By many indications, playwriting in the Canadian Maritime provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island) has never been more accomplished, diverse, and energetic. At the same time, however, many dramatists in this region experience a distinct and, for some, defining sense of isolation and disconnection from the rest of the country, particularly in terms of production opportunities beyond the East Coast. Aware of the limitations of local production, however enthusiastic the support of regional theatre companies and groups, a significant number of Maritimes playwrights lament the absence of vehicles—such as publication with national distribution—that may lead to increased profile for Maritimes drama within this country and internationally. At this juncture, it is particularly intriguing to consider the precedent of the Dramatists' Co-op of Nova Scotia. A boisterous offspring of the Nova Scotia Writers Federation, the Co-op took upon itself the challenge to foster, promote, distribute, and generally champion Nova Scotian and, ultimately, Atlantic Canadian (including Newfoundland) drama for two decades following its inception in 1976. A fundamental difference between the dominant (although not exclusive) philosophy of Co-op members and their contemporary counterparts, however, is in the definition of the concept of ‘community.' For, unlike the distinctly national and international interests regularly expressed in the current context, the Co-op placed a significant (although, again, not exclusive) emphasis on the establishment of a local community of theatre artists and, even more fundamental, of local theatre audiences. The contrast, while neither simple nor absolute, provides a productive point of entry into the complex reality of contemporary Maritimes dramatic practice.

Mais, en meme temps, beaucoup d'auteurs dramatiques de cette région se sentent separés, sinon isolés, du reste du pays concernant la production de leurs pièces audelà de la côte est. Conscients des restrictions d'une production limitée aux provinces maritimes, malgré l'aide enthousiaste des compagnies et des groupes régionnaux théâtraux, plusieurs auteurs dramatiques se lamentent du manque de publicité et de l'absence de diffusion nationale qui pourrait faire reconnaître leurs pièces dramatiques à l'échelle nationale et internationale. À ce moment, cela nous intrigue de penser au précédent de la "Dramatists' Co-op of Nova Scotia." Progéniture tapageuse de la "Nova Scotia Writers Federation," la Coopérative a pris en charge le défi d'encourager, de promouvoir et de distribuer les pièces de Nouvelle Ecosse, aussi bien que celles de l'est du Canada (y compris Terre Neuve), pendant les vingt années qui suivirent sa conception en 1976. Mais il y a entre les membres de la Coopérative et ses contemporains une distinction philosophique dans la définition du concept ‘communauté' qui va à l'encontre du terme dans les intérêts nationaux et internationaux. Quand les œuvres entrent à l'école, c'est l'occasion pour les élèves de regarder, d'apprivoiser, de faire connaissance avec les artistes qui les ont produites, d'affirmer ses préférences et de les communiquer aux autres. C'est la réception des œuvres. Quand les œuvres deviennent le point de départ au jeu dramatique, c'est ce que nous nommons l'animation des œuvres. En d'autres mots, il s'agit d'aller à leur rencontre d'un point de vue ludique afin de leur donner une nouvelle vie, celle que chaque joueur découvre en atelier d'art dramatique. Nous avons mis sur pied une exposition de peintures ayant pour thème le paysage; nous les avons choisies dans la collection du Prêt d'œuvres d'art du Musée du Québec. L'exposition a été présentée à l'automne 1998 dans une école primaire de Rimouski. Ce texte porte sur cette expérience singulière; elle vise à analyser entre autres ce que le contact quotidien avec les œuvres figuratives ou abstraites a évoqué chez les élèves tant du point de vue du jeu dramatique que des commentaires et des questionnements qu'elles ont soulevés. À la manière d'Alice, les élèves du préscolaire à la sixième année ont donc été invités à entrer dans l'image afin de se l'approprier et de l'animer dans des activités dramatiques. Bien que cette expérience ait un caractère interdisciplinaire, elle est principalement centrée sur le jeu dramatique avec le support des œuvres d'art qui agissent comme révélateur auprès des joueurs.

When works of art are brought into the school, students are given the opportunity to closely examine these art objects and, as it were, to make them their own; the young people become acquainted with the artists who produced the works of art and can both express their opinions about these creations and communicate their ideas to others. Students thus interact with the works themselves. When art becomes the starting point for dramatic play, the experience has the effect of making art come alive. In other words, students communicate with works of art through play, giving these works a new life, one which each student discovers in the drama workshop. We put together an exhibit of landscape paintings which we chose from among the collection of works on loan from the Musée du Québec. The exhibit took place in the fall of 1998 in an elementary school in Rimouski. My paper will deal with this unique experience: I wish to analyse, among other things, what this daily contact with figurative and abstract works of art evoked within the students, both from the point of view of dramatic play and as seen in the comments that were made and the questions that were asked. Like Alice in Wonderland, students ranging from pre-school age all the way up to the sixth grade were invited to interact with a work of art, to make it their own and to give it new life through drama activities. Though this experiment is basically of an interdisciplinary nature, it mainly revolves around dramatic play, enhanced by works of art which are meant to open up new horizons for the students involved.

In June, 1790, in the midst of politically charged debates in Britain over the tiny trading port of Nootka Sound, on the west coast of what is now called Vancouver Island, a play opened in London that performed events both in the colony and at home—as the country prepared for war with Spain. In this article, I trace the historical and theatrical context of the staging of Nootka Sound; Or, Britain Prepar'd at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. Creatively using the possible attendance of George Vancouver at the opening performance, I consider the ambivalent role this production played in the hegemonic operations of Empire in the late eighteenth century. Appearing centrally within the imperial dramatic apparatus, it nonetheless contained considerable doubt and dissent, even anti-colonial assertion. In its direct engagement with both the locale and the politics of the west coast, I make a case for calling Nootka Sound; Or, Britain Prepar'd British Columbia's first play.

En juin 1790 en Bretagne, en plein milieu des débats politiques à propos du commerce du petit port de Nootka Sound, sur la côte ouest de ce qu'on appelle aujourd'hui l'Ile de Vancouver, et pendant que le pays se préparait à la guerre contre l'Espagne, se jouait à Londres la première d'une pièce qui mettait en scène les événements coloniaux et domestiques. Dans cet article je souligne les aspects historiques et théâtraux de la mise en scène de Nootka Sound; Or, Britain Prepar'd au Théâtre Royal, Covent Garden. Imaginant l'assistance de Georges Vancouver à la première, j'ai pensé à l'ambivalence du rôle qu'a joué la mise en scène sur les opérations hégémoniques de l'empire à la fin du xviiiè siècle. Se plaçant au centre de la machine dramatique impériale, cette pièce fut, dans un certain sens, un véhicule du désaccord et même du sentiment anti-colonialiste. Dans son engagement directe avec la vie locale et la politique de la côte ouest, j'ai plaidé la cause pour reconnaître Nootka Sound; Or, Britain Prepar'd comme la première pièce de la Colombie Brittanique.

This paper analyses the theatrical activities of Ernest and Belle Sterndale Bennett in and around Toronto prior to Belle's death in 1936 as well as Ernest's continuing accomplishments through 1940. It illustrates the Sterndale Bennetts' major concerns – to achieve quality theatrical performance and to help raise theatrical standards in Canada. To a certain extent, they achieved this end while working with a group of amateurs made up of employees from the T. Eaton Company – a group known as the Masquers Club of Toronto. Through his work with the Masquers and other Ontario theatre societies, Ernest Sterndale Bennett developed into one of Canada's most highly respected directors.

With productions of nine of his plays behind him (including his translation of Eduardo de Filippo's Filumena for the Stratford Festival in 1997), playwright and actor Vittorio Rossi has become one of Canada's best-known dramatists of Italian origin. He began his writing career by winning the Best New Play Award at the Quebec Drama Festival twice: for "Little Blood Brother" in 1986 and for "Backstreets" in 1987. His first full-length play, The Chain, broke attendance records at Centaur Theatre, English Quebec's main stage. His most acclaimed drama, The Last Adam, won the Canadian Authors Association Literary Award for Drama in 1996. Rossi's career as an actor, in addition to his work in his own plays, has included roles in such films as Snake Eater II: The Drug Buster (1991), Canvas: The Fine Art of Crime (1992), Le Sphinx (1995), Strip Search (1997), Suspicious Minds (1997), and the award-winning Post Mortem (1999); and televison series such as Malarek (1989), Urban Angel (1991), Bonanno: A Godfather's Story (1999) and the number-one-rated television show in Quebec for its three-year run, Omerta (1996, 1997, 1998). I met with Rossi at the Café Via Crescent on Crescent Street in Montreal, December 8, 1999. We discussed the situation of actors in Canada, the process of translation and adaptation, the background of the plays and his reaction to their critical reception, and his work in progress: the film adaptation of a crime novel for Denys Arcand, the scripting of a television series with Luc Dionne (creator of Omerta) and the film adaptation and production of Rossi's own shoe-store drama Scarpone.
