur connu, R. Tait McKenzie, et inspiré par le regretté lieutenant Alexander George Rosamond, héritier des prestigieuses usines de papeteries de la famille Rosamond d’Almonte. La structure apparemment simple d›un soldat pensif en bronze perché au sommet d’un socle en pierre, flanqué des noms de ses camarades tombés au combat, est tout sauf simpliste dans sa symbolique. Dans cet article, nous allons examiner les origines, la conception et la réalisation de ce monument, tout en tenant compte de l›histoire des peuples qui se sont établis dans la région et de l›expérience collective de la Grande Guerre par les habitants d’Almonte et du comté de Lanark. De plus, dans la mesure où le monument fut spécifiquement érigé pour honorer les hommes perdus d’Almonte et du canton de Ramsey, cet article remet en question le succès du projet.
