Stratégies de traduction et non-traduction dans The Widows de Suzette Mayr Translation and Non-translation Strategies in Suzette Mayr’s The Widows

Résumé

Dans le cadre d’une écriture féministe issue de l’immigration et de la nouvelle littérature canadienne, je me propose d’analyser les moyens linguistiques et les stratégies narratives utilisées par l’auteure albertaine Suzette Mayr, dans son roman The Widows (1998), pour traduire/transcrire le processus de négociation identitaire que subissent ses personnages d’origine allemande au Canada, et pour créer une nouvelle forme d’écriture qui puisse rendre compte de ce phénomène de rencontre des langues et des cultures. Dans ce texte, la traduction (au sens propre et métaphorique) joue un rôle fondamental et devient « un élément de dynamique textuelle », comme le souligne Sherry Simon dans Le Trafic des langues (1994). Ma propre traduction (en français) de The Widows me permettra en outre d’analyser les problèmes de traduction spécifiques soulevés par une perspective immigrante.

Abstract

Focusing on the perspective of a feminist immigration writing and “the new Canadian literature”, I analyze the linguistic and narrative strategies that the Alberta writer Suzette Mayr uses in her novel The Widows (1998) to translate the process of identity negotiation and cultural hybridization, which her German characters have to face in Canada. Through this, she creates a new form of writing by conflating the phenomena of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural encounters. In Mayr’s text, translation (in the proper and metaphorical sense) plays a fundamental role and becomes “an element of textual dynamics”, as Sherry Simon suggests in Le Trafic des langues (1994). In addition, my translation of The Widows into French enables me to point out the specific translation problems raised by an immigrant perspective.
