Most theatre history studies concentrate on theatre as it was experienced in the larger urban centres of eastern and western Canada assuming that theatre in the rural districts either followed a similar pattern or simply did not exist. By exploring the dynamics of entertainment in the prosperous but unusually isolated Peace River country in northwestern Alberta between 1914 and 1945, this paper hopes to suggest that rural theatre, particularly in the more isolated districts, often had a distinct character of its own arising from the particular geography, social needs, economic conditions and human resources of the area.

College theatre is one historic form of theatrical activity that is rarely mentioned these days in French-speaking Acadia. Yet its profile was once elevated, and indeed its early success gave rise to a first generation of Acadian playwrights. The very nature of college theatre, with its highly specific parameters of composition and production, appears to explain the lack of historical importance which is otherwise generally ascribed to the appearance of a new genre in a nation's literary history.

Michael Meiklejohn (1906-1989) was one of Canada's most influential leaders in community theatre after World War II. As full-time theatre consultant with the Department of National Health and Welfare from 1948 to 1955, he adjudicated drama festivals, gave speeches, taught workshops, published training materials, and consulted informally with other leaders in theatre education in Canada and abroad. In this memoir, written about 1981 and found among his private papers after his death, Mr Meiklejohn records his impressions of community theatre and theatre education in the burgeoning climate of post-war Canada.

Anne Fairbrother Hill was a member of a popular 19th-century family of theatrical entertainers. Following a successful career as a dancer and ingénue in London and the provinces she came to America in the 1840s with her actor/manager husband, Charles Hill, and their three children. The Hills toured widely, but they also spent considerable time in Montreal and Toronto. Anne Hill was instrumental in introducing Canadian audiences to the rich repertoire of the Romantic ballet. A talented teacher, she opened very successful dance schools in both Toronto and Montreal, assisting amateurs in both cities to mount their own theatrical productions. In the 1860s she settled permanently in Montreal where she continued to appear on stage in character roles until shortly before her death.

This paper makes some suggestions towards the development of a pedagogy and a curriculum for the teaching of Canadian drama from a materialist perspective in which the pretence of 'proper scholarly detachment' is replaced by an acknowledgement and analysis of the nature of our engagement. This involves interrogating the historical, social, cultural and institutional forces at work in the construction both of curricula and of our own reading lists, in the writing and teaching of histories, and in the interpretation of performance texts. It also involves 'teaching differences' in the classroom, viewing both texts read and their interpreters as historically and otherwise contingent sites of struggle.

The following is a detailed description of a three-year project currently being undertaken by the Groupe de recherche en théâtre populaire at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. The project seeks to explore the phenomenon of large-scale dramatic spectacles usually referred to as Jeux scèniques, ' generally offered as highlights for or accompaniment to popular civic or religious festivals. The precise objectives of the project are described, along with the principal challenges posed and the timetable proposed for attaining them. Methods of socio-historical analysis will be brought to bear both upon the producing a gents and upon the productions themselves (dramatic texts and performances), in clear and constant reference to a particular ideological discourse and its translation into real-life experience. The relevancy of this research for better understanding of popular theatre, paratheatre and local festivals is here explored, along with the potential implications of the project for other disciplines.
