There exists in Québec a group of municipal managers and elected officials who are between 50 and 60 years of age. Given that, on the one hand, there are few university graduates amongst their peers–graduates who naturally would be readers–and, on the other hand, the skeletal library services available when they attended school, they have an understanding of the book and of reading that does not dovetail with current cultural practices.

Une fonction d'évaluation a été conçue pour chacune de trois simples fins de partie du jeu d'échecs comportant uniquement des rois et des pions. Dans le cas d'un roi et d'un pion contre un roi, la fonction détermine, à l'aide d'une série d’instructions, le résultat correct pour toutes les situations possibles. Pour les positions incluant exactement 2 pions, chaque fonction ~value un assez grand nombre de positions. Ces fonctions sont pratiquement réalisées comme sous-programmes d'un programme de jeux d'échecs écrit pour les fins de partie comportant des rois et des pions en général, crée en partie par le conseiller de thèse de l’auteur, le professeur M. ABSTRACT Whether Wittgenstein subscribes to a " community " or an " individualist " view of meaning and of rule following is a much debated question among students of the Philosophical Investigations. I will discuss this question by relating it to the issue concerning the correct interpretation of his well-known argument against the possibility of a private language. I will argue that, despite objections which have been raised by proponents of the " individualist " interpretation, a plausible reading of Wittgenstein's argument can be given within a " community " view of rule following.
