Abstract
A macro-social analysis of the mutations in African solidarity should integrate the diversity of individual adjustment. In the matter of fosterage this integration requires going further than national means and than the examination of the social distribution of this activity : the more fosterage concentrates children in wealthy families, the more the effect is leveled. Our study completes the previous work on prevalence by examining the concentration of fosterage in Ghana and Zambia. The results reveal two important facts : 1) focusing on prevalence can hide the erosion of solidarity especially in times of crisis if the prevalence of fosterage is maintained to the detriment of quality destinations ; 2) the re-balancing permitted by fosterage is more noticeable following the number of children in the family than by its relationship to socio-economical status. This highlights the potential importance of demographic transition in the evolution of solidarity in Africa.
